I cannot beleive sometimes the lenient sentances that are given out to perpretators.
You break the law ..you get caught..you pay for what you have done.
I know that the law is tied sometimes by red tape but come on......an eye for an eye ???.
Grrrrrrr |

I guess unless you are aware of all the details and mitigating circumstances surrounding a case and the decision process used when determining sentence it's easy to jump to conclusions..... |

This. Plus, that's many moons ago and a lot has changed since. And also, I'm sure I heard that armed robbery is still the longest serving crime isn't it? May be completely wrong though |

Well there was a case on the BBC website today, that a guy was found guilty of 5 rapes, 1 attempted rape and 1 sexual assault after meeting them on a dating site.
He was sentenced today and received a minimum of 12.5 year to serve in prison. I thought this was pretty decent for a change |

The majority of people who comment on the supposed leniency of the criminal justice system in England and Wales often do so without actually looking into how sentences are passed.
A wide range of factors are taken into consideration when sentencing, many of which are not reported in the subsequent news stories. This may be why certain sentences appear lenient.
I wish people would actually read up on cases, instead of reverting to the default "retribution mode" |

The days when judges got to hand down sentences they thought were appropriate for a crime are long gone. Although the law may allow for a judge to impose a life sentence for a crime in reality a judge has that option very rarely. Sentences are set by the sentencing guidelines council. |

If he's done 5 then it's hard to imagine why there wouldn't be a 6th...
I'd just cut his dick and index fingers off and send him back into the world on condition he had to hold down a job and pay some income tax... |

yes, in this case I'd agree. Tempting to go to a loooong sentence because he's likely to reoffend. I think the judge must have looked at the level of violence...difficult without knowing the facts.
So which case was it (post above) where the rapist got away without going to prison. |

I was once sat at a table having dinner with a roomful of judges. They were all actually very sharp and astute people. As far from being out of touch as one could imagine.
Their hands are tied by sentencing guidelines, so it isn't a case of them thinking of a number and doubling or halving it. Also each case turns on questions of fact and it is very hard to compare like for like. |

You can be out in less time than that for murder 12 years for rape is pretty high in this country |

This has nothing to do do with EU law. This is International Law, interpreted by European Court of Human Rights in the Convention of human rights and further implemented by the UK Human Rights Act. The European court and convention were introduced in 1953 some 20 years before the UK joined the EU. |

If you commit murder, you are given a mandatory life sentence.
The minimum term of imprisonment for murder is 15 years. There are 4 starting points a judge will look at; 15 years, 25 years, 30 years or a whole life order.
You are then released on licence, any crime you are convicted of you receive the maximum sentence for that crime. |

Nope. Justice is blind and logical ..in terms of deducing verdicts. Gandhi famously said "an eye for an eye makes the world blind".
Also how can the law have any type of credibility or integrity if it inflicts what it seeks to discourage and punish on a defendant?
Sounds slightly.. Sharia ..law..ish.
It well documented how balanced and effective that is.
