Do you have any female friends to help you or you could go somewhere like boots or superdrug and explain and ask if they can help to find a starter amkeup set suitable.
Note your daughter's name colouring, skin tones and eye copies and they will come up with to suit her colouring |

Maybe give her a voucher for the make up. That way you could take her with you and the person at the make up counter could help advise her on colours to suit her skin tone. |

Poundshop has some good stuff, it's cheap but nothing wrong with it.
She'll probably want foundation, eye liner (gel or pencil), lipstick, lip liner, mascara, eye shadow (try smokey colours if you're desperate), nail polish. Maybe get some false lashes if she's into those. And some stick on gems.

"Maybe give her a voucher for the make up. That way you could take her with you and the person at the make up counter could help advise her on colours to suit her skin tone. " or take her to a department store such as debenhams and get a free makeover then go to somewhere like boots to get similar products they used she will get a free makeup session then and 14 year old girls like that sort of thing |

Go with her to Boots or The Body Shop - you can book in for a free mini makeover & they will choose the colours that suit her skin to avoid the orange look. They will show her how to apply to make the most of her features too.
Good luck!!!!
Luckily my 14 yr old son just wants driving lessons from young drivers!! |

Doesn't mean they won't do it too. I am sure the OP would rather be supportive of his daughters desire to start experimenting, and at least its not with cigs or booze! |

Book her In for a free makeover.. Or one you pay for if you're feeling flush.. Plenty places do them.. John Lewis, Debenham's, body shop etc... Any beauty salon for paid one... They can then tell you which is best to buy... Make a day of it and take her for lunch and the flicks too
Make sure you get decent make up remover too... As leaving any makeup will clog pores and leave her with bad skin...And a gentle one to remove eye makeup as her skin is young and delicate.

There are degrees of make up though. Not necessarily heavily made up, but just applied lightly. Plus as others said , they start trying it out then. Also, with teenage spots etc - foundation and cover up sticks all help - it's about fitting in at that age.
Make up is nothing like drinking booze ! |

I was interested in make up at 14, what's your objection? If a girl is guided she won't end up looking like a clown |

I started wearing make up at 14 and I've turned out OK...just get her a voucher or get her booked in with a make up counter at debehams somewhere like MAC then they will show her how to apply the make up so she doesn't look 40. Thrm probably will give her very nuetrual colours and lip gloss rather than lipstick and tinted moisturiser rather than foundation. |

Boots is great but likely to promote their own range which can be expensive !
Depends on your budget of course - but most supermarkets sell cheaper/mid-range brands like Rimmell etc - and there are loads of tips on applying make-up on the Internet!
I get the impression your daughter may have lost her mum though? In which case - if you have the time and budget - and someone to watch the boys - a dad and daughter day out with a make-over etc is a lovely way to enjoy time together!
Huge hugs! Xxxxx |

This is a brilliant opportunity to talk to her about media and peer expectation and how she doesn't have to follow a path but create her own. You also have a right as her protector to draw limits. For example, no 14 year old of mine would be allowed false eyelashes and I would be steering her towards the less is more thing.
Make it bloody hilarious by allowing her to make you up and vice versa, help her understand that a made up face is not a default setting, but something to choose if she wants it. |

Superdrug and Boots do some lovely little sets until she finds what colours etc work for her. The staff are also really helpful.
I've recently gone through all this with our teenager. She now teaches me (Mrs) what to wear and use.

Benefit counter in Debenhams is amazing. Not so expensive you wanna rip your eyes out but decent stuff and they give you a makeover too so know what shades to buy etc. I won't buy anything that's not benefit. |

try a big department store like Debenhams where they have a few make up counters...your daughter will get expert tips and best of all it's free...and she wont be pressured into buying their stuff either..
good luck |

Don't bother with the makeover at a department store... They only put on what they get the most commission on and haven't seen one do it yet where they don't end up looking like a clowns face that's been smacked...
Take her shopping and have a budget to stick to but let her buy what she wants, its a major step in life so she will also learn a lot about developing the look she wants...
And most of all make a day of it and have a wonderful day together ...
xx
p.s I was a single dad too ;-)

Exactly. My daughter is 9 and has sparkly eyeshadow and lip balm. Great for dress up. I don't see the issue.
It's not like she's asking for FMBs and a leather bra! |

Yes Tanya Burr is another one that our daughter watches.
Superdrug sell both their make up & beauty products too.
