My parents never called me a little shit or a cunt but they cursed in front of me all the time (for example - "why the fuck is there so much traffic" or "I'm suck of this shit."). Can't say it bothers me much. Although oddly enough I still can't bring myself to curse in front of my family...it's hardwired in me not to do it
Having said that, I think that cursing IN FRONT of your children and cursing AT your children are two very different things and the latter is frankly disturbing. |

That's not pleasant at all. I do hear it from time to time when out and about and the children tend to react nonchalantly which suggests the norm.
I am sweary. I'm not great at self-editing. Swearing isn't in my vocabulary when speaking to kids yet if I'm on the phone or with adults I can forget myself and swear in front of kids. Nothing too bad though. Definitely not the C word. More bloody, bugger etc. Not cool though! |

I sure as hell hope this isn't the new norm!!
Our 4yo tells us off for not using sugar when we mean shit and he always reminds us not to use the f word, hell he tells off strangers who swear around him!
Parents need to remember they are role models for their kids! |

I try not to because I don't really like to hear kids swear but some swear words are worst than others and I wouldn't think shit is a very bad one and it depends on how you say it. |

I don't (.... maybe at the occasional 'fucking moron' driver when I forget they're in the car!! )
They're 11 and 15 now so they're old enough to understand the problem.
I hate hearing parents swear like that at their kids- people talk about foreigners ruining 'our' country but it's more like chavs swearing at their kids while making them breath their smoke as they pile them in to their car (without booster seats of course) parked on the zig-zags outside the school and swearing down their phone as they drive off.... etc etc...

My friend and I were having this conversation Saturday as my daughter was sleeping over her house, we could hear our children who are aged 6 and 7 playing in the garden, one of them said oh blinking heck and one of them called the other a chicken boob (that was my daughter!) We were amazed that they've never used swear words considering how much they have heard is swear, not at them just at life in general, in the car, talking amongst ourselves and they are in earshot. Obviously try not to swear but it's always been just my daughter and me same for my friend until she met her partner 2 years ago. Sometimes life is shit or something happens and makes you angry or upset and you'll swear or some one will pull out on you when you're driving or cut you up or something. I think it depends on the kid if I'm honest, some young kids will swear to get a reaction cos they know they aren't supposed to. Once when my daughter was 3 she peeled a banana and it snapped and fell on the floor and she said oh for fuck sake! I just looked at her quite proud that she used the word in the right context but I said to her then that swear words are for stupid people when they haven't got anything else to say and explained that she is too clever to use naughty words and that seems to have done the trick because she never swore again! |

Cursing and swearing is just a means of expressing ones self when the user can, think of no other words.a lack of vocabulary if you like.is am guilty of such sins, though not proud, sometimes the wrong words come out at the wrong time. |

As I no longer have kids, I have adults now I have no problem with swearing in front of them, but can't imagine ever swearing at them. Also hate it when I see impatient parents dragging kids around, almost as much as overly pc parents explaining their child is expressing their frustration when the kid is being a little shit... it's a fine line |

Is this the norm now ?" In those incidents its not the swearing thats the issue. Its the psychological abuse. This isnt a new thing either its always been the norm. what is all to familiar about the man at the doctors is he is concerned about being seen to have a child that litters but but is happy to have his daughter grow up with a sense of self which makes her feel like a useless cunt. Nice one dad happy fuckin fathers day |

Yes I've swore in front of children before. I haven't done it intentionally, it's just popped out, usually when I'm frustrated/ angry at something.
There is a big difference between that and swearing at them.

Have never sworn in front of my daughters and don't like to swear in front of ladies ?
Has been and is really hard to talk dirty to my partner and swear ?
Although at work in the environment I work in its normal ?
I suppose it's all down to my dad never swearing ? I only ever heard him tell a ride joke once ? And that was after I'd done a 2 tours with the military??
My daughters do listen to swearing in the programmes they watch but won't hear it from me !! |

Accidently blurting out in front of kids, that's 'ok' in exceptional cases but directing it at the kid at that age is unacceptable.
There are some places I visit and it appears common for parents to swear at their kids. No need for that in this day and age!

This has happened to me!!! I apologised to nursery in advance!!!
I am very sweary at work so I'm not at home but am getting better!! I have a 14 yr old who thinks it's big & clever to swear in front of his 9 yr old brother. Grounding doesn't work as he rarely goes out & sending him to his room is no good as he's always in there anyway!!!! Can't take away phone or iPad as did that 18 months ago & he's not missed them!! |

Crikey - hope you weren't seriously hurt?
I try not to swear at/in front of my kids - I try to lead by example - but I have them nearly all the time and occasionally get stressed! that's when I cock it up - and hate myself for it afterwards! |

Never swear in front of my nieces and nephews. If I do by accident I'm quick to tell myself off so they know it's wrong.
And calling your kid a little shit or cunt is just wrong! I would also have had to say something to that person. |

The day my son started full time nursery we sat round the dinner table and he said mummy whats a fucking bastard. After i picked myself up off the floor i asked him where he had heard it and some 3 year old girl at nursery had called him it however calling him a little shit when we where playing about was exceptable in our house. As he got older swearing wasnt an issue we both swore but only once did he swear at me and he never did it again |

To turn this on its head.....my daughters friend (a boy) is due to start high school in Sep. He has lead a very cossited life and the school he is going to is a very ruff school why I don't know cos it's the local Catholic school. My daughter is very concerned about him going to this school bless her because "he doesn't no how to swear and I think he's gunna be beaten up". xxx |

I try not to swear in front of my children, but occasionally the odd expletive slips out (usually when I'm driving). However I never swear at them, and I always cringe when I hear adults cursing at children in public - it makes me wonder how they treat them behind closed doors. I never even heard my parents swear until I was an adult, and I still don't swear in front of them to this day! |

A few years ago I was working in a house in Portsmouth area.
Some kids playing outfront of house.
I was repairing the front door.
Kids
"fuck off you ugly prick and go get your own football"
A bit of banter going on between them and kid's nextdoor.
"wanker, prick, fucker"
...
It went on.
Then I heard a thunderous voice bellow from inside and mum came out shouting.
Now this is pretty much word for word.
"oi, you fucking little shit, get in the fucking house, how many fucking times have I told you about swearing you little cunt?"
Kid was about 5!!!
I do believe we end up being a product of the environment that we live in.
Kid never stood a chance really! |

I'm terrible for swearing in general but I never call my daughter any expletive swear words. And if I do swear in front of her it's usually when I walked into the room and cracked my little toe on the corner of something. Which I think we all swear at anyway lol |

I did once spark out some scroat in the city centre one time.
Reason being he was walking with his mrs and children.....one I might add was lagging to far behind them for my liking.
When he turns and say ' walk faster you little cunt or I will break your fucking legs'
Needless to say he got knocked the fuck out. |

Hands up i curse far more than i should and its MY lack of control and self discipline. I get frustrated and i guess to swear is my way of dealing with frustration and anger.
Never in my life have i ever raised a hand or expressed any physical violence..
out of the 2 options id rather hear a child verbally say a bad word that punch someone.
After an 'outburst' i do apologize instantly and explain those are words that adults use..
Touch wood she's never repeated one. |

Which is probably worse for the kid to see his dad (the protector) get hit and knocked out. Probably introduced a whole new world of fear for that child now. |

But my 17yr old yesterday got -For fuck sake child! How many bloody times do I have to ask you to pick your shit up?!
But seeing as I spent most of the day yesterday hearing him yell "die you fucking bastard!" at COD I don't think that I used anything he hasn't heard before. |

Ah I wondered how long it would take for some moral response. Maybe this so called protector will think twice about threatening a child. Maybe it has stopped him doing something more sinister than ' breaking his fucking legs' your right I was wrong and the world is a better place if people just let these sort of things happen. |

I'm not going to take any morale standing because some people more than deserve it but going and punching someone in a busy high street, yeah not cool.

To some you'd be just as big of a dick head for thinking with your fists first. I'm not condoning the actions of the person swearing at their child, doesn't mean violence was the answer or that "breaking" the child's "leg" wasn't an idle empty threat that the parent wouldn't actually carry out, so all you've hit him for his swearing something by your own admission you're guilty of doing far too much of |

I really dislike it.
My mum's not a big swearer, and when I was little I remember asking her why she'd always mutter "oh sugar" under her breath - the innocent of youth!
I'm 26 now, and I think she's only heard me drop the f-bomb once... at a PlayStation game and she walked in the room when I didn't expect her to. |

Yes it's what I would do and have on many occasion to which they usually retort something along the lines of me being a "interfering bitch" still wouldn't hit them though it really says more about them than me.
Do you not think the guy in your scenario really cares if you think he's a dickhead either? likely not so you'd appear cut from similar cloths in terms of overreacting to things you don't like |

No I don't and I have confronted those that do. Generally they do it without realising and when you point out there's a small person within ear shot - they will generally apologise. It's one of my pet hates.

Agree there both not very nice traits but you know what sometimes a little nobhead like that needs putting in his place. maybe I'm a product of my environment though ey.
To some you'd be just as big of a dick head for thinking with your fists first. I'm not condoning the actions of the person swearing at their child, doesn't mean violence was the answer or that "breaking" the child's "leg" wasn't an idle empty threat that the parent wouldn't actually carry out, so all you've hit him for his swearing something by your own admission you're guilty of doing far too much of
Well to those that think I'm a dickhead then so what. I don't know them and they have noooooo impact on my life. As for idle threat ask yourself what you would do if you saw the same thing???? Then again I'm gonna assume your of the moral thinking and would come back with ' I would say you shouldn't speak to a child like that' or just glare at them and do nothing.
Yes it's what I would do and have on many occasion to which they usually retort something along the lines of me being a "interfering bitch" still wouldn't hit them though it really says more about them than me.
Do you not think the guy in your scenario really cares if you think he's a dickhead either? likely not so you'd appear cut from similar cloths in terms of overreacting to things you don't like "
Hahaha that's quiet a diagnosis there doctor.. Believe me I'm not cut from the same cloth, but as a child did have to endure several beatings by a now deceased stepfather (alcohol not me before you diagnose me as psychotic too) so I take a very dim view to a supposed father figure threatening to break his or anyone elses children's legs. Maybe next time I will just hang around and see what happens for fear of being called and interfering wanker |

"I did once spark out some scroat in the city centre one time.
Reason being he was walking with his mrs and children.....one I might add was lagging to far behind them for my liking.
When he turns and say ' walk faster you little cunt or I will break your fucking legs'
Needless to say he got knocked the fuck out.
Which is probably worse for the kid to see his dad (the protector) get hit and knocked out. Probably introduced a whole new world of fear for that child now. "
'Protectors ' don't tend to threaten to break their children's legs! As someone else said - if people are comfortable being so abusive to their children in public - it's highly likely their doing a whole lot worse in private - where a curse is often a precursor to a slap or worse!
My youngest daughter has special needs and can be very challenging! Occasionally I snap and shout back - very occasionally swearing back at her! I feel like shit afterwards - the worst person on earth - but as good friends have said - the fact that I feel so terrible and lose it so rarely means I'm not!!
It's bloody hard work being a parent - but it should be the most rewarding job in the world! Some people just don't deserve children! Xx |

No your right I came up with this illaborate story so that I could try and impress women on a swinging website. Hmmmmm maybe this is where I'm going wrong

No one really wants to see a child endangered but if you want to help instead of flying your fists do as I do and work with the NSPCC as in scenarios of genuine abuse encountering any form of violence is traumatic for the child you likely didn't help the little one at all and your own experiences should have taught you that |

Sadly it appears to be the norm amongst young people these days & I don't believe they are all the products of bad parenting. Programmes on TV before the watershed , various pop songs / music videos contain swear words too so maybe that should all be addressed.....
I swear occasionally in front of my kids now they're older & I've sworn directly at my teenager once to highlight the seriousness of his actions. In a bizarre way though by doing so he realised just how much trouble he could have potentially been in.

I do swear in front of my kids but never at them, I do hate it when parents do. I try not to but I do have a terrible potty mouth sometimes and I don't use really offensive ones in front of them

My stance is this...there is a huge difference between swearing at your children and swearing in front of them. I come from a sweary family and i have managed perfectly well and rarely swear inappropriately.I don't have an issue with swearing in front of my kids if it's within context and they are taught to know when it is inappropriate to use certain words. There is little point making a huge deal about it. They are going to come across "bad words" sooner or later....incidentally I've never heard either of my children swear so they obviously have some idea about appropriate use of language. |
