well as the status of best band is always going to be a matter of personal opinion no survey will ever give a definitive answer but for me there have been a lot of bands who were great at particular times in their career. Zep for the first 4 albums, Purple during the Gillan years and at the beginning of Coverdale's time; Sabbath in the original format though the Dio phase was good too, bringing on to Dio phase Rainbow. Maiden for a time in the 80s, more recent bands Dragonforce for first three albums. But to say that one is the best of all time is impossible. What I can say though is that Oasis aren't in the running, tuneless shite

Far too many great bands to choose only one as the "best"

Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, and Pink Floyd would all be high on my list. As would Queen, Rolling Stones and Beatles.

Although they weren't around for long Cream would be worth a mention along with The Who, Small Faces, and The Jam.

For sheer fun and originality you couldn't forget Madness, and although not really my cup of tea The Sex Pistols were certainly "cutting edge"

oops nearly forgot, Jethro Tull.

Love the way those that propose to be passionate and in tune with music then bizarrely play with linear subjective demeaning pretentious better and best lists

One likes what one likes there is no best

We can objectively suggest unique , quirky, clichéd, trite , maybe inspiring or uplifting but better and best is just a pretentious list athon

Some music is different to others , some is more complex

Better or best however is meh and any person who articulately suggests they love the audio art does nothing but demean the effort of all those they don't consider the best xxx

Me I like mountains

I have favourites but in reality they are all the result of millions of years erosion who am I to say one is better

However I don't have much respect for gangster rap but that's only a foolish opinion xxx

"Ozric tentacles."

I love the Ozrics

Since this has turned into a "name as many British acts as possible" thread, I feel the Yardbirds and Cream deserve a mention....

For me there's so many like police,Toyah, queen,Beatles, maiden but if there is only one true great British band that has to be the one that has had the most songs covered by other artists and I have no clue who that is ??

"Fleetwood Mac...

Half of them weren't English!

why waste time trying to educate,

Because if you asked most people, they would say they are British...

There are many British bands with members of other nationalities but they are still British... "

They was right first time fleet wood Mac. We're a English blues / folk band. First with Peter green in it no women

Led Zeppelin or Queen for me.

A refreshing lack of Beatles votes here.

Floyd, Led Zep or the Stones.

Too difficult to split them"

Rolling Stones!

It has to be the gigging octogenarian OAP band like them or not they have survived the test of time!

Another vote for Muse. If I could only ever listen to one British band for the rest of my days it'd be them.

Muse for me. There is no better band to see live. Matt Bellamy is a musical genius and i was lucky enough to actually play one of his own manson bomber tour guitars not long ago. I was nearly in tears with joy
