That's exactly what it is....but in use as a word well before Shakespeare. The husband must also know, and except he has been cheated on (hence the humiliation aspect) often bringing the child up as his own...hence the word which does indeed have the same linguistic stem as cuckoo.
The OP was right in one respect in that it sounds like a very old word...because it is. |
