Protests have been held around France as unions and young people joined forces to show their opposition to proposed labour reforms.
Youth organisations and unions were demonstrating on the same day as a rail strike over a wage dispute.
The proposed law would remove some of the protection workers enjoy against being laid off, in a bid to encourage businesses to hire more people
It seems the French have stomach and bottle to stand up for their rights and voice their opinion far better than any can even consider to do in the UK
.
We the Uk used to stand our ground but no longer, we now bow our heads or indeed bury them in the sand
.
France what was once considered a gutless nation with tanks that had one forward gear and 6 reverse now lead the way in protests.
are they right or wrong?
Will the UK ever grow balls again to protest? |

What's the UK deficit again? It's not all roses that Osborne, Camoron and the BBC would have you believe. |

Just had a look at Europe Dept, it appears we are ninth in position with highest dept in EU before us are
Greece
Italy
Portugal
Cyprus
Belgium
Ireland
Spain
France
then us the UK
so???? why is it we pay highest cash into EU each day second only to Germany
?

I think you'll find the French have a few hundred years of protest against the establishment tucked firmly under their belts!.

Apart from that I've got no idea where this concept of the French being surrender monkeys come from.

If it wasn't for a few thousand French troops who fought to the death the British would never have got off the beach at Dunkirk losing 300,000 men in the process and effectively ending any resistance we would have had... So thank your lucky stars they didn't surrender |

It's not sovereign debt killing the economy, it's private debt.
If you look the UK is about 5th in the world, which funnily enough is our gdp ranking as well... It's like debt and gdp are linked or summit  |

The company I work for couldnt implement massive changes in France and Germany due to the works councils in those countries.
Every other country the company done pretty mutch what they wanted, but in France it has taken a lot longer and nothing can be approved till the employees agree to it |

retiring on a full pension at age of 55 is something worth fighting for
well done the French,
I have to take a big cut in pension % wise to retire at 55 even with huge amount of AVC's paid in |

I'm all for peeps retiring on at 55 on a full pention with all of the benifits rail travel ect as long as they stay in the uk and spend thier money here! This keeping the money here and not sending it all abroad |

Where on earth do you think the money will come from to pay for that?
Fine if you have your own pension scheme but I woul suggest you find out how much per month you would need to invest to finance it
Generous pension schemes of the past are part of the reason that the police, fire service and many other government bodies are so finacially strained.

i don't see anything wrong with the people who do the producing, those pesky workers having a strong and respected viewpoint within a company..
Germany has some of the best working relationships between management and the Unions, their gdp and productivity is an example of how it can work in a modern democracy for the benefit of all..
If many within this country had the same gumption as the French do and stood up for themselves instead of just moaning then maybe we might have less within this nation who are just apathetic moaners..

you don't have to suggest that I look into and find out how much I need to pay in with AVC's to retire happily at 55 as I done this investigation many years ago
I have already mentioned in many previous threads that for every month you pay in £1200 of your net pay you get an extra £800 making it up to £2000 per month, I have done this for many years and usually £10k on top of that with April bonus;
but; I am sure you are also aware that the government has reduced the amount you can pay into a pension from £50k a year down to £40k a year
I started planning for retirement many years ago
And I still say good on the French and anyone else that fights their employers and government to ensure they can retire at the earliest age possible.

A lot of nonsense and ignorance about French systems;
1. They don't retire at 55; ( some public servants could, but no longer; the earliest is 60, and in most cases it's 65/67.
2. French burocracy is far from bloated; and it is extremely efficient , just sometimes inflexible ; you can always get an instant and knowledgeable response from any government office.
21 century? The systems in place in France, for doing administration online, taxation, etc are light years ahead of the UK. As is their Health system.
3. Oh, and it's much easier to fire a worker in France than UK ( as long as you have the right evidence )
4. Despite the publicity surrounding strikes, the relationship between industrial manages and the workforce is extremely inclusive, and puts the adversarial workforce / management practices in UK to shame .
Ii know which country is in the 21st century; and which one is still in the 20th ( actually more like 19th century) |

They are in front of us in the Dept league so they must be doing something wrong!!!!

I looked at this about a year ago back and if I remember correctly it's not quite all it seems.
.
French sovereign debt is about 8% higher than the UK and the net debt is roughly the same.
However UK household debt is about 86% of gdp down from 91% during the 08 crises but starting to rise again.
French household debt to gdp is about 60% up from the low 40s after the 08 crises and has leveled off.

Total debt to gdp ratios in the UK is about 550%
The French had about 350%.
