After promising to host the festive family get together this weekend, my nephew has just informed us that his new girlfriend is vegan. We've got a bag of frozen peas, but does anybody have any fab ideas for party snacks for her that are a bit more exciting? Either easy to make or directly purchaseable suggestions would be most helpful! |

At least vegetarians eat cheese (I think) so the cheese and pineapple hedgehog would be a winner. The sprout surprise dish I had planned doesn't look viable. |

I don't want to put a downer on your party, but I don't think the meat eaters are going to enjoy hedgehog either |

Yes they eat cheese,
she should bring her own food really like you say vegetarians are easily catered for if I was a vegan or had other dietary needs I would take my own food as I'd know it would be a bit of a chore but if it was close family/ friend than yeah I would expect them to be all over that lol but since she isn't married to your nephew yet I wouldn't bother lol. |

Dips .... lots of different dips that everyone can eat, with assorted breads, crackers, nachos, crisps (though watch for dairy on the ingredient list).
Guacamole is dead easy to make and totally vegan as is hummus, to which you can add different flavours like lemon and coriander, onion etc., tomato salsa, spicy aubergine dip, tzatziki (made with non dairy yoghurt). |

These are good ideas and everyone will enjoy them too.
Years ago i used to buy something called Sosmix ... i was a vegan and veggie for many years ... it was a dry mixture which i used to roll into small balls and bake .. i loved them and you could add various things to spice them up. |

When I looked into vegan food a while ago (out of curiosity) it all seemed rather bland (the people making the guide even referred to it as peasant food) but made more interesting with loads of different dips. |

Frozen peas squashed together in the shape of a sprout. The surprise is there are no sprouts in the recipe |

Thanks for all your great ideas so far - Birds Eye veggie fingers is the best we've come up with on our own. The guacamole sounds a good idea as do the mini pizzas. |

Sprout surprise usually manifests itself a few hours after dinner.
Take a look out of your window mid afternoon, see all those people wandering up and down the street?
They're all having sprout walk... |

It'd also be very easy to make potato, or sweet potato wedges ... toss in a spoon of olive or rapeseed oil before baking, sprinkle with black pepper, paprika, garlic and so on. Homemade falafels are easy - not sure if the supermarket ones have dairy or not, you'd need to check. Linda McCartney frozen sausages are vegan and actually quite tasty IMO, you could do hotdogs ... I think maybe her sausage rolls are too. |

If you don't want to get involved with doing too much of your own preparation/cooking from scratch, most Holland and Barretts stock VBites VegiDeli and Cheatin' ranges: everything from meat-free sausages rolls and pigs in blankets, to Cheezly & cranberry bites and mini quiches. Most are clearly labelled as vegan if they are, but a member of staff should be able to help you if you're unsure.
If you have a Lidl near you, their own-brand mince pies are vegan. You could warm some of those up for her and serve them with some Swedish Glace ice cream. (Available in most supermarkets.) If she doesn't like mince pies, there are some branded alternatives that're vegan, like Mr Kipling's apple and blackcurrant pies. (Although watch out, 'cause the just straight up apple ones aren't!)
The other supermarkets' free from ranges aren't bad either, but can be a bit more of a minefield, as they aren't ostensibly for vegans, but more for people with intolerances; so be careful! You might be better off going for something a little more straightforward - like Oreos, for example - if you're after something of the biscuity variety.
Failing that, you could always opt for something simple, like celery and/or peppers and hummus. It can be tough to find other dips that don't have milk in, but making something like your own guac is easy! A lot of flavours of crisps are vegan, and some brands (e.g. Kettle Chips) even label them so. Pringles are also a safe bet now as well, now that they aren't owned by Procter and Gamble any more!
Honestly, I'm sure she'll just be touched that you've gone to any kind of special effort to accommodate her. |

I don't eat carbs of any kind but I don't expect anyone to cater for my needs, especially at a party where everything is beige and based on carbs.
Crudités and dips for her and everyone should do it. |

Iceland, but Aldi is closer.. |
Don't panic about catering for vegans, it's not a problem and invariably a lot of normal food is vegan friendly.
Supermarkets do a fair amount of vegan food, also the Asian range (Indian) has a lot of vegan friendly foods.
If you have an Indian food centre nearby, pakoras and vegetable samosas are vegan along with vegetable spring rolls (tsing tao) brand.
Be careful with pre-made sauces as thai chilli sauces may contain fish sauce.
Good luck, and if all else fails, a lettuce leaf will suffice..

Not normal cheese, they don't.
Vegans don't eat anything with an animal origin. Cheddar is off the menu. |

The hedgehog in question has been on a vegetable-only diet. Does that count? |

Loads of veggies / breads / garlic chilli oils etc.. and dippy things - and while she's eating them throw the frozen peas at her head for being so irritating!
I say go out to dinner then she can annoy the restaurant staff with her preferences!

Breaded mushrooms, veg samosas, onion bhajis, baba ganoush, houmous, flatbreads and crudités for dipping, olive tapenade pinwheels, olives, miniature stuffed peppers, artichoke parcels. Just check the ingredients and use oils instead of butter or ghee. |

Ooh, a big pot of vegan chilli. Tortillas, rice, baked spuds as an accompaniment. Lovely! Everyone can enjoy that. And the vegetarians can sprinkle on cheese. And everyone else can then add fried chorizo or bacon pieces. |

I'd have lots of salad nibbles, celery, carrot, cucumber etc with salsas and other dips - most people will love them. The food on stores will often state if suitable for vegans and big supermarkets often have separate areas for specialised dietary requirements.
Hot soup is great in the winter and fairly easy to make. It's also filling and nutritious, with good ingredients. Loads of vegetable choices for homemade and all could enjoy it. Check garden herb qualities, to see if the frost hasn't damaged them.

Check the ingredients - many animal products are also allergens, and therefore listed in bold.
Although also look out for honey, shellac and E120 (cochineal)
There are vegan versions of all the Christmas favourites; mince pies, christmas pudding etc. usually available from the cheaper stores like Iceland.
As for biscuits, oreos, bourbons, hobnobs are vegan
Swedish Glace is a vegan icecream available from many supermarkets
Sainsburys do their own brand of vegan cheese (in the free-from section), or alternatively look out for Violife (from Waitrose or Tesco)
Vitalite and Pure are well known vegan margarines.

Butternut and sweet potato soup for starters using veg stock and onions as the flavouring.
Roasted parsnip, carrot, broccoli, cauliflower and mashed pot using soy milk plus a nut roast (check for the V sign on packaging)
Fruit salad or vegan chocolate mousse. Google vegan recipes. There is s few.
Good luck! |
