They've been silly from the start. God never wrote the bible. "True! It's been written my men (allegedly) writing it on God's behalf. Like any very long book (if you want to strip it down to what it is) there are some great bits and some not-so-great bits! It preaches mainly (but not exclusively) love and forgiveness in the New Testament (hence that tends to be the bit in hotel drawers/used at schools) - but if you read the Old Testament, God (and a LOT of his principal prophets/heroes) was an absolute bastard who killed (or ordered the killing of) countless thousands of people at will! People worshipped him through fear, not love, and the concept of God as something to be obeyed and feared above all else has been popular until a generation or two ago! It's only very recently we've adopted a 'cuddly' version of God who is benign and forgiving! The Bible, until very recently, was used to essentially control the uneducated masses and subjugate women. What better way to keep millions of peasants down than to say 'your life may be really shit now - but put up with it meekly and you'll go to this great place called heaven - but steal food to feed your starving family and you'll go to hell for all eternity!' And don't forget that at one point people were put to death for herecy if they translated the Bible from Latin to English! "The bible has been updated many times, we are currently using the 400 year old one which contains many revisions over the previous one which was constantly updated due to glitches and bug fixes between around 1100 and 1800 years ago based on stories that happened about 200 years before they wrote that one. I suspect we are on version 56.7.3.0 at the moment.
