I'm very much a Rioja kind of guy but today from recommendation I bought a bottle of Villa Maria Sauvignon Blanc. It's the first time I've ever spent £14 on a bottle of white wine. I hope it lives up to the review.

TO THE WINE LOVERS...

Do you have a recommendation?

Are you red or white?

How much do you generally spend on a good bottle?

I'm a member of the wine society and they have some lovely bottles. Don't drink red though. I've bought a couple of bottles in the past for around 50-70 quid, but I generally spend about £15 per bottle

I wouldn't spend less that £10 on a bottle of red.

£8 on a bottle of white.

I like red wine most and anything with strawberries mentioned when it's described to me.

I'm a fan of port. I will spend lots of money on port

You will find the fixed costs are the same for every bottle (packaging, transport, tax etc) so theoretically the more expensive the wine the more has been spent on producing it and there for a better quality. That said there is an Argentine Malbec in Aldi that is the muts nutts

I like a nice white wine. Have no real favourites. Have tried red but it just gives me a headache and tastes vinegary. But do like sherry and port. X

Malbec in asda was given the best red wine in it's category in wine awards.

It's not expensive and I can verify it's delicious

Don't know about flowers, but you can get prosecco balls,and you can pick them up in loads of places, even home bargains

I'm by no means a connoisseur of wine - I tend to opt for white and usually Pinot Grigio - but I DO like a white Rioja when I'm holidaying in Spain (the white can be difficult to get here! Xx

If you like rioja, you'll like chateau neuf. Pricier but nice. Less obvious choice is Full Fifteen from Laithwaites. Smooth Australian red, at 15% alcohol - easy drinking... just hard standing after!

Whites - Sancerre, Pouilly-Fume, Puilly-Fuise

I'm not usually a fan of white but the Villa Maria Viognier is rather nice as well.

I generally spend £8-15 below that you're paying more for the bottle than the actual wine, above is generally diminishing returns.

My recommendations would be Black Stump Durif Shiraz - a big fruity beast of a red.

Franciacorta - an Italian fizz that is far better than Prosecco.

I'm a red wine man,usually a merlot,sauv blanc kind of guy,but I like Rioja too.

I usually stick to the £7-£10 range and best of they are on special.

I like Wolf Blass yellow label,and the Isla Mehta stuff is quite good too...

If you like Chateau Neuf du pape then try either gigondas or vacqueyras. They're neighbouring regions with stricter controls making for a more consistent wine

For supermarkets Aldi is just wonderful.

Try a red Portuguese called Animus,astonishing value only £4.99 but could be easily far more.Very well reviewed,full red wine lots of subtle fruit flavour.

For white try the Limoux Chardonnay. Someone else mentioned the Argentinian Malbec and I agree v good.

Also try Highland Black whisky,same price as Bells etc but far better.

The Full Fifteen is a great shout

They also do a Full Fifteen sparkling red, which is something you don't see often but it's bloody lovely. It's a bit like grown-up fizzy Ribena, but what's not to like about that!

i'm getting down with the penultimate case of 2013 chateau ausone from my stash ... it's not bad either ... goes really well with the manchego viejo my mate brought from his farm in albacete a couple of weeks ago

You can improve the taste of your red wine by allowing it warm up and get some air through it. The nose and taste can change significantly.

Our favourite is Chateau Tanunga (Barossa Valley) Shiraz, so blooming lovely - we drank some at the cellar door a few years ago.

Chilled Kiwi Sav Blanc is pretty much brilliant from Nelson or Marlborough.

We both love fix too, Prosecco, Cava or Champers, after the first couple it all tastes the same, just dont let it get too old as it gets darker and tastes nutty

15 is what I'd spend on a good red. A Malbec or a Rioja

M&S special decanter port is amazing £16 a bottle and worth it

I've got a diploma in wine,( not showing off, I just have) Useful for knowing about old world wine, jackshit for most new world which tend to go by brand names which are uninformative to say the least

I got a couple of bottles of Montrachet Grand Cru 1999. I got them through work, I had them for about 3 years. The price sky rocketed this year to around €1400 a bottle. So over the Christmas and New Years I drank them with family.

At the moment I am really loving an Italian wine Ribolla Gialla

I like a nice chianti. Cotes du rhone. I like a claret but must be a merlot. I will spend £5 upwards on a nice bottle. For a white do like a nice Australian chardonnay.

I'm into Cava at the moment - the dry crisp type - usually under £10 in any supermarket.

Prossecco is too sweet - Cava is under rated!

Well I'm impressed.

I'm involved with a wine club and every bottle you receive comes with tasting notes. Information on the vineyard, the grape itself, the owner etc. It makes you appreciate the wine that little bit more aswell as educate

Well I'm impressed.

Back in my wine selling days, it would amuse me that a proportion of my customers would want to discuss terroir, grape variety, bottle age and vintage.but if it was Australian all they'd want to know was how strong it was! It was usually sickly sweet shiraz or over oaked chardonnay with little or no acidity

Luckily Aussie wine,and the people who drink it, have become far more discerning nowadays and there is some seriously good stuff coming through, same with Chile and Argentina.

New Zealand has always been class, I remember when the rush for Cloudy Bay was akin to the Beaujolais Nouveau mania. Now they sell it year round in Tescos!
