necessary on a bike
Just been for a walk along a canal which is both a designated footpath and cycleway.
So therefore both modes of transport have a perfect right to be there.
My walk was however spoiled owing to having to keep looking over my shoulders for cyclists.
What amazed me was that of the cyclists that passed me only one indicated his imminent approach with a bell.
Are bells not part of a bike now, surely they are better than having to avoid pedestrians |

I think it would be more fun for the cyclist if they played ice cream chimes... building up your hopes before they force you into the canal. But I'm warped

It is a legal requirement to sell a bike with a bell attached. However it is not a legal requirement to keep it on there, once the sale has finished!!
It is up to the cyclist to make his presence known, either by way of voice, bell, foghorn, etc, not you the pedestrian to keep looking for them. If they don't ask politely for you to move, then don't!!! |

Thats what I got from the website, and when I bought my bike last month from Halfords, I asked them to take the bell off for me, but the guy said he can't do it, as they have to sell them with the bell on, but I could take it off myself!!! |

The cyclist.
Although there is no legal requirement for a bell, the cyclist has to make himself audible to anyone who potentially might get in his way. So if he has no bell, he can shout loudly, but politely, or whistle, or sing, use a foghorn, however, but if he fails to make you aware of his presence, then its his fault not yours. |

Walking in front of a bicylce as in days of old with red lighst for cars?
Or walking INTO the path of a moving cyclist?
A multiuser path around here, a converted and surfaced old railway line has a set of rules about sharing it's use. I suspect less than 50% of pedestrians, dog walkers, have read the rules and even less apply them.
For others who apply the rules, or common sense, it works out well for everyone.
And a cyclist only requires an audible warning mechanism, so a loud shout of "shift yer ass, Lambrini coming through" would suffice. |
