it means something that has completely run it's course and has stuck around long after the fun/novelty/humour etc has worn off.

OK I am going to be really geeky
Refers to an episode of "Happy Days" where the Fonz jumps a shark on his motorbike.
"Jumping the shark" is used as a reference to ludicrous plot lines that are introduced to try and breath some life into a tv show that has run it's course.
Pretty much covers every episode of east enders over the past 20 years. Think Dirty Den being gunned down ... then when the show flagged again coming back to life.  |

Talking of jumping the shark, doncha just love that bit in Deep Blue Sea with Samuel L Jackson?
Its soo unexpected cos the stars are all supposed to survive in Hollywood flicks!
Oh and Hollyoaks, Emmerdale, Corrie, Neighbours and Home and Away.... all wayyy past thier sell by dates! |
