storing paper work? how long for.

hi guys a bit random.

but just been having a sort out of the filing system..( otherwise known as a drawer) and wondered,

do i need to keep insurance forms that are out of date?

what about bills that have been paid.?

what do i really need to keep by law and for how long?

hope some one can help.

Hmm I'm the same! How long should we keep bank statements?

Out of date docs have been destroyed though, so I'm not as bad as you!

I am self employed and run my own business, and anything to do with tax I keep for 7 yrs, usually most other paperwork I keep for 3yrs, just in case i need to refer back...and scare myself when i see how much things have gone up in price!!

Buy a scanner and scan it all on. I keep bills for a year, insurance forms whilst I have a policy and other bits forever

I have never known the answer to this... I have all bank statements since I had first account at 16!!!

and still have all car insurance, and even my tax discs...lol

For tax purposes any documents, including bank statements 7 years, that is the max HMRC can ask for paperwork

God, I haven't got room to keep all that shite! Isn't that only if you are self employed?

God, I haven't got room to keep all that shite! Isn't that only if you are self employed?

If you are self employed need to keep full sets of accounts.

If you are employed and on PAYE, the paperwork should be only a couple of pieces of paper

what is a filling system my paperwork is everywhere.

ive just changed banks so have to sort of some of my old bank stuff i dont need like account plan. bank statements i keep for a year
