Whether black is in fact a colour depends on where you are coming from.

In scientific terms, White is a mix of all colours and black is the absence of all colours in terms of light mixing.

Yes ! Black is a lack of reflected light .Id say black fits in almost anywhere thus can be defined as versatile

I thought white was as you can overlay it with other colours without it showing through. Although painters would say magnolia.
