Tell us a few facts about where you live. Is your Town/City famous for anything?

Here's a few facts about where I live:

Stonehenge is a UNESCO world heritage site which stands testament to the ages and has a magnetism that has drawn people to them for centuries.

Salisbury cathedral has the oldest working clock in the world, from 1386, and it has the best-preserved of the four copies of the Magna Carta.

Stourhead is a country house and garden and Longleat Safari Park, an award-winning and hugely popular wildlife attraction.

What have you got? Please Share? And no, I don't work for the Tourist Board

Our little town is the birthplace of British motor racing. It was also the first seaside resort to allow mixed bathing! At the turn of the last century the group of rich influential land owners that built most of the town held infamous sex parties in their mansions! The head of witches Crowley also visited a local powerful coven in the town regularly which apparently still exists now...

You'd think it would be deviant central here but it's more recently known as God's Waiting Room!

York

Where do I start with York! Former Roman and Viking settlement, former capital of England, the minster and intact medieval city walls draw visitors from all over the world. It's regularly used as a filming location for TV shows and Hollywood films. Dame Judi Dench is from York and a street is named after her.

Hiding in the shadows

I live in a seaside village, reported to be the biggest village in England, sandwiched between the beach and the South Downs.

Its a beautiful place to live.

We have a very beautiful college, that could easily pass for Hogwarts, although it looks incredibly old was actually built in 1848

I live about half a mile from the Welsh border, my town is an ancient market town that was Welsh until 1157.

There is also a 3000 year old hill fort, the best preserved hill fort in the UK. It has been said that the hill fort was the birthplace of Guinevere Pendragon

Notable places include;

Whittington Castle, said to be the home of the Holy Grail.

Whittington village said to be the home of Dick Whittington Lord Mayor of London

And Babbinswood said to be the place Babes in the Wood was set.

Close by is Pontcysyllte Aquaduct, built by Thomas Telford and stands 130ft above the river Dee. It is the longest and highest aquaduct in the UK and has UNESCO status.

Also near is home of the industrial revolution Ironbridge, another Telford structure.

Ironbridge Gorge has World Heritage Site status.

Near Wells

I live in England's smallest city with its grand Cathedral and Bishops Palace. The Cathedral was built between 1176 and 1450.

The name Wells comes from 3 wells, 1 in the market place and the other 2 in the grounds of the Bishops Palace and Cathedral.

Mary Bignal Rand is the most famous person, a Gold Medalist in the 1964 Olympics.

Alnmouth

The county I live in is rather lovely, very quaint. In a town not far from where I live is Alnwick, it's here there's a monument that stands on a hill a short walk from the town centre. As the story goes, the duke had told put the rent up for the locals to a rate that was deemed excessive. After the duke backed down, the locals erected a monument in his honour. Upon seeing it, the duke decided if the locals can pay for a monument then they can afford the extra rent.

If there is a moral to this story beyond not trusting hereditary rule I'd like to know

For a small town we do OK. We are the birthplace of Joseph Priestley and Robert Palmer, and rumour has it Stan Laurel but I'm not sure if that is true. We had a world famous variety club and have a well known buscuit factory. Our rugby league team won the first challenge Cup and we have been used as the set in several feature films, the last doubling as Keighley in blow dry. There is plenty more but you've all stopped reading by now anyway lol.
