My son has asked me too and ive said no
I think it would be a total disaster before we even got off the driveway
Has anyone on here taught their children? |

Im a driving instructor by trade with 10 years exp. I taught my son to drive and it was awfull.....familiarity breeds contempt.....dont do it lol xxx |

I had lessons but my dad took me out regularly and it was ok - but then I'm used to how critical he is anyway! Plus, my mum let me drive myself to and from school in her car and I have to say that helped a huge amount - the more road experience you get the better driver you become. |

My dad was a driving instructor while I was learning,I let him take me out once and never let him again,I was a total wreck by the end of it and we were barely speaking  |

Thank you I will cos while the mile walk back to house cos can't find big enough space is great for figure it's a blooming nitemare on the shoes  |

I think parental assistance is useful when combined with driving lessons from an instructor.
I was at Uni when I did mine.
I took lessons during the week with an instructor and then on the weekends I would go home, dad used to let me drive myself back (with him in the passenger seat).
I found the extra experience helped.
Mind you not that it did much good as the day I got my licence he let me go out on my own and I drove it into a wall !
In my defence, to a new driver there is a big difference between a 1 litre Micra and a 2.8 litre Granada (yes, it was that long ago) |

I promised to take my daughter for a few lessons but on industrial estates or private land,just to let her get used to sitting behind the wheel etc..but once she turns 17 im paying for her lessons as i soooo dont have patience to take her out on the road...each to thier profession and im no driving instructor. |

With the cost of driving lessons today I'd have no choice but to teach my children to drive, putting the money saved towards the astronomical cost of insurance or towards the cost of a vehicle. |

Very similar to my situation - I took my daughter out at 16 to factory car parks for basic lessons in steering, clutch control, all the stuff you need to get semi-instinctive so you have less to think about once you hit the road..
So when she hit 17 and started 'proper' lessons she already had a basic grounding and had less to think/worry/panic about. It definitely helped.
All that said, she is a very level headed girl who listens to what I say and thinks about stuff. My son is nearly 17 now and I am not nearly so keen to do the same thing with him. He genuinely thinks that years of playing GTA etc. mean that he 'already knows how to drive'. This attitude does not make me want to sit next to him in a real car!  |

Be careful where you take her. Many "private" roads are classed as public in the eyes of the law and you wouldn't want her to banned/fined before she even gets a licence |

I taught my stepson to drive...one of the most rewarding things I've done. So chuffed he asked me and not his dad. |

all depends how arrogant/ignorant/aggressive/paranoid/nervous you or your child is.
i taught my ex AND my brother ex to drive, or at least gave them each lessons.
ex passed first time, brothers ex didnt bother carrying it on.
worked out well as we agreed it was proffessional once we got in the car (until afterwards  |

I think it's part of parenting to help them with anything they think you can help them with. I've taught my daughter, sister, niece's and nephews and my son has been able to drive since he was 14. Obviously if it's not for you, help them out with lessons giving them some financial help in return for a few chores.As long as they see your trying to help them. |

You're not kidding. My 20 year old passed her test in February and her dad bought her a brand new car and I picked up the insurance. With my ex and I on the policy with 70 years driving experience behind us the insurance was still £2,500!  |

Not going to learn much driving round your back garden but define private land - surely they would have to have a bit of a road network. For example an indudtrial estate has been mentioned but most of these would be classed as public highway unless you had someway to stop the public gaining access and then how would you get on it to actually teach someone to drive. The road does not have to be maintained by the council for it to be "public" |

I tought mine, BUT only after they had been with a driving instructor with dual controls and mastered the basics of driving... then I bought a very low power car and let them drive it with me panic struck in the passenger seat.  |

Pay for lessons you should be able to get them for £40 for 2 hrs if you look around. Think on you are going to be paying the best part in £20 a week in additional insurance fees for yours and your sanity with it. |
