Like Trump and Orban and BoJo, China is using lockdown and the inability to protest to slip in laws and act without the scrutiny they should have.

The end of one country, two systems.

Chris Patten raises some interesting points on this, also how they are pushing their territory grab in the south China Sea etc..

Perhaps it is time to stand up globally to them..?

It's always a balance with a superpower, just like with the USA.

How do you "stand up" to them if they are a huge market for your goods and services, especially on the cusp of a global economic crisis?

Actually, I'll answer my own question, you act together, but with Brexit and Trump we've spent the last few years disrupting alliances.

That is the only way, they look to have backed off with Australia and threats on imports..

Only by acting collectively can there be any changes to how they are proceeding and as you rightly say there are so many splits to exploit, some self inflicted..

If Britain are looking for a favourable trade deal with China they better keep their mouth shut re. Hong Kong, since leaving the EU they are now Nothing more than a small fish in a sea full of big hungry sharks like China and USA.

Nothing the UK can do about it. Frankly, it's been nothing but patience - which the Chinese have in abundance - that's stopped something like this happening sooner.

The world, three decades after the fall of the Berlin Wall, has two superpowers again.

The USA and the UK don't like it because they know that, unlike the Soviet Union, China isn't going to go bankrupt and collapse; so there won't be any "We won, our system has triumphed" moment.

I'm glad I don't live in China but imagining we're going to be able to do anything to influence its politics is wishful thinking.

It’s taken an absolute age for the world to take notice of the plight of the Uighurs I don’t expect much done over Hong Kong.

It wasn’t so long ago on here that someone was praising the restraint of the Chinese authorities over dealing with the Hong Kong protests. A real Comical Ali moment.

No response from HMG .

This should be receiving attention from MPs from all parts of the house, who are sadly otherwise engaged at the moment .

The world doesn't care. They're Muslims and therefore "terrorists".

Tibet was invaded long before bit as they tend to burn themselves rather than other people no governments have much cared.

I wonder how this action could change Honk Kings attractiveness as an investment centre though.

They are reconsidering Huawei's 5G involvement in the UK, although that's probably more to stay chummy with Trump.

This government does not want the involvement of Parliament or the civil service. That is what "getting things done" means.

Cummings is not getting in the way. They are no longer supposed to be a consideration in anything important anyway.

Surely you realised that. Who did you think that control was really being taken back for?

UK, USA, Canada and Australia have issued a joint statement:

“Signatories to this statement reiterate our deep concern regarding Beijing’s decision to impose a national security law in Hong Kong.

“Hong Kong has flourished as a bastion of freedom. The international community has a significant and long-standing stake in Hong Kong’s prosperity and stability. Direct imposition of national security legislation on Hong Kong by the Beijing authorities, rather than through Hong Kong’s own institutions as provided for under Article 23 of the Basic Law, would curtail the Hong Kong people’s liberties, and in doing so, dramatically erode Hong Kong’s autonomy and the system that made it so prosperous.

“China’s decision to impose the new national security law on Hong Kong lies in direct conflict with its international obligations under the principles of the legally-binding, UN-registered Sino-British Joint Declaration. The proposed law would undermine the One Country, Two Systems framework. It also raises the prospect of prosecution in Hong Kong for political crimes, and undermines existing commitments to protect the rights of Hong Kong people – including those set out in the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.

“We are also extremely concerned that this action will exacerbate the existing deep divisions in Hong Kong society; the law does nothing to build mutual understanding and foster reconciliation within Hong Kong. Rebuilding trust across Hong Kong society by allowing the people of Hong Kong to enjoy the rights and freedoms they were promised can be the only way back from the tensions and unrest that the territory has seen over the last year.

“The world’s focus on a global pandemic requires enhanced trust in governments and international cooperation. Beijing’s unprecedented move risks having the opposite effect. As Hong Kong’s stability and prosperity are jeopardised by the new imposition, we call on the Government of China to work with the Hong Kong SAR Government and the people of Hong Kong to find a mutually acceptable accommodation that will honour China’s international obligations under the UN-filed Sino-British Joint Declaration.”

Foreign Secretary also to make a statement in Commons later this afternoon.

He said if China pushes through the new bill, he would extend visa rights for British Nationals in Hong Kong to come to the UK."

Yep. That's putting Xi in his place. LOL

3 million new paths to UK citizenship.

I think that you are correct. It seems like a strange move, but I suppose from a totalitarian state perspective being openly defied is a bigger threat than financial loss.

They have probably also calculated as that as Trump is picking a fight anyway they may as well do everything that they want to now.

China has been a repressive states for decades and it's right to call them out, bit you aren't going to defeat them playing this game. Everyone loses economically and militarily you create a that sis not exist.

The world should also be watching Trump who is emulating China whilst criticising it.

He's just signed an executive order preventing internet companies from fact checking.

He's just said that when the looting starts the shooting starts.

The language is no different except that now we have a major democratic state following in the steps of an existing totalitarian one
