Massive borrowing on the way, what can the chancellor do? Sensible or funnies. I’ll start with how about selling Scotland to the Scottish, win win?

But it should be an increase in taxes on the rich and corporations

Borrow and spend more (particularly now) is the only sensible course of action, as this government debt is essential economically.

So you can expect this government to do the opposite.

A pay cut to all ministers is a good idea and also a cut on the expenses they can claim.

I mean being paid £300 a day attendance is ridiculous.

Well there's the £16.5bn military spending boost that was announced last week. That seems extravagant, unless it's an investment in safety for our Etonian overlords come the Covid and Brexit riots of course...

Austerity is a failed plan that disproportionately imposes poverty on too many.

We need to level up, not the opposite. After a major economic recession and steps that harmed millions, leaving the provision of essential services in ruins, there's lots of scope for investment to regain some of the broken elements in society.

Investment is the only way out. Brexit with no deal is worse than the covid-19 damage, according to the Bank of England. This needs investment for recovery. It's totally different to home personal financial management.

Increase tax on the rich and corporation ?

Aren't we going to be trying to get the big companies to stay rather than fuck off after brexit ? Maybe taxing them more will make them stay, I don't know.

Slash corporation tax, try to get a few jobs going and raise taxes that way not the usual tax those that have to give to those that won't.

He can't. The gap is an abyss. Even taxing the fuck out of the rich - who, after 10 years of austerity, are the only ones with any money left - won't be enough.

He never even mentioned the Brexit effect on the economy. Had he been sure it would be positive, he would have. Wouldn't he?

Also, even with workable vaccines heaving into view by the Spring, Sunak is expecting over 2.5m people unemployed by the Summer.

To be fair to him, he's done his socialist best to limit it to that awful figure. No Furlough; it's even worse.

I just hope that all those who do become unemployed get more sympathy and help than the miners, steelworkers, dockers and shipbuilders did, in the 1980's.

They probably will; because so many more of them will live further south and (mostly) come from non-essential service industries.

If they do, that's small progress - but it's better than none.

You forgot to list tea and its poor relation, coffee.

And bananas.

Chocolate, too - if it's your thing.

There are loads of good reasons nobody buys British - especially the British.

Lest we forget consumer driven capitalism and the right to buy what you want, from whomever you want, is the Tories' favoured form of economics.

It destroyed most of British manufacturing industry.

Are we seriously to believe the Tories got it wrong?

Or was it the Unions fault - in the absence of the kind of state aid, not uncommon in the rest of Europe (and occasionally in the USA) - for refusing to have their members work for third world pay, under third world conditions, in order to compete?

Yeah. That must be it. Right?

Britain has been the top contributor in the G7 to foreign aid as a % of gdp

UK 0.070

germany 0.060

france 0.044

usa 0.016

After the cut to 0.050 we will still be the 2nd highest contributor as a % of gdp time for others to step up to the plate.

If it weren't for the "big corporations" the ordinary wee man wouldn't have a job.

You can't increase taxation revenue by sending the "big corporations" to other countries with lower taxes.

Ireland cut corporation tax and it's thriving.

You have to speculate to accumulate

Fair enough. The person I was replying to is usually extremely enthusiastic about insulting people who voted remain.

And you spend a fair amount of time on that too.

On topic. The reduction in foreign aid is fine. But what's to stop the Tories just handing it all to their mates businesses for pandemic related contracts.

I have zero confidence that this government will do the right thing and spend the money where it's needed.

Not far away

"Well there's the £16.5bn military spending boost that was announced last week. That seems extravagant, unless it's an investment in safety for our Etonian overlords come the Covid and Brexit riots of course...

Got to patrol those so important fishing waters... "

"So far the 1st ones to take the hit are people hit by famine and the people who worked through the pandemic, keeping the country afloat.

Standard.Probably the ones to be hit will be china who are spending billions on putting a man on the moon and India who spend millions on nuclear weapons im sure they dont need our help.Have a look at the list of who contributes and how much to the world food programme the uk does more than its fair share.Maybe we can spend more on our own starving school kids your always on about. "

We are already withdrawing our aid programmes to China and India.

"The foreign aid cut was good news, maybe it will be spent more wisely, though they could have gone a bit further

Just wait the doo gooders will be kicking off anytime now to try to overturn his decision

I know

Imagine actually being arsed about kids starving to death.

It is the kids in Merseyside I worry about not those in Africa or wearevever.

Charity begins at home help thy neighbour etc is my motto.I only support British charities

What about if the British charity helps non-British people? Or even worse, someone who voted remain?

Leave or remain has got nothing to do with it, let's leave brexit out of it for once then maybe we can all have a grown up discussion without all the stupid personal insults being thrown about like normal."

I don’t want to get into a insults match as Brexit is done but the banking funds moving to Paris and Amsterdam has put a very big hole in the tax take so that’s just added to Rishi’s problems.

He’s got a very difficult task as unemployment and borrowing increases but the hole has to be filled and the only revenue is tax. His saving options are limited with the sums involved.

One poster has put lower tax to corporations which I think was the original plan by Cummins and Co.

That is a huge gamble because if it doesn’t work the hole gets bigger and think without a deal we won’t attract the types of mega corporations we need in time. They will be cautious on making any moves. The gamble to half corporation tax to Ireland’s level is a huge risk I don’t think we can afford after COVID. Just my opinion.

So not going on about Brexit but it does have massive implications on what he can do.

I don’t envy him the task.

I think he’s waiting before taking to much drastic action as the path isn’t very clear yet.

Again just my opinion but I don’t think austerity will be a goer with anyone so tax will be his best option on us all.

Pay rises in public sector paused hmm but for how long exactly?

Buy British instead of spending money in the EU is better for the UK economy.

Like what? shop at your local butchers and greengrocers for a start.

That’ll resurrect the British manufacturing industry overnight...

Tbh there isn’t that much choice when it comes to British made products, my socks were British made though support your local farmers, fishermen (a bit hard in manchester i guess) theres plenty of british made stuff if you look.

Give me some examples.? My clothes are mainly Italian or American my devices are Apple (China) or Japanese , my car is German , my wine is French or Italian, my whiskey is American or Japanese and Scottish . What can I buy to replace these items that add British made? plenty of British made cloths mate, you can also buy british phones, british wine, british made cars and a far as im aware scotish whisky is british unless they have got independence in the last 1/2 hour. Its not hard to source these things have a look you will be surprised. "

British wine isnt very nice tbh, what British phones? I know Scottish whiskey is British and it is true that we make some decent clothes, they just tend to be very expensive and I prefer Italian . British made cars are an option but they aren’t made by British owned companies .

Look after our own?tories look after the rich and powerful..its their raison d'etre. At least be honest about it.

Thats your personal choice and its up to you how you spend your money. Think you will find the last Labour government (if you can remember that far back) sold of their fair share of UK assets.

British wine isnt very nice tbh, what British phones? I know Scottish whiskey is British and it is true that we make some decent clothes, they just tend to be very expensive and I prefer Italian . British made cars are an option but they aren’t made by British owned companies . Wine is a matter of taste i agree but there are some excellent British wines the phones are british tech and companies are stk, wileyfox, storm although they are produced in china as most are but british companies. It's a start though isnt it. Unfortunately the UK has become a brand culture where everyone wants the new gadget.

Why the hell do you need a new iPhone every 12 months at a grand a time.!

People need to change their habits from what they want to what they actually need.

It won’t happen, It will if the eu insist on putting tariffs on stuff and buying british becomes cheaper. "

It still won’t happen because we don’t have a enough British products, the consumer will just have to pay more for what they want

The tories have been in power for the best chunk of 40 years but it's still labours fault.

I'm struggling to understand how you can leave everything to the market and urge people to buy British

A total contradiction.

"Even Cameron is disgusted with the foreign aid issue.

Look after our own?tories look after the rich and powerful..its their raison d'etre. At least be honest about it.

There is huge anger at the pay freeze. The 1st people they go after, are the people who worked all the way through the pandemic.

If anyone was naive to believe their empty words ,maybe they know better now.

Hopefully there will be a reaction in the new year.

"

Cameron would be angry, he came up with the figure to try and make himself look less of a twat.

Even with the cut how many countries pay out more than we do?

Which country has put the most money into Covax, the biggest issue of our time?

The pay freeze does not affect NHS workers or anyone earning less than £24,000 a year. Sounds fair to me and if you think there will be a bad reaction to that in the real world outside of the media especially among the private sector then you are deluded

"Massive borrowing on the way, what can the chancellor do? Sensible or funnies. I’ll start with how about selling Scotland to the Scottish, win win?

Cancel brexit simple you cant cancel it we are out ,you are beginning to sound like trump. "

Actually it can still be cancelled up until the end of transition period and even beyond.

It won't bit here's more chance of it happening than the op suggestions

Actually on another point, I'm waiting for your tangible benefits that aren't just aspiration but then again i may as well ask Boris how many children he has fathered or ask trump for evidence of voter fraud.

Hopefully for all our sakes there will be benefits and they won't be outweighed by disadvantages but with a few weeks to go it ain't looking likely.

"maybe he could use some of the family.money he failed to declare to parliament to help out those less fortunate ? "

He actually followed the rules and declared what he was legaly bound to do.

Why is it some expect people who have made it in this world to just give it away?

They work for it and so are entitled to it

"He can't.

If they do, that's small progress - but it's better than none."

They will fiddle the unemployment figures for sure ,in the 80 they changed the way unemployment was counted 22 times each time reducing unemployment

It’s family money and he has invested whatever he had and done well so why should he give any up just to satisfy someone else’s opinion?

I don’t begrudge anyone their wealth we all make our own way In this world some make it some don’t .

Let’s face it he doesn’t have to work he does it because he wants to not out of need so to put yourself in the firing line for Tory hater is not something I would do so I take my hat off to him and wish him nothing but well

He isnt going to give it away but he comes from a fairly wealthy family and has married into money,so he has hardly had it tough

The notion that the everyone who is rich has worked hard all their lives is a bit fanciful.

I have no idea on the background to the chancellor's family but many wealthy families build that wealth over many generations, they pass it down to the next who add more and do the same.

Got to laugh at our friend from Liverpool who cant understand a very simple/question about Corbyn and his wealth, I wonder how much Tony Blair is worth and how much he earns for a few minutes speaking.

There was a post earlier on which said he should use some of his own money

I said he wont give it away but the usual suspects have conveniently ignored that, but and jezza has rather surprisingly been pulled into the debate.

"I have no idea on the background to the chancellor's family but many wealthy families build that wealth over many generations, they pass it down to the next who add more and do the same.

Got to laugh at our friend from Liverpool who cant understand a very simple/question about Corbyn and his wealth, I wonder how much Tony Blair is worth and how much he earns for a few minutes speaking.

"

The old money in the U.K. such as the stately homes we love to visit was often taken off the locals by force and given to loyal subjects of the king, for actions such as killing others for the kings.

There a lot of blood in those families histories not all hard work.

Recent riches are worked hard for but rarely taxed fairly. Legally yes but not fairly.

I like Rishi but he hasn’t earned his family’s or his wife’s money. He’s an MP but fuck me he will be in big demand when he walks away and joins the city board rooms.

"Extend the terms of debt over a longer period so we have no need to resort to austerity.

Interest will be harsh though.

Has there really been a suggestion that he should consider using some of his personal wealth

There was a post earlier on which said he should use some of his own money

I said he wont give it away but the usual suspects have conveniently ignored that, but and jezza has rather surprisingly been pulled into the debate. "

What a suggestion. Peoples personal wealth shouldn’t come into it bit like when people suggested the same about Marcus Rashford.

I think 1 person mentioned it.

Though I do remember a certain poster consistently advocating rashford should throw in.

"12 hrs a day 7 days a week for 50 wks a year is 36 grand, not sure that is being poor.

Shit quality of life though .

That is true, but isnt the point in his argument, 36 grand a year isnt poor "

Working at that rate realistically for 48 hours a week is very low to support a family very well.

Poor is relative. They won’t starve.

Apparently we have 14 million in poverty in this country due to the way its measured on averages. . Rubbish. Abject poverty is what we should measure.

Wages should be higher and make the gap between benefits greater. The only way you can raise wages is better education and therefore better skilled jobs in the economy.

We can’t compete with the Far East on cheap manufacturing jobs.

Buying British where we can would certainly help but we don’t make that much anymore.

1.8% of global manufacturing is British.

Buying local is better for the environment, but realistically won't solve our issues.

There are only so many "skilled" jobs,we are producing far too many graduates that have degrees that are of no use to anyone the growth area for jobs is in the care sector and in tourism, building sector trades are short of labour too, Blairs idea of education education education has led to far too many going to uni instead of doing apprenticeships in well paying practical jobs. Pen pushers generate no wealth they just shuffle it around, the pandemic has shown who is valuable and required to keep the world turning and it's not the pen pushers

I agree with you

We should follow the German example of twin streams in ten same school . Academic and vocational . They both have the same value status .

We need both. Sadly we have a class system that looks down on crafts and trades.

Benefits agency and council workers to make sure people were allocated the money to survive and receive the correct payments. They also ensured the usual day to day essential services were carried out(ie bin collections)

Criminal record checks so volunteers could work through the pandemic

Admin staff in countless organisations,(police, ambulance, hospitals, prisons to make sure essential system stayed running.

A lot of these people actually went into work, whilst a lot of others were furloughed.

Still what use are they eh?

I remember Cameron talking about cuts in the emergency services and said front line services wouldn't be affected

David Mitchell suggested that ambulances would drive round aimlessly hoping to find someone who needs medical attention.

Layers and layers of management in most public services do absolutely nothing of any use, just ask the front line staff, k is nhs and I have seen first hand how much money is wasted by these incompetent. The mod employs more pen pushers than there are combat troops sailors etc, in my business we have defra, EA, RPA among others they couldnt run a piss up in a brewery .

Ok get rid of all the pen pushers in the nhs for example?

Who hires the staff?

Who ensures they are paid?

Who orders the medicene/equipment

Who endures the hospital isnt over run?

Who ensures the medication is correct?

Who ensures all staff are vetted?

Just off the top of my head.

No they haven't, have a close look at the number of managers, they wont be less.

In K's area there are less front line staff as they are working more efficiently but there are more managers now than when she moved here in 2004.

Of course some pen pushers are needed in every work place but the level I see in my area of business is completely ott.

In the NHS there are too many managers not too many admin .

In a recent visit to an outpatient ward there were at leat 4 doctors seeing patients and a nurse for each doctor to take. Ores backwards and forwards .

There was only one receptionist to greet the patients prepare the notes and answer the phones. She was definitely earning her money .

An ex of mine told me how ridiculously top heavy the NHS is with managers and directors.

She had more managers than front line staff at her unit .

They don’t need more money or less low level admin they need to cull the managers and directors .

I agree with Lionel that a lot of what we don’t see is needed though . Just because we don’t see it isn’t an excuse to get rid.

The police needs far more resource and the carers along with cleaners need far more money.

Just because something doesnt work in another country,is no excuse for it to happen here.

I've no idea about the levels of meritocracy in every other country on the planet, as quite frankly its irrelevant. As a guess some are better, some are worse.

In all capitalist societies, if you are born into wealth, you have a better chance in life.

It's how you address these inequalities which is the key.

A gmnt which refuses to acknowledge such inequalities exist,a private school system, an elitist universities culture, old school class issues and a vicious right wing media which demonizes the victim, isnt a great start.

Eh......Selling Scottish to the Scottish. What pish is this! We have been stolen from since time immemorial. If this were not the case then why would the Tories shit themselves that we should go Indepenendent? Very simple. Canary Wharf built on what was stolen in Oil times. If we were not a massive contributor to UK finances, the Tories would be keen for us to have Independence. The day will come - as soon as possible.

Please explain what you mean about whataboutery?

You asked the question of another poster “ does a truly meritocratic society exist in this country? ‘ I simply asked does such a society exist anywhere? If it does, I’d be very interested to discover more about it.

Here’s a thought Linus. Instead of ranting and railing on a swingers website about all the injustices and inequalities in this capitalistic and Tory ( other political parties are available) society, why not get off your arse and set up your own meritocratic society? You could have your own commune and I’m sure there will be sufficient acolytes from here that will help you establish it. It would be like having your own harem and you could go and live in your perfect idyll. What could go wrong?

Oh, apart from the fact that even in such a society you may not get the rewards or achievements You feel your efforts deserve.
