After last nights pathetic display by Trump fanatics a number of photos have emerged identifying the culprits . Unsurprisingly these people included a neo nazis, a Holocaust denier and even one nutter wearing a ‘Camp Auschwitz’t’ shirt , can the Republican Party recover from this disgusting display . |

Can the republicans separate themselves from Trump that should be the question. The way that trump incited the brainless mob to storm the Capitol with his inflammatory speech and call to arms to right the wrong against him, made me remember the actions of Ian paisley back in the 70s and 80s, his firey speeches calling for the mobliasion of the protestant paramilitaries to attack the catholic community resulted in hundreds of deaths, then when there purpose was served he turned his back on them, the similarities with trump's latest stunt are very worrying,

Trump's managed to unite a lot of groups of angry people of various numbers. One of the groups are of Trump supporters brainwashed by Fox and some Republican politicians into believing Trump's lie that the election was rigged. But a lot of others, the anti-Semites, the gun nuts etc would have joined any violent insurrection.
The problem a lot of white Americans have is much the same as a lot of white British people have here: a nagging feeling of entitlement, frustration at others they think are better off, a bit of sometimes secret racism, and so on. They don't seem to accept that they're comfortable and relatively well off and there's little to get angry and murderous about. |

You think military air support will be used on American targets on American soil? It takes several levels of approval to use air support on enemy targets engaged in combat against coalition (yours and mine) forces in shit holes like Syria! Believe whatever you wish to believe, but that doesn't change the fact that it's already been authorized in Washington DC if needed. Their in the process of authorizing it in other areas of the US as well, if needed, but that hasn't gotten the green light as of yet.
Just so you can learn something you obviously don't know, air support has many different aspects to it that is all part of air support.
Obviously, their not going to be shooting air to ground missiles or a mini gun at our own citizens. These are well trained military personnel making the decisions on what is needed, not that idiot trump this time.

If it goes down it will go down asymmetrical. Lots of these prior military know how to fight it. Airpower tanks and any other military hardware is negated. Hence the learnings from prior wars. Show of force is not a deterrence there are ways around that. |

I am just astounded that people in your country cannot see what they have and try to protect it. I mean Liberty, freedom, relative wealth. The idiots who support Trump, Qanon and other right wing are throwing away hard won rights. It is a small minority of people, but they are loud. It is time the silent majority said no. I would have thought the massive win for Biden on popular vote and EC was enough. The fact that Republicans called this election the safest, the fact that republicans defended the voting in Georgia, the fact that no evidence was ever produced by Trump of any malpractice. To add to this, the republicans gained seats in Congress and barely lost in the Senate.
It's beyond hypocrisy to ask for bipartisanship when the GOP has been the party of obstruction since Obama was elected. McConnell referred to himself as the grim reaper because the Senate was the place where Bills came to die. |

OK, couple of things. I wasn't saying anything 4 years ago as I wasn't on here. But the principle of course still applies. Who ever wins, and that doesn't just mean the president and his leaders team, it means at local levels and individual levels, yes absolutely the same applies. If you keep provoking people and calling them or their values insane etc thenniy just promotes division. Is it better that 74m people work toward a goal or 150m people? |

I think that's the issue with bipartisan politics isn't it.? And largely the same in the UK too. National interests usually come second to things that will either win votes or at the least not lose votes. Doing what's easy instead of what's right. |

I'm watching the (second) Trump impeachment on CNN and have just heard two Republican house members defending Trump by saying the Democrats are even more violent than Trump supporters. Even the House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy decided to mention in his speech a nonsense talking point about Antifa infiltrating and encouraging the rioters. (He said there was nothing to it, but he put a conspiracy theory in the Congressional Record.) These antics are disgusting and astonishing: if the Republicans don't stand up to a president who has planned and encouraged a coup that led to four people killed, their party will continue to die. |

You seem much more informed on this than I am. Weren't some of trumps players jailed for either lying to Congress or the courts or both to protect trump and then subsequently given presidential pardons?
That aside. Round and around it goes. At some point people have to draw a line under things and move on and accept that there has been activities, sometimes criminal in the past. But surely the best is to focus on the future and fi ding a way to heal the rifts and work together? Otherwise you just end up loving in the past permanently. |

The key differences are that:
the clowns in D.C. were protesting to overturn a democratically elected government because they've been brainwashed by Fox News pundits and republicans opportunistically telling them lies and social media indoctrinating them into a demented cult while BLM was protesting against the constant, well-documented murder of minorities by police. There's no equivalence in purpose.
BLM protests resulted in some federal property damage like tagging and a few broken windows. The insurrection was an armed takeover of the seat of the U.S. government that left five people dead, resulted in a breach of national security information and put lawmakers, including a substantial portion of the line of succession, in direct and serious danger. There's no equivalence in methodology.
There is NO equivalence between the deadly insurrection last week and BLM protests. None. That's a straight up lie spread by the terrorists and their sympathizers to try and downplay and excuse away a straight-up attack on the U.S. Capitol building in an attempted coup. Any democratic affiliation is coincidental with BLM. With the coup, trump affiliation is causal.
Some people used the cover of BLM protests to loot. Likewise, it seems like the insurrection at the Capitol was a large group of far-right protestors with some particularly dangerous militants using them as cover to get inside.
The key differences are that:
the clowns in D.C. were protesting to overturn a democratically elected government because they've been brainwashed by Fox News pundits and republicans opportunistically telling them lies and social media indoctrinating them into a demented cult while BLM was protesting against the constant, well-documented murder of minorities by police. There's no equivalence in purpose.
BLM protests resulted in some federal property damage like tagging and a few broken windows. The insurrection was an armed takeover of the seat of the U.S. government that left five people dead, resulted in a breach of national security information and put lawmakers, including a substantial portion of the line of succession, in direct and serious danger. There's no equivalence in methodology.
There is NO equivalence between the deadly insurrection last week and BLM protests. None. That's a straight up lie spread by the terrorists and their sympathizers to try and downplay and excuse away a straight-up attack on the U.S. Capitol building in an attempted coup. If it had just been jackasses milling around waving their white supremacist flags and shouting lies about the election before going home, it would have been a protest. A stupid protest of stupid people based on stupid lies, but a protest none-the-less."

Hence why alot of house Republicans did not vote to impeach the second time. Pissed off constituents. One side days violence is ok if you are protesting. The other side saying any for of violence is not ok. On and on.
Once more with the false equivalences. Hunter Biden has nothing to with this and to date has only been the target of smear campaigns.
That was the most bipartisan impeachment in American history. 10 republican members of congress voted to impeach the president.
The democrats did not incite, instigate or support violence.
It's beyond delusional hypocrisy to call for unity. What they are actually asking for is impunity.

Ok here's what we know. Trump with the aid of allies and members of the republican party have tried to overturn the Presidential election results. Long before the attack on congress, they were trying to hinder voting, then trying stop votes being counted. Next trying to stop results being certified at local state and federal levels. With no credible evidence at all they promoted the false allegation that Biden had stole the election. All of this culminated in inciting a seditious mob to march on the Capitol with the intent of using violence to overturn the election result.
Asking for unity after promoting division, fracture and inciting terrorism with impunity is hypocrisy. Before unity there's a least 2 preresquites, the first is truth and the second is justice.
4 Americans died in the attack on the consulate in Benghazi, without checking I think there was 5 separate republican led investigations to determine if the Obama administration was negligent (they weren't). To date, there has been 6 deaths arising from the attack on the Capitol. It would be a tragedy not to investigate what led to this attack and how can it be prevented from happening again.
Last month an election official in Georgia asked the President to stop promoting conspiracy theories because someone will get killed because of them. The president didn't stop and we know the rest. |

At least 3/4 of all Trump voters believe that the election was stolen no matter what evidence is presented to them that it was free and fair.
If you keep telling people a lie you will convince enough people and even believe it yourself. Then be unable to distinguish fact from fiction.
This is how despots, dictators and tyrants behave.
History has enough examples of this.
