Does it make sense that the government should renegotiate the terms of the deal?

Is it a good idea? Or is a bad idea?

Does it make the UK look weak?

Johnson was saying what a great deal it was a more 6 months ago.

Why would we have to regonogiate it?

Dont we still hold all the cards?

Think we have to wait until the deal is implemented in 2022 properly then decide .

Apparently we’re not ready for the border bit yet. Oh and don’t forget the financial services bit isn’t resolved at all. Is it even started ?

Still oven ready all the way . PMSL

The uk is not worried about the financial services bit that's why they didn't want it in the deal.

As for the boarder 1 in 5 eu checks are now taking part at the NI boarder, now call me cynical but could it they are trying to make it as hard as possible for NI?

The financial services which contribute 20-25% of taxes in ten U.K. theta don’t care about are you serious? The other side which aid me tax evasion of course that don’t care

The lack of a true border such as a sea gap and the potential for a back door entrance to the EU is reason enough for checks . We signed up for this so crack on.

Brexitees claimed take back control so why aren’t we implementing border checks until 2022??

The simple reason is the shops would be empty very quickly based on the fiasco in NI.

Tesco and Sainsbury’s stated in the Grocer trade magazine that they are sourcing more from the republic and the rest of EU due to the mess of Brexit. All helped by direct crossing ferries. That’s worked well for U.K. business then .

We now ship loads from NI direct through the republic to avoid the U.K. it’s not worth the trouble or added costs of dealing in the U.K.

win win win

Brexit isn't done, of course. The reason is that Remainer MPs, aided by the Speaker, grabbed the legislative timetable. Nearly all of them had promised the electorate before the referendum and again in the 2017 General Election that they would respect the referendum result.

To break the deadlock caused by their dishonesty, the government wanted to call a General Election. The Remainer MPs refused to allow one so the government could neither govern nor go to the people.

So the government could only pass what was basically Teresa May's Withdrawal Act.

The tactics of the Remainers were an undemocratic disgrace and the British public are now settling scores with them.

Teresa May gave far too much away as she too was a Remainer.

The WA was predicated upon EU good faith. They haven't shown good faith so we should end it.

Remainder bad faith continues with the Northern Ireland situation where implied threats of renewed terrorism are used to keep the UK following EU directives.

Perhaps the Remainers can explain why they broke their multiple promises to the electorate and deliberately engineered such an outcome?

We agreed to pay very large sums to the EU every year for many years on the basis that trade agreements would be made with the EU. The EU subsequently refused to make agreements on services...yet we are still paying them billions of pounds every year.

It has to end.

Remainer MP shenanigans brought this nonsense about by grabbing control of the Commons and tying the hands of the government. They had lied to the electorate. Can they say why?

Alex wins election on the back of this promise.

Alex tells the country we did it and have a great deal.

6 months later, unsurprisingly, this turns out not to be the case, but the fault lies not with our heroic leader, but with that crafty eu and dissident remainers

Shocked I am.

Actually, you shouldn't be shocked at the Remainers, should you?

They broke their promises to the electorate within hours of the 2017 election...and then took control of the Order agenda precisely to block Brexit.

Now they are gleeful about what they did.

The Withdrawal Agreement should be renegotiated.

Can you explain why Remainer MPs, many of whose election campaigns were funded by billionaire Remainers, lied to the voters?

“Does it make sense that the government should renegotiate the terms of the deal?” “Unnecessary, Brexit is done, apparently”

Sums it up, really...

BREXIT has fucked up our own lives completely: German wife restricted to 90 days in any six-month period to visit our kids in the UK (one excuse after the other NOT to grant her either pre- or settled status), French bureaucracy taking its own sweet time to decide on my Carte de Séjour so I’ll soon be an “illegal immigrant”, complications with car and driving licence formalities, boat registration, the days of “let’s pop over to our gaff in France for a couple of days” gone, and not likely to improve even after COVID.

BUT, the majority of Brits wanted and voted for BREXIT (by referendum/plebiscite, you know, the same “democratic” procedure that got Hitler into power), so it is what is.

As for the consequences - NI/Eire border question, financial services rules, import/export/VAT paperwork, cheap labour shortages, “pesky Europeans..trying to make us stick to a treaty we signed up to and said was a great deal” etc., anybody with half a brain could have foreseen them!

The faff makes it all less pleasant, compared to our driving to friends in Luxembourg a couple of weeks ago, then popping over to Germany to the missus' family, and on our return to France being visited by friends from Brussels (all with a mutually recognised "COVID-pass QR code", btw).

I could write a long, long list of inconveniences and obstructions to individuals (to be fair, on BOTH sides of the channel) but separate passport controls will do for starters.

Surely you could still do that if its less than 90 days in 180 ? I had no problem with the separate passport control when i last went to Spain in fact it was shorter than the usual one due to the amount of Spanish on the flight.

Interesting as my nephew who is a senior manager at a global investment bank says his staff are slowly being moved out or in many cases not transferring to London. Preferring Amsterdam or Paris. He’s moved to Milan. I must admit they are American owned.

They moved a lot of their funds under management to Amsterdam . Total loss according to EY up to March for banks transferring funds out of the U.K. was £11b in tax per year. More money has been moved since.

I think you will find a lot of people in the city saw what a royal fuck up Boris made of fishing, farming and trade deals so we’re terrified he would rush another disaster through maybe that’s why they are happy as a possible Armageddon won’t happen just yet.

Shortages of meat on shelves is one thing. Money flying out at a rapid rate is on another level. Especially the amount we now owe! That £11b would have come in handy along with the £18b in income tax lost to EU workers going home .

The UK will need a pay day loans company at this rate .

The thing is Costa you’re at retirement age so Brexit mostly won’t affect you apart from occasional travel. Your pension may be raided to help with Covid and food will cost more due to added customs, transport costs but generally you like me will be fine. It’s the generations to follow that have been shafted by Brexit . They lose on every front. In a world that’s getting closer and smaller we chose to isolate and put up barriers to their interaction with one of the biggest markets in the world. Brexit is a self inflicted disaster for the next few generations.

The EU's share of world trade fell from 30% to 16% between 1980 and 2017. It's decline has since accelerated.

We have to get as far away as possible. We have the freedom to set our own laws now so that, over the years, we can become more competitive and save jobs.

That is why we have to renegotiate...the EU is weaponising the threat of terrorism in Northern Ireland to keep us in regulatory alignment. Such alignment would mean continuing to obey Brussels directives...and joining them on the road to mass unemployment and economic irrelevance.

The dwindling band of Remainers need to explain themselves. This is real people's jobs and families: it isn't a game

That is why we have to renegotiate...the EU is weaponising the threat of terrorism in Northern Ireland to keep us in regulatory alignment. Such alignment would mean continuing to obey Brussels directives...and joining them on the road to mass unemployment and economic irrelevance.

Ha ha, I'm not moaning. Just pointing out that Remainers are lying.

The data says it has no impact but if you have evidence to prove otherwise I'd be keen to read it.

Many have. Look at lorry drivers, cleaners, leisure industry staff who have suffered endless downward pressure on wages due to the EU.

At last, they now have some power in the labour market.

I think that's a good thing, although I accept that employers and Remainers hate it

"It's an oven ready deal that is ready to go, why do we need to renegotiate?

I definitely remember Boris Johnson telling me what an amazing deal it was that he negotiated, he wouldn't lie about that would he?

Boris Johnson?

Lie?

A scurrilous accusation!

Wait... could Johnson actually be a liar? Could he have told other lies about Brexit too?

I'm still waiting for you to answer...Do you think:

a) EU free movement adds downward pressure on wages or;

b) upward pressure on wages?

Keep waiting, my friend. That was a different thread, so you won't get an answer to that question here. You also basically called me a liar a few times when you didn't like what I said. And you ignored things I said too. Strangely, I'm not motivated to answer your questions at this moment in time.

But it's a simple question that goes to the heart of the travails faced by many working class people in recent decades.

I note you support the very mechanism that has pushed many people into poverty. That's not a lie is it?

Why can't you answer?

Increase the minimum wage, problem solved

That's already happened. But it hasn't solved the problem has it?

No. There's a better way: give people a fair chance in the labour market without having 6m people adding downward wage pressure.

Why do you back the employers?

They need to be increased again, so everyone benefits,

That's no answer. Only a growing economy makes anything other than a short-term difference.

If you had your way, any short term gain would be more than wiped out by cheap labour imports

Why are you working in Spain? Anyway, Brexit is done?

Why shouldn't I be in Spain? I have a cousin in the USA and one in Norway?

Do you understand the issues? What do you think the issues are?

It sounds like you are moaning about EU workers driving down wages whist you are working in an EU country? "

Yes, very much so. The plight of the Spanish working class is appalling...yet their political class keeps lying to them.

You'll support that, I'm sure

"Adrian, this thread is about renegotiating Brexit. The clue was at the top of the page.

See my post above about why we must renegotiate

Sorry you admit johnson was lying when he said it was a great deal?

Well that's a start

It wasn't a good deal but the Remainers, contrary to the promises made in the referendum and the 2017 election had hijacked Parliament.

Perhaps you might explain that?

But Johnson said it was a wonderful deal. Now I don't know who to believe.

He had no option. It was the only deal available given what Remainer Theresa May had 'negotiated'.

It now has to be renegotiated"

I certainly also blame the remainers - who said Brexit would be shit - for Brexit being shit.

Lorry drivers were replaced by Poles, vwith bosses telling them that they could keep their jobs if they took pay cuts.

The Poles then wanted more money so the employers started recruiting drivers in Romania for even lower pay

There is no shortage of UK drivers: 75,000 registered/qualified drivers have been forced out of the industry.

Most Romanian drivers have now returned home and employers are trying to lure UK drivers back. Agency rates are up by 50%.

These are the people the EU was designed to help: rubbish employers. These are the people you support

Adrian you didn’t answer my questions last night so pot calling kettle me thinks.

If as you say business is at fault why now that Boris has an 80 seat majority doesn’t he increase the minimum wage to £20 per hour as that’s sorts everything for everyone . Business has all this hidden money so they will be fine smashing granny’s piggy bank to let it out!

The hidden money if you look hard enough is held mostly by Boris backers.

Btw your global share of GDP comment is nonsense . This country’s GDP has grown year on year virtually for the last 40 years with both global financial services and trade with Europe contributing greatly to that.

You do know the rest of the world has increased it’s population by 2.5 Billion in that time. That’s some addition to GDP . China has now become the manufacturer of all the crap we buy in the world. Economic miracle at the expense of virtual sl4ve labour .

We could do that !! Sorted ! $2 a day anyone .

No wonder the Spanish have unemployment if immigrants like you take their jobs!

Interestingly Poland is attracting manufacturing along with Bulgaria and Romania. Business moving from China to Europe . Strange for such huge investment to be made in such a sinking ship! People just burn money.. eh

And yet many, many, many sources say there's a shortage of lorry drivers here. And the road haulage association even wrote to the pm about the critical shortage.

I mean raaarrrrgh! I am fire and fury rarrrgghh!

There is no shortage. The employers just have to pay properly.

UK drivers are on an undeclared strike. Employers just want to be in the EU again"

There is no shortage? Very strange that many people who are not called Adrian say there is a shortage.

Isnt that capitalism?

It's corporatism. You support it

Getting the job done for as little as possible

It's the cornerstone of capitalism."

I don't think you understand economics: in a capitalist society a shortage of anything is met with raised prices (wages!) until things move back into balance.

The EU puts it's thumb on the scale to fix the game

You do take a lot a crap ! No one was forced out by bad employers . ( bar a few cowboys for the pedantic twats ) We needed more drivers than we’re available so they recruited further afield as the economy was doing well. One driver can only drive one truck. Wages don’t drop they go up as you need the driver to steer the big lorry thing!! Apparently we’re not like the victorians and are not allowed to use teenagers with a bicycle test!

A third of people who pass as HGV test have no intention of going into trucking . Those are the people you are counting . Genius .

"Think we have to wait until the deal is implemented in 2022 properly then decide .

Apparently we’re not ready for the border bit yet. Oh and don’t forget the financial services bit isn’t resolved at all. Is it even started ?

Still oven ready all the way . PMSL The uk is not worried about the financial services bit that's why they didn't want it in the deal.

We now ship loads from NI direct through the republic to avoid the U.K. it’s not worth the trouble or added costs of dealing in the U.K.

win win win

yes thats why the dont want the eu hampering them with rules that will be detrimental to the uk financial industry we have seen how they have been unproportionable in their approach to NI , just think what devastation they could reap on the city because we had the audacity to leave their club if we let them make the rules.

So not having a deal is good because we feel upset that we don’t hold all the cards! Brilliant.

I’m sure the banks will be reassured by that.

Where did i say the city feels upset? Talk to people who work in the city they are very happy that financial services were not in the deal.

"

We are not choosing to isolate far from it we are opening up to the world and leaving an ever shrinking eu export market which we had to pay billions to be in.

If the jobs are there they will be filled by controlled immigration and so this big tax loss you keep talking about will be paid just by different workers. How anyone has worked this out in a pandemic is beyond me as far as i can see we could have even saved on furlough payments with everything shut down and people on furlough.

Its generations to come that will benefit from the decision more than people now, the Asian market is growing and expected to grow much more and the UK market in exports has been shrinking for a couple of decades now while we import more and more from them no wonder they wanted us to stay.

"It sounds like brexiters are going through a tough time right now.

It's at times like this when everyone should be there for them to offer support and encouragement

Will you explain why you support mass EU immigration? Who do you think it has benefited...the workers or the employers?

Both, and the consumer . Do you have any evidence that proves wages have gone up? My cleaner still gets paid the same as last year

Employers just want to be in the EU again

There is no shortage? Very strange that many people who are not called Adrian say there is a shortage.

Rargh!

It is scandalous that people can freely work in another country (for example Spain) therefore driving wages down for the poor Spanish

It's scandalous that the Spanish have no control over their labour markets, interest rates, unemployment levels. They have no say over EU immigration... although they can now limit it from Britain... that's fair enough. They should get more control but their political class is very dishonest

I think they will be relieved that they can limit it from Britain,

Possibly. It's absolutely fair. Are you aware of the Romanians in Spain?

No, but I am aware of the British in Spain "

Relevance?

"Think we have to wait until the deal is implemented in 2022 properly then decide .

Apparently we’re not ready for the border bit yet. Oh and don’t forget the financial services bit isn’t resolved at all. Is it even started ?

Still oven ready all the way . PMSL The uk is not worried about the financial services bit that's why they didn't want it in the deal.

We now ship loads from NI direct through the republic to avoid the U.K. it’s not worth the trouble or added costs of dealing in the U.K.

win win win

yes thats why the dont want the eu hampering them with rules that will be detrimental to the uk financial industry we have seen how they have been unproportionable in their approach to NI , just think what devastation they could reap on the city because we had the audacity to leave their club if we let them make the rules.

So not having a deal is good because we feel upset that we don’t hold all the cards! Brilliant.

I’m sure the banks will be reassured by that.

Where did i say the city feels upset? Talk to people who work in the city they are very happy that financial services were not in the deal.

Interesting as my nephew who is a senior manager at a global investment bank says his staff are slowly being moved out or in many cases not transferring to London. Preferring Amsterdam or Paris. He’s moved to Milan. I must admit they are American owned.

That old classic double whammy of spin...

We're not closing ourself off to the biggest trading bloc on the world that happens to be on our doorstep, we're opening ourself up to the rest of the world.

(Never mind the fact we ditched shitloads of trading agreements around the world and had to run around, begging to redo them from a much weaker negotiating point.)

And we'll see the Brexit benefits in time. But it's just too soon at the moment.

(Hopefully we'll see the benefits by the dawn of the new millenium. Maybe. If we wave our flags hard enough. Or possibly not.)

"

I didn’t understand the bit about furlough sorry.

I take and respect your view but we don’t manufacture as cheaply as the Far East were-as we can compete with Europe due to relatively similar costs .

On what planet do you think we can take on the power houses emerging in that Far East in a straight production deal . We will just import more and they will take our money even quicker than Europe ever did .

You have to see the cost of labour out there to understand we are in no position to compete on a level basis.

Our only hope is high tech and judging by our falling in the education league table thats not happening anytime soon.

Deals such as that with Japan will just not help us at all. It will make us worse off . We buy more than them . They get rich we are fucked . The benefit is 80-20 . You don’t need to be a maths genius to see which way the money is going.

Those tax losses I go on about need to be added to the hundreds of billions Brexit is costing. A wishful think of a possible future trade deal with much more powerful partners is going to sadly in my opinion be us being the weak one at the negotiating table .

I hate to admit this but I think China are laughing their bollocks off at us . Have you seen how much of our infrastructure they are buying up with our governments agreement. They also control much of the worlds shipping as they continue to wrestle control away from the French and Danes .

We are walking blindly into a very worrying future alone. .

We wont see the benefits of brexit for generations to come.

Fairly sure that wasmt on the side of that bus.

The idea that boris johnson(a man who cannot put up a brolly)nigel farage and paul nuttall can confidently predict world economic trends,a century in advance, is quite possibly the funniest thing I've ever heard.

What's that old saying?

It's funny because it's shit.

Nope, it’s a shit deal but it’s the best we will get, no point in trying to renegotiate, the EU aren’t interested

And that's why we should all cross the road without looking either way. You never know what wonderful surprise might be coming.

I’m seeing first hand and paying. Coal face as it were.

You will soon be paying so then maybe you will be crying.

Btw as I said earlier I’m alright Jack

The government won’t be able to keep subsidising companies to stay.

When unemployment increases in areas that lose jobs to free ports (subsidies again) then there will be a lot of pissed off workers.

It’s a pathetic attempt to keep logistics for Europe in the U.K. Now it costs more to export to the EU more containers will ship direct to distribution centres on the continent. It makes financial sense.

Only sales for the U.K. will come here.

tax breaks are great but they have to be paid for somewhere.

So unless we are going to stop subsidising the rich elite then I’ll give you three guesses who will be paying,

So are you all saying its done there is no turning back?

Leavers - saying it done no more need to renegotiate.

Remainers - saying its happened and we need to stick to the agreements we made, good or bad.

So it seem everyone agrees no negotiation end of story.

Guess that answers that question then, bad idea for various reasons.

Brexiteers 2016: there are no downsides to Brexit, only sunlit uplands!

Brexiteers 2021: well at least we’re not having to eat rats yet, could be worse!
