Brexit was a factor eh?

Replying in a rambling fashion to a question about fuel shortages here being worse than other countries, Shapps said "Brexit, I hear mentioned a lot. And it no doubt will have been a factor..." before he hurried on.

Is this an example of a Tory MP accidentally telling the truth?

Are the Tories laying the groundwork for shifting the message?

I csn almost see boris slapping his hand over shapp's mouth from behind as he's dragged away.

Yes he did tell the truth but was an accident

Tories telling the truth. We can't have that. Could set a dangerous precedent.

4 weeks ago we had the same number of tanker drivers and no problem.

Then a minor hiccup last week meant that 12 (out of 1200) BP garages had a late delivery and ran dry. Along with half a dozen Esso/Tesco garages.

Then the media decided to make a big headline out of it....and the word went mad.

We have a general shortage of drivers (among other jobs like hospitality/care staff etc) partly due to Brexit and made worse by pandemic. But that didn't cause the current mess.

Exactly, but some are some are not capable of thinking rationally and brexit is their go to response.

As someone said anyone who thinks Brexit is the cause is a simpleton.

Do you think all the Euro drivers went home because suddenly thier economies surged in a Covid world, just as one Tory tried to argue....or do you think they went home because the nationalist shite they had to put up with fooked them off attributed no less to brexit

Mmmm one to ponder.....

We don’t have a ‘fuel shortage’ we have a shortage of drivers to deliver the fuel

Speak to BP, they closed and limited the amount of fuel in some of the stations, driver shortage started the fuel crisis, simple facts so nothing to do with a leaked document to the press causing people to panic buy then glad we cleared that up.

What did the leaked document say? And did BP

limit the amount of fuel in their stations? Yes or no? Did panic buying make it worse, of course, did a driver shortage cause it, yes. No driver shortage, no panic buying, no ‘crisis ‘ Was there any problem the month before or even the week before the leak? Im glad you now see that its panic buying that has caused the crisis and not brexit i knew we would get there in the end."

Panic buying didn’t cause the crisis, it made it worse. A driver shortage ‘caused ‘ the crisis and Brexit is a factor in this shortage, no driver shortage, no panic buying, no crisis

"4 weeks ago we had the same number of tanker drivers and no problem.

But that didn't cause the current mess.Exactly, but some are some are not capable of thinking rationally and brexit is their go to response.

As someone said anyone who thinks Brexit is the cause is a simpleton.

Brexit is a factor? Can you explain to me why this crisis only started last week then how comes its not been going on for months?

No idea, can you explain why the driver shortage is a problem this year but wasn’t last year ? so you have no facts to back up your claim then and really have no idea? unbelievable. It seems martin daubney was right.

Yes its very simple covid, last year 30,000 hgv tests were suspended hardly any cars on the road due to lockdown.

Who are the road haulage association blaming for the driver shortage? So your saying Brexit had no affect ? Nothing ? Zip? We are talking about the fuel crisis here why when there was the same ammount of drivers a month ago didnt we have a fuel crisis? its a very simple question and what has it to do with brexit?

We don’t have a ‘fuel shortage’ we have a shortage of drivers to deliver the fuel very good and a nice try to deflect from the question but i never said shortage i said crisis and you know very well what we are talking about. Tbh I like living in greater Manchester, I have a lot of regional pride, not nearly as much national pride . You stated earlier that Brexit happened ages ago, when you get chance can you list all the tangible benefits of leaving the EU ?

Not so sure Brexit is the issue for HGV drivers. It's the exact same here in Ireland.

Have to take into account many HGV driver's opted for new employment opportunities both during and after Covid lockdowns.

Plus as demand increases for fuel due to economic activity lifting there will undoubtedly be supply chain issues in every sector.

It's like all the other first world problems, the press and social media sluts trend the latest rant.

The current crisis has everything to do with Brexit, as does the imminent energy crisis, as does the recent tax rises, as does the announcement to lower the salary limit to start paying back student loans.

Brexit has stopped inward movement of Labour which the country desperately needs (and has always needed). Cabotage ended with Brexit and the pool of HGV drivers including ADR shrank. Lockdowns and school holidays kept the demand for fuel down but September saw the country going back to work. The Eu has similar problems with a shortage of drivers but no other country is experiencing what we are and ironically, the only difference is that we left the EU. You have to truly be a simpleton to think that this has nothing to do with Brexit.

As for energy, our departure of the internal energy market and then knowingly dismantling gas storage facilities afterwards was at best negligent - but on par for this Government.

Tax rises are needed because the “Brexit Dividend” is simply not materialising and instead the Treasury is losing significant funds through a loss of tax revenue. A thriving “Brexit” economy would have negated any need for tax rises but the sanctions we have imposed on ourselves are proving costly to the Treasury. How come no-one could have foreseen that imposing sanctions on ourselves would be costly???

Brexit will keep on giving until this government simply runs out of wiggle room and gets overwhelmed with problems. Only then will the country really be able to have an informed conversation about the damage being done by Brexit,

The shortage started with ostensibly three different companies, only it didn’t. It started with BP, Esso & Tesco.

However BP & Esso are owned by Exxon Mobile, chances are they use the same driver pool, sub contractors etc. So if BP are short for whatever reason so in all likelihood will be Esso soon enough.

Tesco have approx 500 fuel stations run by other companies, the rest they own lock, stock & barrel. The only station reporting issues were the ones run by? You guessed it Esso.

Compare that to Shell who use the same subcontractor Hoyer, except back around January Shell told Hoyer to supply a third more drivers & tractor/trailer units in preparation for the Euro drivers disappearing, signed a contract & THEY GOT THEM.

So now BP need tanker drivers & they can’t get them, one thing that’ll stick in their throats more than anything else is watching the competition earn while they don’t.

So they turned their bad planning & shortsightedness issue into everyone’s issue with the help of the MSM & the general population of gullible sheep.

No. the tory government were warned at a meeting last monday by the fuel industry that this crisis was inevitable unless the tory government acted on the situation. the tory government chose to ignore those warnings and 8 days on has still failed to act on the crisis now known to be entirely of tory governments making.

The situation will be resolved in a few days or a week . The scare mongering media have just caused huge amounts of fuel to be transferred from petrol stations to sit unused in many cars . There was no fuel shortage at pumps previously.Petrol stations have occasionally closed for lack of timely delivery for as long as I have been driving.

Im glad you now see that its panic buying that has caused the crisis and not brexit i knew we would get there in the end. "

Why only 5 thumbs ??

"4 weeks ago we had the same number of tanker drivers and no problem.

But that didn't cause the current mess."

The hiccup was delays at the border control, a direct result of Brexit.

We don’t have a ‘fuel shortage’ we have a shortage of drivers to deliver the fuel "

It does not make a difference to me as a driver at the forecourt, bottom line is the pumps are empty.

I asked a v similar question on another thread.

I'm sure a Brexiter will answer it with perfect logic.

Didn't Brexiteers want controlled immigration? Sounds like exactly what was promised to me

Controlled?, wait until their is chronic shortage then offer temporary 3 month visas that nobody will be interested in? That type of promise ?

11000 EU nationals with HGV licenses left the UK. There are still 250,000 UK based drivers. There is no shortage and no matter how many times this is explained to you it will make no difference - you will never grow tired of being wrong "

The issue is what the 250k British based drivers are doing. And yes there is a shortage of drivers.

Just a thought…. If the government are blaming a leaked report that caused this issue, then would that not suggest that people in high places knew that there was an issue at least coming… but didn’t want people to know about it till they came up with a solution

Is which case, are the government just mad because it has fucked up their timeline!

You can’t say it took them by surprise because they had a f’ing report

Showing your maturity again I see

Go to the ONS, its all on there, the number of HGV drivers has been dropping for years and it's the same across Europe. There were also 40,000 tests cancelled last year but we all know that you're not interested in the facts. You seem to spend your life either clutching at straws or clutching your pearls

They do have a habit of ignoring reports, though.

They ignored Yellowhammer.

They ignored Cygnus.

They ignored the Russia report.

"The shortage started with ostensibly three different companies, only it didn’t.

S"

Except that ignores the full reality. The country has had driver shortages since before January. The pooled resource of trained drivers is all that the country has had available, to be able to drive trucks. Several thousand EU drivers have left the UK, since the Brexit vote, reducing the ability of the country overall. It created a significant deficit in our ability to have enough drivers. Like many things, with a less solid foundation, resilience is stressed and evident more so at some points than others. Brexit caused our infrastructure to become unfit for the needs that we have, during the course of business as usual.

Trying to pretend that Brexit wasn't a substantial cause of our failing delivery abilities, including of vehicle fuel, is disingenuous and tragic to see.

The shortage of hgv drivers for private companies is not a government problem but an industry problem.

Too long has the industry been relying on foreign drivers and not investing in drivers here or improving facilities and working conditions and realistic pay for our drivers.

Yes brexit will have had some effect but there’s no getting away from the fact that this has been happening for years even before brexit

It's been a worsening problem for the last decade.

But why this year and not last year?...

Out of lockdowns,

People still furloughed,

54,000 licences, incl renewals, held up by DVLA because of Covid,

Drivers retiring,

Not enough CPC courses...because of lockdowns,

Medicals not being carried out by Doctors, because they won't see anyone...because of Covid...

But, on Sunday "90% of fuel stations were empty ",

Within 3 days this has dropped to 27%,

By Friday this will be practically zero...

Yep, really sounds like a lack of drivers and fuel.

A town near you

There is a shortage of truck drivers in Ireland as well and I've heard other European countries have problems too.

So does Canada btw.

Granted we don't have an economy any where as big as the UK so driver shortages don't have the same impact.

Maybe Ireland and UK should follow some of the other countries around the world where national service is still in place and many people learn to drive a truck while serving

"The current crisis has everything to do with Brexit, as does the imminent energy crisis, as does the recent tax rises, as does the announcement to lower the salary limit to start paying back student loans.

Only then will the country really be able to have an informed conversation about the damage being done by Brexit,"

Absolutely right

The current crisis shows there's no contingency in the delivery supply chain, due to a shortage of drivers.

A spike in demand, created by many reasons, basically brought the system to shut down, this wasn't the case last month.

Simple question, prior to Brexit, the drivers being "Short" etc etc etc.

Had no one ever stopped for fuel & seen the yellow "Not in use" covers on all the diesel or petrol pumps because they had run out?

Did you shit your pants & panic? or did you just drive to another petrol station?

People especially the media are too quick to bandy big impact sensationalist words around like "Crisis" Etc.

What's that insurance companies tag again "We won't make a drama out of a crisis".

Seems many didn't listen. It wasn't a "Crisis" to start with, we made it one & played right into the hands of big business & the media. it was much less than 1% of a network of fuel stations running out, something that prior to this event has been happening due to RTA's, sickness whatever somewhere in a petrol station around the country probably every blooming day.

When did we turn into such a bunch of whiny morons?

Outside of the bigger towns theres been no issues here, Where I fill up with LPG they had to restrict customers to £20 but this was because they are very small (like two pumps) very rural & wanted to look after the locals & ensure their supply more than any shortage. I've not seen any ques nor has anyone run out in these parts.

Would that have been organised by the Cons to protect their fragile position or Labour themselves because they spent the week slapping their backs but saying fck all?

"

Petrol prices are at an 8 year high

Really? It's dearer in these parts anyway but been 138/135 derv/petrol for weeks & weeks now & i'm sure it's hit 140+ since we moved here three years ago.

LPG is going up though, was 55p eighteen months ago now 75p & due another increase.

S"

Petrol will keep rising in price. OPEC aren't raising production, and thats pushed oil higher. Brent is currently just under 83 dollars per barrel, highest for over three years.

very simple to placate people such as yourself who could not see that it was all caused by panic buying due to some remainer blaming it on brexit.

So i will ask you again how come there is no shortage now have all those who you claim caused it by leaving due to brexit returned or will you finally admit it was panic buying that caused it?

Here's my take Brexit wasn't a factor. panic buying and pandemic where and are the problem we have 8 driver's one spare lorry on average a garage gets refiled every 3 days under normal conditions that's fine but because a driver off covid and panic buying said garages ran out earlier than usual there is little scope to change delivery dates as no extra driver's and limited hours we can work so the army was put on standby to fill those days we couldn't do no point in extra driver's because it was only a few days like now back to working normal hours yes could employ extra driver's but no point as no work now for them hope this helps your Brexit theory.

"Here's my take Brexit wasn't a factor. panic buying and pandemic where and are the problem we have 8 driver's one spare lorry on average a garage gets refiled every 3 days under normal conditions that's fine but because a driver off covid and panic buying said garages ran out earlier than usual there is little scope to change delivery dates as no extra driver's and limited hours we can work so the army was put on standby to fill those days we couldn't do no point in extra driver's because it was only a few days like now back to working normal hours yes could employ extra driver's but no point as no work now for them hope this helps your Brexit theory.

I get what your saying, but why did people start panic buying? because there sheep and the media said that's my theory

What did the media say? Did they base their ‘stories’ on anything, or did they just make it all up? they extended the truth shall I say as said it was a handful so not even what a normal town would have that was having trouble so the bigged it up because it sells

I agree, panic buying mage the situation worse, but the story was based on a ‘leaked report’ so it had some truth behind it

The report wasn't leaked, 'carefully selected excerpts' of the report were handed to somebody at the BBC, somebody who was a staunch remainer

A remainer at the BBC, who'd have thought it

It is irrelevant who leaked it, have you read it?

No more than you have

Well done, have you read the title of the OP?

Yes. You and GS were both wrong. Better luck next time

Of course, denial is probably your only option,

Facts are the only option

The facts are in the report, have a read,

"Anyone having trouble getting petrol now?

Im not plenty round here so my question is have all those drivers lost to brexit ( who caused it allegedly by some on here ) returned in the last week or so ? "

It did seem to finish as quickly as it started. I know the army are good but they must be miracle workers to have sorted it out so quickly. Not sure how many tanker drivers from abroad filled in too but it all helps

or maybe the numbers of people panic buying levelled off….

whatever the reasons it just shows (again) the lack of resilience in UK supply chains….
