That's the line from the report that sums up the response of our government during the early days of Covid.

The report also lists dozens of failures by our government that “led to many thousands of deaths which could have been avoided”

The report is damning. And Johnson fucked off on holiday when he knew it was coming out so he wouldn't have to talk about it.

Surely we all deserve better from our government.

The report and title is in past tense - "Experienced".

Should it not be "Experiencing" as with still 53,000 per year quietly dying, it is by no means over.

Taking away social distancing and masks and reopening, telling people to be sensible and responsible. I don't see much of that from the self centred prices walking around supermarkets and other places with no masks on behaving like nothing ever happened.

After hearing of family after family in my area getting ill, some mild but others never coming home then why are we acting like it is all fine?

Kids with family members testing positive should NOT be in schools who ultimately get infected and take it to others at school to then spread it around yet another family of which some loose their lives.

It is by far, not over and no doubt will be in the next damming report. Incompetence of a conspiring, corrupted government.

We do.

But when the people who championed Brexit without even knowing its implications became the Government, it should be no surprise that the systematic lack of attention to detail resulted in a calamitous Covid response.

Blagging and winging it only goes so far.

We've deserved it from the 70's when climate campaigners where called "tree huggers" and since scientists warning another pandemic was imminent were called "alarmists"..

Makes you wonder what would have happened if those wanting it, had won and disarmed our Nuclear deterrent..

Our failed government said they didn’t realise it was happening. China was locked down since November the year before . Italy was locked down 3 weeks before the UK.

The UK delayed and it cost us deaths, many thousands of deaths. The pandemic couldn’t be predicted, but the forecast of the pandemic making its way west was clear and present …

To be fair, I don't think I mentioned Brexit at all on this topic. And it was obvious a pandemic was a case of when not if.

The Tories even ran Exercise Cygnus back in 2016 to simulate a pandemic. The findings back then were that we were unprepared for a pandemic. A quote from the report: “The UK’s preparedness and response, in terms of its plans, policies and capability, is currently not sufficient to cope with the extreme demands of a severe pandemic that will have a nationwide impact across all sectors.”

The Tories then proceeded to do fuck all to prepare to face a pandemic.

(It never ceases to amaze me the lengths some people go to to defend our woeful government.)

What on Earth are you even talking about? There were calls from all over the place to lock down. Johnson dithered and did fuck all for far too long. He fianlly locked down, far too late, only because the French President told him if he didn't the borders would get shut down between the UK and France.

Other parties may have also not given huge bungs to mates to buy up unusuable PPE. And they may not have chucked 37 billion at Serco and Harding, married to a Tory MP, to create an insufficient test and trace system. Leaders of other parties may also not have skipped several Cobra meetings early in the pandemic. Hell, some leaders likely wouldn't have been fucking stupid enough to boast about shaking hands with all the patients in a Covid ward.

The whole "they're all the same" argument always rears its head. And it's simply not true. Johnson is much, much worse than the norm.

Actually, scientists have been warning about a pandemic for years. Bill Gates has too, actually. So it clearly was predicted.

And you seem to have completely ignored what I just posted. There was a pandemic exercise years before the pandemic that found clear failings. How on Earth does that play into your hindsight narrative?

And you seem to be trying to excuse Johnson on the grounds some other leaders may have done badly too? Is that how low the bar is?

All supporters of the current administration will say one thing hindsight.

Well actually there was foresight, years of austerity which ruined our health service and social care system. Services at breaking point, even before the pandemic, government being warned about being underprepared for a major health crisis. They ridiculed scientists at every opportunity before the pandemic as part of their rhetoric, remember hunt and hawkins?

They were told to work with local government, they ignored that advice, they were told that herd immunity wouldn’t be effective they delayed lockdown.

There were red flags, the government chose to ignore them, it was deliberate, they were more concerned with ideology and pandering to a base of skeptics and deniers.

This is squarely on them.

They go on about lessons to be learned, this shouldn’t be directed at the adminsitration, but at the electorate. Next time you decide to vote for a tory government, don’t bother, because they are not a responsible government, who put ideology in front of common sense.

So did people vote a Boris Johnson led Conservative party into government primarily (or evenly exclusively) on the basis of “get brexit done”?

The answer is yes.

So those who voted for them got the government they wanted ergo they must be happy with this government and their performance.

Maybe, just maybe, if people had been less obsessed with Brexit and actually looked at the type of people (and their policies and voting history) they might have thought twice. But not they wanted brexit at all cost.

Well that cost has been extremely high because, as I have said, these people are inept and only in the Cabinet because of their support for Johnson and brexit.

There are plenty of very capable tories (regardless of politics) but none of them are in government.

I’m ignoring your comment on “people like me” as it is baseless and the democratic validity of the original brexit vote (even though I was talking about 2019 GE) has all manner of holes in it. Not least that it was an advisory referendum and therefore not legally binding.

Brexit was voted for. And it has happened. (And is it happening as an ongoing process.) That's simply reality. People accept that. But it doesn't mean they have to pretend Brexit is wonderful when mountains of evidence show it's a disaster.

As to divisions: who the hell do you think divided the country over Brexit in the 1st place? That would be a chap called Cameron. And who do you think widened those divisions when he saw a way to ride the issue into Downing Street? That would be a chap called Johnson.

When it comes to the opposition, you're trotting out a very strange and twisted line that I've seen a lot on social media. Labour are somehow to blame for the the terrible damage the Tories have done to this country. Eh?

Yep, people who voted for the face eating leopard party are now upset that the leopards are eating their faces so decide to blame the party they didn’t vote for!

The mental gymnastics Brexit supporters are contorting into to explain this shitshow is breathtaking. It’s all the fault of remain supporters that the project fear we warned about is becoming project reality.

Here’s the crux of it...

The referendum asked one binary question (in a non binding advisory referendum no less):

Should the UK leave the EU Yes/No

Everyone who voted No (ie remain) voted for the status quo, for this to be as they were.

Those who voted to leave however had multiple different versions of what that meant in practice:

- Hard Brexit

- Soft Brexit (abide by some EU rules for continued access to CM etc)

- Norway style (EEA)

- etc

The UK Govt (led by Cameron) were so arrogant they simply didn’t believe the vote would go against them (ie Cameron was remain). But they should have been 100% committed to a two stage referendum so that once the vote to leave was confirmed a second referendum should have been held to determine our future relationship with the EU.

THAT would have been democratic and would have been more acceptable to many of those who voted remain.

Instead you ask 10 people who voted leave what they wanted as an outcome and you get 10 answers (including some who simply didn’t know and hadn’t really thought it through but just wanted to stick it to Cameron/the establishment).

And to add to that, the cornerstone of many people’s reasons for being anti-EU was the concept that the EU bullied the UK and forced us to accept a tonne of legislation.

A complete fallacy that conveniently ignored:

- the UK was the 2nd biggest economy in EU

- the UK was the 1st most powerful military in EU

- the UK was part of the EU jointly making the legislation

- B/w 98-99% of EU legislation was supported/ratified by UK

- The UK had a veto

- The UK had a unique position in the EU enjoying all the benefits while retaining our own currency and not being part of Schengen

And yet apparently the UK was too weak to not be bullied by the other EU countries! Aww poor little weak UK!

AND the same people making that argument go on to tell us that the UK is a lion on the world stage that will be able to go toe-to-toe with everyone else in securing trade deals etc. It is non-sensical.

We can’t even negotiate a deal with Australia (that has a fifth of our population) that favours the UK! Good luck with USA, China and India!

Given our special status in the EU, brexit was always a one way door in my mind. It would have to be an almighty fuck up for there to be enough ppl to say they'd go back and adopt the euro etc.

We have to crack on with what we have now. But that doesn't mean ppl can't hold others to account for decisions made or beliefs proved to be wrong. ... That's part of any learning process.

"The leaflet that tbe Cameron goverment sent to every household, quite clearly stated that "the Goverment would respect the outcome of the referendum and implement its result"

Not legally binding as such (it was tested in the courts) but as good as.

Yep I blame Cameron for most of this. His arrogance was his undoing along with his spineless reaction to right wing aspects of his own party running scared from whatever Farage’s next scam, I mean political party, was up next.

Of course the likes of Cameron are insulated from the impact by their immense wealth. It’s all a fucking game to them!

If Farage was such a factor, with such a new and niche political party, and Brexit is a disaster, then where is the "take us back in" party?

Surely there are many investors in such an idea?

Too early, yet not too early to judge brexit and the future of the U.K. tho hmmm"

That’s correct, way too early, when did you first decide you wanted the UK to leave the EU?
