The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has confirmed today that the Greater London Authority (GLA) will leave its current City Hall home next year and move its headquarters to The Crystal building in the Royal Docks.
The move will save the GLA Group £61m over five years and £126m over ten years.
With the GLA Group facing a £500m financial black hole this year and next due to Covid-19, and tax income expected to be lower for several years to come, the savings will be used by the Mayor to protect front-line public services including the police, the London Fire Brigade, and key transport services and to invest in London’s economic recovery.'

If he had not of frozen fair prices for 4 years tfl would not be in such a hole.
If he hadn't set is budget on cross rail being open when he took office tfl wouldn't be in such a hole. (It's 4 years late and billions over budget)
His latest budget of getting £2M a day for the ULEZ is only getting £600,000 a day so another hole created.
Plus as Mayor of London he should of done so much more to get people vaccinated but guess what London is the worse in England.! |

Khan has spent the majority of his time as mayor clearing up the mess Bojo made.
Are we forgetting the mess that is the new Routemasters, Garden Bridge, Emirates Cable Cars?
Bojo left TFL in tatters with an annual deficit of £1.5B.
The Conservative party purposely didnt give TFL and LU relief during covid, despite giving money to every other private rail franchise.
They held TFL at random unless Khan did the following:
- Extend the congestion charge zone to N and S circular.
- Increase TFL fares
- Increase London Council Tax.
Back when Bojo was Major he did the following:
- Cancelled a planned extension of the congestion charge zone
- Froze TFL fares
- Reduced London Council Tax
Back when Boris was mayor, TFL used to get £1B from the Treasury. Wonder why they don't get the same funding now...? |

The Congestion Charge zone had not been extended to the north and south circulars, the ULEZ has and this is a Khan policy alone. Allegedly this has been done to improve air quality in inner London despite the original ULEZ zone (central London only) being a total failure in this regard.
The only net result of this expansion is that many households are now up to £4500 a year worse off due to not being in a position to change vehicle and businesses losing custom due to drivers of offending vehicles taking their custom elsewhere.

Let's not forget as well that it's Khan who used the covid crises as an excuse to segregate off lanes of traffic and block entire roads in the name of creating cycle lanes and "going green." All this achieved was worsening the traffic and journey times in London and increasing emissions from idling engines

The actual changes demanded by govt was an increase in the charge and charging hours of the Congestion Charge, not an increase in it's boundaries. Instead of standing up for ordinary Londoners and pushing back, Khan rolled over and accepted these measures despite it being detrimental to London's businesses and "night time" economy.

Sadiq is also the man who wants to bring in a charge drive in to the boundaries of London. So somebody who has been priced out of the city and suburbs but needs to commute in to outer Londoner could now be hit with up to £800 a year for the privilege.

I'm not London based, so take all I say on the matter with a pinch of salt...but it appears to everywhere else in the country that Khan is being blamed for alot of the changes the rest of the country also faces, changes which have been government imposed.
In Coventry we've had systematic attacks on our public services, travel and "low skilled" industry. But unlike ldn we don't have a mayor for the government to blame, so here, the government are seen as responsible. |

I literally don't know anyone who is £4500 worse off as a result. This is a claim constantly pushed by car magazines and some newspapers. This is the worse case scenario for people with the worse polluting vehicles.
ULEZ was announced many years ago. Everyone I knew with non compliant vehicles sold them to people outside ULEZ.
Doesn't matter if this isn't congestion charge in name, it's a similar scheme. In fact, it's actually better than what the government demanded as anyone outside ULEZ can enter with a compliant vehicle without paying.
ULEZ wasnt pushed out because the first phase was a "failure". It was always going to be pushed out the N and S circular.
Pollution in London is terrible so it needs ULEZ otherwise it will just get worse.

Many cycle lanes put up during covid were temporary to allow more people to use bikes.
As for the permanent ones, a recent study (Imperial College) shows that they haven't worsened traffic in London at all.
Daily mail recently posted an article saying a study says the opposite. But the 'study' was literally a quote from the a company called Inrix (with links to the car industry) pretty much saying "traffic is worse because we said so" with no data backing the claims up.
Note, Inrix has massive financial interest in proliferation of cars and reduction of cycle infrastructure..

There are a few reasons people don't like Khan:
The cabbie and automotivr industry despise him as they view him as a threat to their conservative industry (they hate change).
Khan has the nerve to stand up to the government and call out the Tories for their bullshit during covid in regards to funding.
Khan is brown.
Khan is Labour (that being said, many labour voters who are bus drivers, cabbies, etc succumbed to the campaign against him by the car industry).
Khan has spoken out against Trump. |

To be fair with regards to TFL … since the majority of their income comes from people travelling and it some points during this travelling has been down by 80-90%, the government were always going to have to help out…
I think the bigger argument at the moment is that because the rest of the rail network is still basically nationalised atm, why are they specifically picking on TFL by stopping their funding… |

Plus on top of that Crossrail is another £4 Bilion over budget and almost 4 years behind schedule under Khan's watch.
Interestingly I have been told that unopened Crossrail stations are now having to be relamped and yet they have not been seen by a single paying passenger.! |

I think the bigger argument at the moment is that because the rest of the rail network is still basically nationalised atm, why are they specifically picking on TFL by stopping their funding…
I don't see a £4 Billion bale out as stopping funding.
Plus on top of that Crossrail is another £4 Bilion over budget and almost 4 years behind schedule under Khan's watch.
Interestingly I have been told that unopened Crossrail stations are now having to be relamped and yet they have not been seen by a single paying passenger.!"

"The Congestion Charge zone had not been extended to the north and south circulars, the ULEZ has and this is a Khan policy alone. Allegedly this has been done to improve air quality in inner London despite the original ULEZ zone (central London only) being a total failure in this regard.
The only net result of this expansion is that many households are now up to £4500 a year worse off due to not being in a position to change vehicle and businesses losing custom due to drivers of offending vehicles taking their custom elsewhere.

Let's not forget as well that it's Khan who used the covid crises as an excuse to segregate off lanes of traffic and block entire roads in the name of creating cycle lanes and "going green." All this achieved was worsening the traffic and journey times in London and increasing emissions from idling engines

The actual changes demanded by govt was an increase in the charge and charging hours of the Congestion Charge, not an increase in it's boundaries. Instead of standing up for ordinary Londoners and pushing back, Khan rolled over and accepted these measures despite it being detrimental to London's businesses and "night time" economy.

Sadiq is also the man who wants to bring in a charge drive in to the boundaries of London. So somebody who has been priced out of the city and suburbs but needs to commute in to outer Londoner could now be hit with up to £800 a year for the privilege.
I literally don't know anyone who is £4500 worse off as a result. This is a claim constantly pushed by car magazines and some newspapers. This is the worse case scenario for people with the worse polluting vehicles.
ULEZ was announced many years ago. Everyone I knew with non compliant vehicles sold them to people outside ULEZ.
Doesn't matter if this isn't congestion charge in name, it's a similar scheme. In fact, it's actually better than what the government demanded as anyone outside ULEZ can enter with a compliant vehicle without paying.
ULEZ wasnt pushed out because the first phase was a "failure". It was always going to be pushed out the N and S circular.
Pollution in London is terrible so it needs ULEZ otherwise it will just get worse.

Many cycle lanes put up during covid were temporary to allow more people to use bikes.
As for the permanent ones, a recent study (Imperial College) shows that they haven't worsened traffic in London at all.
Daily mail recently posted an article saying a study says the opposite. But the 'study' was literally a quote from the a company called Inrix (with links to the car industry) pretty much saying "traffic is worse because we said so" with no data backing the claims up.
Note, Inrix has massive financial interest in proliferation of cars and reduction of cycle infrastructure..

Regarding the ULEZ expansion (again), studies have proven that the original ULEZ has cut emissions but a negligible amount. Based on this there is no justifiable reason (on environmental grounds) to extend it, but seeing as how motorists are viewed as cash cows by both the govt and Khan it went ahead, as will (most probably) the punitive charges to drive into outer London. How it is fair or acceptable to pick the pockets of ordinary workers to prop up a public transport system I do not know but if it was a Tory mayor the outrage and "class war accusation" would be very loud indeed. Especially as not everybody is in the position to fork out for a ULEZ compliant vehicle |

Why does Sadiq Khan keep saying crime in London has been falling when it hasn't. For example between 2008 and 2016 when Boris Johnson was London Mayor, 118 teenagers were murdered. However since Sadiq Khan been Mayor from 2016 there's been London over 160 teenagers (and counting) that have been murdered. I dont know the exact numbers you are looking at, but they may be factually true, but thats only part of crime. So you both may be right.
I've seen a graph on all murders.
The rate was falling loads with Ken Livingstone and that continued for a part with BJ. But the started rising again. That rise continued with the start of SK but has since tirned the corner. So one may argue that BJ has low numbers because he rode the tide of KL, but made things worse. And SK has worse numbers coz he's had to turn around the situation BJ left London in.
It's a position. I'd say just quoting a number each may not be entirely helpful for a discussion |

Actually even though the polls have Sadiq Khan ahead by 20 plus points, he won the first round of votes by only 5% in the last election also the number of people that voted for him last time was down from when he first won the Mayoralty. Many folks I've spoken to since 2021 told me they're not voting in this year London Mayoral election because they dont like him but they dont like the other canditates either. While I dont think Susan Hall will do a great job, if she happens to do a margainally better job the Sadiq Khan then I will vote for her reluctuntaly. |

They've fielded a useless candidate in Susan Hall because they DON'T WANT to win the mayoral election.
They want to keep Sadiq Khan as a useful idiot to impose unfair fines and levies (like ULEZ) whilst maintaining a facade of outrage.

Leaving current building and moving to Royal Docks will save £61m over five years - £6m more than originally forecasted
The savings will help the Mayor protect front-line public services and invest in London’s economic recovery
Moving to The Crystal, a building already owned by the GLA, will help support huge regeneration project in East London
The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has confirmed today that the Greater London Authority (GLA) will leave its current City Hall home next year and move its headquarters to The Crystal building in the Royal Docks.
The move will save the GLA Group £61m over five years and £126m over ten years.
With the GLA Group facing a £500m financial black hole this year and next due to Covid-19, and tax income expected to be lower for several years to come, the savings will be used by the Mayor to protect front-line public services including the police, the London Fire Brigade, and key transport services and to invest in London’s economic recovery.'
Maybe he should give up his Range Rover as well.
As he wants to add £20 to everyone’s council tax in London.

Can I just remind you London Council tax is one of the lowest in the UK. £20.00 per year is nothing compared to other parts of the UK price rises and we all don't benefit from.the added London Waiting Allownce.

Seriously Khan and any council run by Labour have to go as Im sick of the LTNs, CANs, Road restrictions on specific streets, 20 MPH roads on top of council tax going up, crime going up,travel fare going up. Having Khan for another 4 years will be the worse case scenario as well as depressing and I dont care about what the stupid polls says because the same polls are also saying his unpopular so thats how you know the polls are dodgy. Time for a new Mayor |

I refuse to vote for Khan (despite the poor quality of the other candidates) because a vote for him legitimises and accepts the bad decisions that he has made and his inaction in dealing with the issues holding London back. A vote for Khan just encourages him and to carry on as he is doing now.

And on the issue of London council tax being lower than other places, London has a much higher population density than other places (more taxpayers so theoretically lower bills). But living costs in the capital are substantially more than elsewhere, majority of workers don't get a London Weighting allowance. |
