Double standards…

By (user no longer on site) OP     over a year ago

There is a complete imbalance of power that is simmering under the surface of all of this saga.

If this situation was one of the NATO nations engaging with Ukraine, for example the UK or the US, would it be in the news cycle? Would there be this widespread outrage? Would people be painting themselves blue and yellow and sending money and weapons to them?

No one really bats an eyelid when a Western power does the exact same thing that Russia has done. They’ve put up a reason for invasion that may or may not be true (Iraq WMDs comes to mind) and then gone blazing in, civilians have been killed as well as Ukrainian forces (again, Iraq comes to mind) and they feel, rightly or wrongly, that the war is being fought for a reason (as do all wars).

Is it any wonder that there is huge anti western sentiment in the world when we just do whatever the fuck we feel like, and face none of the consequences that a country like Russia is and will face?

How many countries has the US interfered with? How many have the invaded? How many leaders have they had overthrown or assassinated? Why is it that they get to pick and choose which groups are bad and which aren’t? I mean, you ask the average American what they feel for Nazis, they wouldn’t be very positive. But, you ask the CIA that question, and it’s all a little bit grey then. Because of course they will happily work with them if it is in their interest?

If we want a peaceful world, then maybe we should hold our allies, such as the US, accountable for using Ukraine in their little world dominance games. Maybe hold them accountable for protecting the Ukrainian nazis from the Nuremberg trials.

And this isn’t to say Russia are clean. But don’t hold them to a standard that isn’t being held by anyone else either. Don’t hold them to account while not holding ourselves or our allies accountable too.

After this conflict is resolved, there needs to be a line in the sand which NO NATION is allowed to cross. Not one rule for this gang and others for the rest.

All of which is neatly backed, bank rolled and decorated with new weapons, then tied up with a nice Union Jack and put in a Stars and Stripes basket with kisses and well wishes from all of the same leaders currently putting faux, emotion stirring “war room” photos all over their social medias because they are so concerned about the Ukrainian people.

Then again, maybe they do care more about this, the Ukrainians are (checks news report wording about Ukrainian refugees) “white, european and from a civilised country”.

"Listening to you 2 maybe you would prefer that the world just left the Ukrainians to it then "

I would prefer that the United States via the CIA and others hadn’t used them as a stick to poke the Russians with since the Second World War. Both the US and Russia are to blame, but, the difference is that only Ukrainian and Russian lives are being lost right now, whilst the US points the finger in faux horror at the mess they deliberately made worse.

Also, if it was us or the US or any other NATO nation doing this, who would be rushing to defend them then? Nobody.

In fact, probably Russia. Ironically.

But we went and as far as I know the west has no intention of invading Ukraine.

Do you really believe that he would not have eventually gone into Ukraine? He wants to control the whole country giving him full access right through to the Black Sea.

Israel who stole the Palestinians land? Who are backed by the US and many other nations? The ones with the army who are encircled around what is essentially an open air prison?

Get some perspective.

If you feel more sorry for the Ukrainians than you do the Palestinians (both of whom have histories of terrorism and guerilla tactics against the people they are fighting right now) then maybe you subscribe to the same view as the news reporters I mentioned earlier…

You swerved the question.

What he wants and what the news are saying he wants are probably very different. How do you know what he wants? Only he and his closest know.

Anyway, none of that is the point of this thread, the hypocrisy of it all is.

"Palestinians (who are incidentally NOT indigenous to the land) are terrorists who kill innocent people. Try reading history. "

It actually depends on the definition of being indigenous. Many scholars accept that both people have a legitimate claim...

“Whether one considers Palestinian history lengthy enough to think them Indigenous or not is a moot point. If time is the issue, it’s only a matter of time until they qualify, so it is most logical to treat them now as having an indigenous claim. To do so in the way I’ve described legitimizes their claims without doing violence to truth or history.

Jewish indigeneity and indigenous rights in Israel must be respected for the international idea of Indigenous Rights to make any sense at all. Yet the Palestinian claim to indigeneity should not be dismissed either.”

Palestinian Christians and Muslims constituted 90% of the population of Palestine in 1919, just before the third wave of Jewish immigration under the post-WW1 British Mandatory Authority.

Palestinians are an ethnonational group descending from peoples who have inhabited the region of Palestine over the millennia and who are today culturally and linguistically Arab.

The difference is the West is living in the now while Russia, Palestinians/Hamas, Nazis, Communists, Isis, Taliban are living in the past.

Pootin still longs for an ol Russian Empire from 50 60 100 years ago, the stupid saddo.

The West has a free or freer press that challenges its leaders and exposes wrong doing.

The West isn't perfect but it's way better than other regimes.

Since the end of the cold war it's held open arms to Russia, China,Middle East.

Then at a drop of a hat they turn on us. That's the double standard.

Russia using the West in Iraq as validation for their exploits are pathetic effectively lowering Russia to the very level they condemn, a self defeating arguement. The West didn't intentionally bomb women and children and hospitals like Russia is.

Ukrainians are not using human sheilds like Isis.

It will end in tears for Russia.

Politics, regardless of left, right or centre-leaning, is a game of manoeuvre, counter-manoeuvre, outmanoeuvre, bluff, subvert, alliance, separation, strengthen, weaken, but most of all, it's a game of survival.

Survival for the politician and his or her political career, and if they are so inclined, survival of their party and survival of their nation.

Nothing is ever as it seems and that's because if it was known then certain people would be jolly cross.

Jolly cross people tend to vote out politicians, thus ending careers.

A certain amount of "turbulence" is necessary to keep the passengers worried about the flight, rather than the captain or the destination or the flight crew.

But going back on point, it's just how politics works. Group A are Bad. Now they are Good. Now they are indifferent. But they have something we want. But they won't give it to us. We need to find ways to encourage them. But they refuse encouragement. Now they are opposing us, so we need to find ways to counter that and put the pressure on.

It's just how it all works. Always has and always will. We are political animals.

Indeed! I got called anti-Semitic and racist on here for pointing out that that many media (and Hollywood film companies) post WW2 were run by Jewish people and that it was therefore natural that films/programmes about the holocaust would be predominantly focused on the Jewish story and not that of gypsies, slavs and other groups targeted by the Nazis.

It wasn’t even a criticism, just a statement of fact.

I never got an apology either!

We did deal with them, in Northern Ireland. The Queen even shook hands with Martin McGuinness.

The UK Government conversed with actual terrorists. They got a significant reduction in violence in Northern Ireland.

They also helped out the Mujahedin - who were freedom fighters.

Can we at least get our facts right on Yemen?

Up to 2015 Yemen had a government led by president Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi. This was recognized by the UN. In 2015 Iran funded Houthi terrorists started an armed conflict which is still going on (reminds me of Russia/Ukraine).

The legitimate Yemeni government called on support from other countries. A coalition of 9 countries from west Asia and North Africa responded (half-heartedly due to fears of Iran?). The conflict is still going on....started by and funded by Iran as a proxy war with the Saudis....it's just another example of religious war between Sunni and Shia muslims. These have been on/off for over 1000 yrs!!

If it was a NATO country making the first move, then under it’s own constitution the other countries, would not get involved in backing that country, the first few lines of its constitution states that it is a defensive alliance!

The best example of this would be Turkey and their dispute with Kurdistan, where nato countries not only did not back up the Turks but basically sent in peacekeeping entities as a deterrent

I think un resolution 1066 is still the default position on Israel in that they should under international law go back to the pre 1967 territorial boundaries

But you have seen how ineffective the UN Security Council can be in that everything negative is vetoed by Russia, whereas anything too strong on criticism of Israel is often vetoed by the US

Ukrainians are not using human sheilds like Isis.

It will end in tears for Russia.

You’re talking nonsense. Arms wide open? Were they wide open when Putin proposed Russia joining NATO? But then again, the problem with that would then be, who would the US use as the nuclear boogie man?

Maybe the West and our leaders are to far up our own arses and believe we can do whatever we want to whoever we want and fuck with everyone and nothing will happen?

You mentioned nazis, Ukraine is a deeply nazified country, it has been since the Second World War. In fact during the Second World War the divide between who fought for the nazis and who fought against is almost exactly the same divide as the pro Russian and pro Russian divide they have today!

Didn’t they? I guess there were no leaks of human rights abuses and war crimes exposed by wiki leaks then?

But, if course, we are the goods guys, all the others are backwards… and yet with that attitude and the amount of double standards we exude in geopolitical interaction, we wonder why so many countries hate the west.

Ukraine deeply "nazified". With a Jewish president elected by 80+% of the population!! Really??"

A bit like saying the US doesn't have a racism problem because Obama was President.

Yes not even close, because unlike Ukraine the US doesn't have a white only supremacist battalion in their Military, like the Azov battalion.

You do know that 4.5m Ukranians fought FOR the red army and that 250000 partisans fought in occupied Ukraine. Indeed it was a Ukranian general that accepted the German surrender at Stalingard. You knew that didnt you?

Sure some fought for Germany, some volunteers, some forcibly conscripted. Roughly (80,000) So did volunteers from France, Spain, Scandinavian countries and othere does that make those countries Nazi sympathisers as well?

That’s a lot of people fighting for the Nazis. Simple as that. You can try your whataboutism with someone else, the fact is that original nazi ideology (not watered down to not wearing Levi’s ,not sympathy, actual genocidal ideology) was extraordinarily strong back then and still is today, there have been many many exposes, documentaries and reports on it, even though that’s a bit hush hush now that the country is propped up by the US.

Imagine if the KKK were 250k strong back then (which they probably were, if not more) and their presence and ideology was just as strong if not stronger today, with a literal military battalion, would people just be waving that away as if it was nothing? No.

I've seen the hypocrisy of this world.. comparisons of the awful situation in the Ukraine at the hand's of russia, yet it's ok for Israel to commit the same war crimes against palistinians, or sell weapons to the Saudias, Qatar etc.. both evil regimes and allowing war crimes in the Yemen continue, Indeed allow war crimes committed by American personnel.

The hypocrisy makes sense when it's not about the free world protecting others from tyrany, it's the American government using others for its own ends.

America has a pathological hatred for certain countries they can't control.

Russia, Iran, venesuala, even Cuba, do sets out by any means to harm them at anyone's expense.

That's why waving a palistinians flag at a foot ball match is frowned upon yet it's ok waving a Ukrainian flag
