It still is in great swathes of America. The bias of senate seats towards the southern gun loving states despite other areas having more people means they won’t pass restrictions any time soon,
What a tragic state to be in.
Even if they ban them how the hell do they collect in over 300m guns? |

It won't happen, sheer fantasy to think otherwise. It isn't the vested interests or anything like that, it's the culture and mindset behind it. Why will this shooting change anything? There'll be another school shooting soon enough, the name of this one will be forgotten by most here in a few months, only to be replaced by the latest one and on it goes, just as night follows day. 6k gun deaths this year, not including suicide shootings, and does anyone really think this shooting will change anything? |

The above speaks to your sensibilities. Do you believe that the right to bear arms should not be infringed? Or do you think the 'militia' needs regulating?
The world was a vastly different place in the late 1700s. A mass shooting then would be difficult to undertake without accomplices. The constitution has changed in the past and will probably change in the future. But amending this, simply means a declaration of war against too many Americans. A lot more people will die needlessly before meaningful change will happen. |

Exactly. The NRA is an extremely powerful lobbyists, and the arms manufacturers heavily sponsor both parties in the US.
Children getting mass murdered won't make a jot of a difference. |

Not sure how accurate these numbers are.. But isn't it something like 6000 deaths due to guns a year.? Twin towers was something like 3000....which caused emergency legislation and war on terror.... They can do it if they want to. |

You would need 60 votes in the senate for anything to become law… the democrats have 50… which means you would need 10 republican senators to agree

So far this year it's 7626, that's deliberate and accidental gun deaths, excluding suicide. That's a normal number for this time of year. |

Most of the mass shootings are committed with legally acquired guns. It's not nutters and criminals that do this, it's normal people that have "fallen down". |

Dunblane, Winnenden, Port Arthur, gun control works when done at a national level. But in a lot of cases in the states, an 'illegally held' firearm is one that was purchased legally but taken into a state with more stringent gun laws. It effectively outlines the need for greater control at a national level and the limitations of devolution on some issues.

Hmm. Perhaps that was a bad phrase to use.
I wasn't attempting to soften their crimes at all. I was trying to say that these killings aren't caused by hardened criminals, or the sort of person that mental health checks could screen for.

Two armed offices confronted him at the school followed by two more. He still managed to enter the school and kill the children. Theory debunked.
The Republican politicians are in the pocket of the gun lobby. It’s that simple.
With nearly 400million guns in the country what isn’t so simple is fixing the problem.
Maybe to start
Background checks
No sales to under 30year olds as they commit the most crimes
No public carry concealed or otherwise and jail if you do.
No licence to hold a gun then off you go to jail.
Small steps to push the guns back a bit,
Reduce the flood then go after the illegal guns. |

To see the scale of the problem scroll down this website and look at some of the tables. It’s mind blowing how big the problem is. Look at the annual state sales figures.
Interesting how the year more guns were sold more deaths occurred. Wonder if there was an increase in mental illness too which would explain the increase. ( Obviously the NRA say that’s the problem).

We’re distant from it here in the UK but my brother lives in Chicago.
He’s fortunate to live in a safe area which has its own police force and private security patrolling the streets. He also lives near the Obama’s old home so there’s been a load of armed to the teeth marines constantly on watch for years so crime isn’t a problem for him.
The thing he told me was scary. On a quiet still summers evening you can hear gunfire from the south side all the time.
He said the hotter it gets the more gunfire there is. Beer and guns. Hundreds of shootings over a weekend.
If you’ve ever been through that south side and I have, then you can see clearly that crime is going to be one of the very few options to escape . It’s a very deprived housing area bigger than most cities in this country, but the guns make it so much worse.

It's the likes of Ted Cruz, Trump and Governor Abbot who's job it is to make sure that mass murderers have access to the best battlefield weaponry possible. And to give credit where credit is due they have done a stellar job in that regard, keeping America yet again at number 1 in the world when it comes to school children killings. |
