You guys need to do that yourself.

Closing your 750 military bases around the world would be the first step.

Then someone else will have to step into the vacuum. But I doubt it would be the UK.

The media here reports a lot about events in the US. So it's on people's minds.

US foreign policy effects a lot of the world.

US environmental policy also effects the rest of the world.

Have to say I do find it quite ironic since the OP dived in with both feet into the thread about the UK Home Secretary

Or maybe we are just a bunch of globalists who realise that what happens in one place may affect another…. Not necessarily directly but indirectly

I read it to enlighten myself. The majority do not understand a tree getting cut down or a stabbing in croydon.if I mention a stabbing in Croydon here it would be considered a normalcy because Croydon is a city in Pennsylvania. It happens. It doesn't make headlines for the shock value.

Relative to Pennsylvania, Croydon has a crime rate that is higher than 85% of the state's cities and towns of all sizes. Importantly, when you compare Croydon to other communities of similar population, then Croydon crime rate (violent and property crimes combined) is quite a bit higher than average. It must be a Croydon thing.

I think most countries are fascinated with US because they are dependent on them either politically or economically.

Political dependency is one way because US does have a huge army and many countries are dependent on US to protect them. Economic dependency is two way because US is both a massive supplier and consumer. If two baltic countries go at each other, it won't even make it to news. If something big happens in US, it affects other countries both economically and politically.

Sure US could isolate itself politically by getting out of NATO and forcing other countries to build their own armies to protect themselves. But US can never isolate itself economically without major repercussions. If a recession hits US, it's almost guaranteed to hit every other country.

I think in answer to your question OP.

It’s like a bad melodrama pitching one crime family against the other. One headed up by a guy who likes to sniff kids when he knows what day of the week it is. And the other an obnoxious financial grifter.

It’s a fascinating time to be alive.

The USA is currently the big dog on the planet, economically, militarily, culturally. This really kicked off following WWI and solidified during/after WWII.

In part this was driven by the USA being a young vibrant country, unencumbered by history and awash with untapped continent spanning natural resources and (eventually) a huge population.

The clock keeps turning and one day it will be someone else. Many were betting on China. We will see.

Through history there is always a big alpha who claims top dog position for a while. Before the USA it was Britain, before that France, before that Spain.

Regardless of the personal views of folks like Blu, right now the USA wants to still be top dog projecting power and influencing the way the rest of the world operates. If enough people begin to think like Blu then eventually that could change and the USA could become isolationist again. While that is easier to imagine from a military/world policeman pov it is harder to imagine economically or culturally in our lifetimes.

"Why? "

You will find it is not just other countries politics, it is anyone or anything that does not conform to the the narrow minded amongst us....

We are a nation of curtain twitchers and have some of the worlds most single minded people.

You can spot them a mile off, they blame everything on a government and yet want governments to make all the choices and that is what leads them to criticise other countries governments.

That kind of reminds me of NI and their parliament being unable to function because of Unionist politicians refusing to play the game.

Do Republicans see it as just a financial issue about Ukraine? I also wonder if the Hunter Biden stories have made it acceptable to them to now dump Ukraine? It’s hard to fathom where this goes from here but I am pretty sure it won’t be good for Europe or Africa if Russia win this thing

What would the point of continuing it, if you want to withdraw from the world stage. Would it allow itself to be shrunk..?

"I believe what happens in America affects the rest of the world, be it for good or bad. but it shouldn't. It's our choices."

But it will. The US is an economic superpower, what happens there will influence and affect what happens in smaller countries. Biden won the last presidential election, as a result NATO and Europe know they have a strong proponent on European security. If Trump wins, that goes. European and NATO states may then recognise the need to raise defence spending, perhaps beyond the 2% target. In addition to that, there could be increased tariffs back and forwards. How Trump would respond to the barbaric extension of the Russian invasion of Ukraine would also affect the West, and beyond. I doubt he'll be able to secure peace but the grain deal could be implemented again. This will be something Russia may be quietly keen to do given how unsafe the Black Sea fleet are. That's just focused on the Western world, relations with China could deteriorate. The US has a choice but in our interconnected world, the ripples will reach far beyond its shores.

But wasn’t a lot of that based on them giving their old Migs to Ukraine and replacing them with American planes? So what Joe gives away with one hand in supporting Ukraine he gets back in the other through repeat orders from allies and therefore lots of American workers get to keep their jobs. How do the Republicans see that scenario?

"So… are you or am I going to explain to these lovely people in Britain the impending government shutdown…..

Government is going to shutdown because they can't make concessions on funding for Ukraine and border security."

That’s one way to describe what is going to happen

There is going to government shutdown because the republicans between themselves can’t come up with a budget

What normally happens is that the president proposes a budget of spending for the following year… and then the House of Representatives and the president negotiate on what can be spent…. They then vote on it in a budget bill… it then goes to the senate to be voted on ( or they can also request extra amendments to the bill) .. the senate votes on it… then goes to the president to sign the bill into law.. easy pesy

What has happened this time is that president presented a bill…. And then negotiated an agreement with the leader of the house (who represents the largest party) Kevin McCarthy , on behalf of the largest party .. for a budget to be passed…

So… okay… everything normal so far!

Kevin McCarthy only has a majority of 8 in the house … which means that it only takes 4 of them to vote against it

Mccarthy was so desperate to become speaker that as part of the deal he reduced the number of people it will take to call for a vote to get rid of him… it use to be 15, he agreed to reduce it to 1!

Anyway… after the deal was agreed.. a bunch of about a dozen hard right house republicans decided they didn’t like the deal ….

So because they won’t vote for a deal, .. we are at an impasse … no money… shutdown

So… who is going to be affected…..

Answer… about every federal employee!

"

Thanks for that Fabio

Similar level of belligerence to that seen in NI then….but quite interesting how out on a limb McCarthy must have been if he had to put himself in such jeopardy to get it through…. I bet there’s a lot of anger at those republicans right now

"So… are you or am I going to explain to these lovely people in Britain the impending government shutdown…..

Government is going to shutdown because they can't make concessions on funding for Ukraine and border security.

All they have to do is present a clean bill without Ukraine funding and it would pass. American people shouldn't be held hostage to giving Ukraine billions.

Federal employees are basically split into 3 different types… essential, non essential, and contractors…

Essential federal employees… such as army, border service ect… they won’t get paid, but they are still expected to go to work! They will get their money back paid at the end of the dispute

Non essential federal employees… they will basically be furloughed! No work stay home, won’t get paid now, will get back paid after.. eventually

Federal contractors…. They will be sent home, they won’t be paid during the closure and will not get any back pay

Not good! ……

The senate proposed a continuation resolution (CR) with is a short term budget bill keeping spending at the 2023 level, with extra money in there for Ukraine and for disaster emergencies.. the senate bill is bipartisan

It went to the Republican majority house.. they are saying they will not vote on it

The hard line republicans in the house are saying to McCarthy “ you made an agreement with the president…. But now rip that one up.. we want you to make a better deal in our favour with the president!”

But the kicker is… they can’t decide between themselves what a better deal actually is… less federal spending ( they may have had a more balanced budget if trump hadn’t given himself and his pals a huge tax cut… but that’s another story)

"That kind of reminds me of NI and their parliament being unable to function because of Unionist politicians refusing to play the game.

Do Republicans see it as just a financial issue about Ukraine? I also wonder if the Hunter Biden stories have made it acceptable to them to now dump Ukraine? It’s hard to fathom where this goes from here but I am pretty sure it won’t be good for Europe or Africa if Russia win this thing 55% of American voters don't want any more funding going to Ukraine.

The US has large Military budget and a huge Military complex. This military complex has a huge political power and employs a lot of people.

What would the point of continuing it, if you want to withdraw from the world stage. Would it allow itself to be shrunk..? we can still sell our military tech. Poland just invested a lot into their national defense by buying American made equipment."

Your Military budget is more than the next 10 biggest spenders combined your going to replace that by selling to other countries.

Unless you are going to sell to Russia and China has well.

"Why?

You will find it is not just other countries politics, it is anyone or anything that does not conform to the the narrow minded amongst us....

We are a nation of curtain twitchers and have some of the worlds most single minded people.

You can spot them a mile off, they blame everything on a government and yet want governments to make all the choices and that is what leads them to criticise other countries governments. "

I prefer my explanation

"Why? "

What fascination?

How many threads on this first page relate to American politics?

The thing is, from my experience of having three businesses in the USA and spending a great deal of time there, many Americans think wholly and solely about domestic issues and have to be “told” about which international issues should be important to them.

In the rest of the world, we talk about domestic politics most of the time, but maintain a healthy sub-interest in what is going on everywhere else. Enough to feel suitably informed, not enough as per your suggestion that it is an obsession.

It's probably because of more and more global US influence. Most entertainment media, movies, TV shows, games, etc... are made with a US audience in mind. As both countries speak English and fascinations over there tend to affect our media more so than other European countries.

It's not because it's down to the media here churning out loads of US news.

Plus the US is a much bigger and more powerful country, so we're obviously more interested in your stuff, than you are of ours.

So quite a few years ago I met some American country musicians playing at a big show in London and a few of them came back to ours after the show. They were from Kentucky and were knowledgeable and interesting about music but they had very little interest in or understanding of the outside world, or anywhere outside of their home state which I found really surprising. It made me wonder whether we expect too much of the US citizens given that the USA is so enormous that many of them won’t get further than the next state in their lifetimes?

They didn’t actually pass a 2024 budget though … they passed a continuing resolution keeping spending at the 2023 level, plus gave disaster relief funding extra money for now

Funding Ukraine's freedom fight is an investment in the future for the USA.

Whilst the Ukrainians die, the USA are selling weapon systems around the world instead of the Russians.

The Russians, who have an ideology and dictatorial Government close to Trump's MAGA plans for 2024, are being weakened so they present less of a threat to the USA.

And, please don't think Ukraine will not have to pay back what they have been given. Remember, the UK finally paid off their WW2 loans in 2006.

I'm sorry but this is nonsense. The US is big. Europe is big. Ask a German about the EU and they'll have a fair understanding, the same goes for Belgium, the Netherlands and central Europe. I wouldn't agree with them about everything but you'd expect them to know. The US is big. The Americans have no excuse. Ultimately, people believe what they want to believe and will vote accordingly. Europe views us like we view the US. Only quite soon, Germany won't look so sensible and ordinary.

Exactly.

And the countries who donate/give aren't doing it through altruism. They are doing it for security against WWIII and economical political advantages such as future trade.

That will be a first lol!

US politics (similar to most countries politics) is corrupt.

I recently saw an interesting speech given by Jennifer Lawrence to some kids.

To get voted into power in the US, you have to raise around 14,ooo dollars A DAY...for 6 YEARS... (around $30M).

Who has that kind of money?

The big Corporations Pharma, Military equipment Manufacturing etc.

So any political votes are influenced by whoever gave them their funding to get into power...and that certainly wasnt Mom and Pop in Hicksville was it?

In fact 90 republicans voted against the continuation resolution even after the Ukraine spending was taken out …. Number of democrats voting against..1

Oh were they? Well that would be a first because we all know how much Congress and the Senate listen to constituents over their donors but hey I’m just a lil ol British person who knows nothing about how US govt works

You know the US is a laughing stock around the world right now, don’t you?

Let’s all pray for the people who were reliant on the bill passing for their paychecks, the poor and all the rest of the shit that now can’t get done because McCarthy can’t say boo to a goose without the goose laughing in his face

What a fucking joke it's in the hands of the Democrats now who control the Senate. The major sticking point was Ukraine. When 55% of the American voters don't want to fund Ukraine the house listened did they not ? It passed

Gaetz has said that he will call on a vote to remove McCarthy this week for making the deal to get the CR bill passed…

It’s republican on republican crime….. "

and it's democrat crime against the house. Pulling a fire alarm before a vote and claiming he thought it opens the door.

On the scale of “1 to keeping the government open and keeping valuable programs going for the poorest and most vulnerable” I’ll take pulling a fire alarm to allegedly “give the democrats a bit more time to read the bill and make sure the clean CR bill was actually a clean CR bill” because apparently no one now trusts Kevin mccarthy… no biggie!!

But heck… if that the best ya got…. And remembering for all your talk of it “all being about Ukraine spending “ … 90 republicans voted against the CR even after the Ukraine spending was taken out…

Like I said…. This one is all on republicans and there cult of crazy!

it's crazy in your opinion. I see republicans taking care of what their constituency wanted. Nothing wrong with brinkmanship. That is what their constituents demanded . So they played their hand.

I don't if you are aware Fabio but Florida is a huge red state. So bowing to other states when you are a elected official representing their wishes is kind of stupid. That official was put there for a purpose.

Please tell me, What are the republicans doing for their constituency? I would love to know.

They were elected to pass laws and run the government. They seem to be totally fixated on Hunter Biden's laptop and whenever any work has to be done they block it.

No, seriously, what are they doing?

They opposed the infrastructure bill and when it took effect and was universally popular said they did it. They opposed the bill to limit the cost of medicine which most of their constituents want.

They are making the USA a laughing stock of the world by stunts like showing revenge porn pictures in Congress and by pursuing the impeachment of Biden, without evidence, because 3 ultra MAGA loud mouths threaten their weak speaker.

Please USA, stop this internal childish bickering and get on with your jobs.

It’s even worse than that… almost every single republican voted against the infrastructure bill… only 13 house republicans did vote for it! but every single one all take credit when infrastructure bill money comes to their districts and goes into their reelection campaigns literature and commercials… it’s a weird thing to fathom!

There are two types of republicans in the house… most I’ll give them credit are actually there to try and govern…. But there are a large subsection of house republicans who are basically there to just blow it up so to speak!

You could well be right about the voters but can't they see that if they destroy their whole government apparatus, and the Constitution, the only ones who will benefit will be America's enemies? And after them will come the dictators who will take power in the power vaccum; they have already laid the foundations for that.

Once in power the Dictator will rapidly take away the freedoms so beloved of all Americans, the same freedoms they will have used to destroy their Democracy.

Not at all, but the nature of effective politics is compromise for the greater good. To work together, accross the isle to acheive progress.

The destructive elements only cause chaos and delay. With a small majority in the House the Republicans are left vulnerable to the extremists in their party. They do not represent the majority of the American people but expect to have it all their own way none the less. That is not Democracy.

Please tell me, What are the republicans doing for their constituency? I would love to know.

They were elected to pass laws and run the government. They seem to be totally fixated on Hunter Biden's laptop and whenever any work has to be done they block it. There was no mention of the laptop in the 71 page bill.

See, they can't even get that right!

But there are a large subsection of house republicans who are basically there to just blow it up so to speak! well some of them in the subsection won votes by landslides in their districts. Guess the voters want the chaos.

So you are saying that people in other states should comply to the wishes of the federal government? That's not a democracy. Love them or hate them their voices are being heard. Otherwise they would have elected someone else. So your are saying comply or else?

Not at all, but the nature of effective politics is compromise for the greater good. To work together, accross the isle to acheive progress.

The destructive elements only cause chaos and delay. With a small majority in the House the Republicans are left vulnerable to the extremists in their party. They do not represent the majority of the American people but expect to have it all their own way none the less. That is not Democracy. "

some people don't thinks it's for the greater good and fight until the end. Certain things are not worth bowing for.

In a democracy the view of the majority is usually followed. Where a minority is holding a gun to the head of the majority that is not true Democracy.

However, I accept that the minority may well believe absolutely that they are fighting for what is right despite being in the minority.

A perfect case in point is where the small minority of zealots in the Republican party overturned Roe vs Wade and subsequently passed, hugely controversial, draconian laws effectivly prohibiting all abortion; whatever the reason. That is a position supported by only a small minority of Americans.

But again… you kept saying that the bowing point/ red line was more spending for Ukraine

So they took out the spending for Ukraine bit… and kept everything else the same as was for the next 45 days….. and 90 republicans still voted against it

So… what is the actual bowing point…. Because the Republican can not decide that between themselves

It amazes me that in a country where politicians fight to ensure madmen are free to gun down school kids, if a child is r@ped, they insist the child has to cary that child to full term.

I guess they do not want to see a reduction in the flow of child targets?

California has a assault weapon ban. The minority against a majority. Same scenario. If people really wanted any legislation to be changed they would vote accordingly in those states. Each state set their own laws they are like their own little countries. They have their own constitutions.

If I disagree with anything in any bill I just call the local congressman office correct? People do it all the time if they want their congressman to disagree even within their own party.

If people really wanted any legislation to be changed they would vote accordingly in those states. Each state set their own laws they are like their own little countries. They have their own constitutions."

My understanding is 64% of Californians want stricter gun control. So it is the will of the people.

"… and it's democrat crime against the house.

But there are a large subsection of house republicans who are basically there to just blow it up so to speak! well some of them in the subsection won votes by landslides in their districts. Guess the voters want the chaos.

That is not Democracy. some people don't thinks it's for the greater good and fight until the end.

That is a position supported by only a small minority of Americans. and yet states are making their own laws outside of everyone's influence to abortion according to what the people's wishes are otherwise what you stated those states would have agreed to your assumptions. Yet you are vehemently wrong .

Wait until election time. Then the Republican attitude towards abortion will come into focus.

It amazes me that in a country where politicians fight to ensure madmen are free to gun down school kids, if a child is r@ped, they insist the child has to cary that child to full term.

But again… you kept saying that the bowing point/ red line was more spending for Ukraine

So they took out the spending for Ukraine bit… and kept everything else the same as was for the next 45 days….. and 90 republicans still voted against it

So… what is the actual bowing point…. Because the Republican can not decide that between themselves If I disagree with anything in any bill I just call the local congressman office correct? People do it all the time if they want their congressman to disagree even within their own party."

So then with a majority of 7.. and it only taking 4 republicans voting against to basically strike down your own side’s budget without it needing some democratic votes… how does anything get done!

You have just perfectly described why the democrats have to play the adults in the room and sign off on the CR or the republicans would have shut the government down for them squabbling between themselves

So the reason Gaetz gave to the motion to vacate was that McCarthy did something “bipartisan” … even if it was just the smallest thing to keep the government infrastructure going

If that is the will of the people in the state then so be it.

That home state should not, however, execute, prosecute, imprison or punish in any way any woman who goes to another state for the procedure.

That home state should also not enact laws that say the taxi driver or friend who took her to the other state should be prosecuted or sued by others. That state should not encroach on her privacy by checking her medical records to see if she was pregnant and not encourage the public to report women who ceased to be pregnant.

Otherwise, for example, California could arrest a Texan who was seen with open carry side arm in San Antonio. Or New York could prosecute a man for speeding at 90mph in Montana during the day.

Keep state laws within state boundaries. Respect peoples freedom.

I agree with on that. It's a dumb law.just like I disagree with California and their assault weapon ban. It's a dumb law. But those people in those states chose those laws and if I go there I have to abide by them.

Some republicans block bills you go crazy because it's in house fighting. Manchin does the same within the democrat party and you are silent about it. Why is that? I laude manchin for not following party lines. But republicans do it you lose your mind.

But there are a large subsection of house republicans who are basically there to just blow it up so to speak! well some of them in the subsection won votes by landslides in their districts. Guess the voters want the chaos.

That is not Democracy. some people don't thinks it's for the greater good and fight until the end. Certain things are not worth bowing for.

People do it all the time if they want their congressman to disagree even within their own party.

So the reason Gaetz gave to the motion to vacate was that McCarthy did something “bipartisan” … even if it was just the smallest thing to keep the government infrastructure going Yea the squad is being the adults. Apparently they don't know what a fire alarm is should he be charged as an insurrectionist for interrupting official procedures? If I had done that at the Capitol during those procedures I would be arrested. Even if I said it was a "Accident".

1 fire alarm incident which delayed proceedings by a whole 15 minutes…. Vs 90 republicans who voted against keeping the government going for the next 45 days at current spending… and extra money for disaster funding

90 republicans thought shutting down the government with all of the consequences and ramifications was a better idea ….

Let that sink in….. Some republicans block bills you go crazy because it's in house fighting. Manchin does the same within the democrat party and you are silent about it. Why is that? I laude manchin for not following party lines. But republicans do it you lose your mind. "

You can Google manchins track record on bills he blocked and the in house fighting. What's the difference?

"… and it's democrat crime against the house.

That is not Democracy. some people don't thinks it's for the greater good and fight until the end. Certain things are not worth bowing for.

That is a position supported by only a small minority of Americans. and yet states are making their own laws outside of everyone's influence to abortion according to what the people's wishes are otherwise what you stated those states would have agreed to your assumptions. Yet you are vehemently wrong .

Wait until election time. Then the Republican attitude towards abortion will come into focus.

It amazes me that in a country where politicians fight to ensure madmen are free to gun down school kids, if a child is r@ped, they insist the child has to cary that child to full term.

I guess they do not want to see a reduction in the flow of child targets? California has a assault weapon ban. The minority against a majority. Same scenario. If people really wanted any legislation to be changed they would vote accordingly in those states. Each state set their own laws they are like their own little countries. They have their own constitutions.

My understanding is 64% of Californians want stricter gun control. So it is the will of the people. and 7 states the majority want abortion illegal in their state. The will of the people.

But those people in those states chose those laws and if I go there I have to abide by them."

We are agreed.

Now we must stop the over zealous fundamentalists from effectively imprisoning every pregnant women in their state.

Oh this is going to be the word salad spin of the century for you to make that leap…..

So how do you get from a to b bearing in mind:

A) the senate only came up with the solution because the house.. actually in the case.. the house republicans could not come up with an agreement between themselves

Or actually… there was an agreement that was agreed on both sides… until the house republicans blew up their own agreement

B) the senate proposal was bipartisan… it passed 72-28

But it won’t…. Because the current 2023 spending levels are set for the next 45 days!!!! Which means whatever debt is in place the interest is still accruing!

And now the house republicans are not going to vote on any potential new leader until next at the earliest next Wednesday . which means that for the 9 days… nothing can get done legislatively!

20% of the budget time extension down the drain… well done!

Where is the money from Ukraine again? Let me look... no where at the moment. Maybe just maybe Europe

should step up and supply more. What is the UK commitment again ? It dwarfs both the EU and ours. Adjust the spending to replace our commitment. That money for Europes security can be better spent here don't you agree? You want to champion Americans views but fail on that aspect. So what is wrong with having separate bills to deal with foreign investments? It is a issue with the congressional majority is it not?

McCarthy got outed because he is a yes man . No spine to tackle other issues the majority in the house wanted. I am perfectly fine with that. Even if it means shutting the government down. It's been useless anyways both sides it doesn't matter if the representative has a D or a R next to their name.

Republicans said it was a concern… McCarthy took it out of the bill… no extra money!!!

The only extra spending was for disaster emergency and relief!

And 90 republicans still voted against it!!!! "

You are correct I'll admit when I am wrong.

"Oh my giddy goodness

Just had to sit down I was laughing so much

Dear Kevin and Matt, the gift that keeps on giving

These people should be in straitjackets in case they hurt themselves I am giddy too it will lead to no bills getting passed. It will save Americans tons of debt.

It is an issue with the congressional majority is it not?

You bring up Ukraine again…

Let just point out to you one more time…

Ukraine spending was NOT part of the continuation resolution bill

Ukraine spending was NOT part of the continuation resolution bill

Ukraine spending was NOT part of the continuation resolution bill

And 90 house republicans still voted against it!!!

Ukraine was a sticking point. It's one of the the things Biden wanted. Politics are at play. I ask again would that money be better invested here or abroad. The same thing goes for any foreign nation. You complain that the Republicans are not doing anything yet you want to send money everywhere else instead of investing in ourselves .What does it mean to be a fiscal conservative again?

My god I am talking to a brick wall….

Ukraine spending was NOT part of the continuing resolution bill

Republicans said it was a concern… McCarthy took it out of the bill… no extra money!!!

The only extra spending was for disaster emergency and relief!

Well done Blu.

Probably off-topic. But didn't want to start a new thread.

Apparently Biden wants to extend the border wall now. New York city Mayor is visiting Mexico to "discourage" immigrants. These are the ones who called Trump a fascist for building the wall?

that and it's right before elections. Is someone trying to get votes? When the last 3 years didn't matter.

I was sorta reading up … it’s basically domestic terrorism because the trump administration basically loosened what could be termed as terrorism to not include right wing organisations such as militias… or white nationalist groups

So the FBI could label the likes of the young boys, and the oath keepers as terrorist organisations, the fear is that for example after January 6th MAGA for example could be considered a terrorist organisation and that would be a stretch….

"I thought we were the 51st state of america that would be Puerto Rico."

Well… technically that would be Washington DC… but we are getting in the s.. it’s probably the primary reason as to why republicans won’t get rid of the filibuster…. Because the next thing the democrats would do in response is to give both Washington DC and Puerto Rico statehood… and the republicans would never sniff controlling the senate ever again

It’s sort of an overspill of a trump policy.. funny thing that!

In the 1st congress under trump…so not the one now or the last one… but the one before that.. so the 17/18 budget… as well as giving him buddies a major tax cut there was also money put in there for border wall spending….

Now… under us law… once money has been designated for a project it cannot be redistributed to other projects without it going through congress

Because the policy was not to build wall it was never used, the Biden administration wanted to get the money reallocated as COVID money spending but failed….

So even though the policy is not to build wall, he actually has the money to do it…

Not saying I am a fan

It's the seat of our government. Why should it be red or blue? It was supposed to be bipartisan. You know people agreeing. Do you understand that concept? People there can still vote according to their beliefs.

"DC was created as the place for the US government. Why should it gain statehood? It's supposed to be bipartisan. "

Because of its population.. here are states that get more representation than Washington DC

Alaska, Vermont, North Dakota, South Dakota, Delaware

Because of population size.. all those places get 3 electoral college vote in the presidential election (so does Washington DC)

But all those states get 2 senate seats and 3 senate house seats….. Washington gets none

You want DC to be a state because it leans left. It's a major city. Like all other major cities they normally do. It's a fact. I prefer it being neutral because it's the seat of our government. People there can still vote. So what is the issue?

This is an argument I love having by the way….

You are penalising people of a city for living in that city… if you didn’t want to give the statehood, at least for the purposes of giving them some federal representation give them the 3 house seats

it's still a federal bastion for a reason. Maybe go look at the constitution . So why make it one side or the other? I am all for the bipartisanship. Clearly some people are not.

why should they get get federal representation? 700000 is a drop in a bucket compared to the rest. If you live in DC you need to understand the repercussions to your voting status. It was created as a non biased non partisan area correct? It signals that we are not red or blue. It signals unity.

So if DC signals blue or red to the rest of the world what would be everyone's assumptions? Keep DC a federal district because of that.
