Whilst browsing a live flight tracking website

Jump to: Newest in thread

By (user no longer on site) OP    36 weeks ago

I discovered a light aeroplane circling around towns, cities, country parks and much more on Saturday, Sunday and today, bank holiday monday.

I wondered "How much pollution is that aeroplane pumping out? Surely it can't be good for the environment?"

I thought about reporting the aeroplane to the environment agency.

Then I searched the interweb for more info, searching on the plane flight number and registration.

Turns out it is likely carrying out surveys for.......

aerial surveying and environmental monitoring, including LIDAR mapping for flood risk assessment and capturing high-resolution photography. They also support a methane emissions monitoring project using aircraft and employ drones for tackling waste crime.

Likely, but not certain, but likely, working for the Environment Agency.

Can't make it up

That sounds fair enough. Opposing it is a bit (not a lot) like saying police shouldn't carry firearms to tackle gun crime.

I'm curious to know what you would have reported the plane for, and what you would expected the outcome to be.

I live below flightpaths for Liverpool airport, close to North Wales and close to Broughton Airbus factory.

I am a "curious" person, but if you wish, you might call me a "nosey parker". I often look at flight tracking sites to find out just what aeroplane it is that I can hear above my house.

~I don't routinely make complaints etc, but I do find it somewhat strange that the environment agency employ aeroplanes to keep a check on the quality of our environment.

Hope That Helps.

ps, if anybody knows what the Cavok Antonov which regularly passes over my house on it's way from Belfast to various places, is up to, please advise. !!

The environment agency has responsibility for all kinds of environmental concerns and issues. Not just climate change.

It's an AN12, so as Antonov go, it's not huge. However, it's big enough and with 4 noisy engines, even when it's very high up, it is obvious.

Regularly (several times per week) leaves Belfast.

I never mentioned climate change.

Aeroplanes pumping out similar emissions which cars and lorries and buses and ferries and narrow boats and ships pump out, into the atmosphere can't be healthy? Can it?

Erm. No they aren't. But they are essential for their work.

And apologies, I thought the emissions remark was with climate change in mind.

Do you kinda need light aircraft anyway to train up new pilots….

You use flight tracker…. My nerdy activity at the moment is learning to be a virtual air traffic controller… its something that fascinates me so i thought why not

Mwaaaahhhh. So you're the guy who get's to call airline pilots "Hey, fat ass, get off the runway" with an Americain drawl.

Oh, and by the way, if you reckon I'm gonna say "You're just jealous coz you not flying a 3 80" Then neither am I!

I just live under the Beluga XL flight path (sometimes).

Hope that helps!

Nah, climate change doesn't exist.

Of course it fekkin exists. It's what makes the world go round.

Without climate change there would never have been an Ice Age.

Oh, and without CO2, there would be no fire extinguishers or fizzy drinks.

Not to mention photosynthesis.

Okay, what?

You're taking the piss or you don't understand climate change in the context of the acceleration caused by human activity?

CAVOK, which means Cloud And Visibility OK, have more than one AN12 and quite often they go into Birmingham. The good thing is that they nearly all go very the top of me, including the Belfast Liege route.

Unmistakeable sound but not quite as good as the AN26 (See LZ-ABR with the shark's teeth painted under the nose) Haven't heard one of those for a while.

Also I miss the Lockheed Electras plying freight daily between Coventry and Jersey.

I saw the last one out of EGJJ one evening without knowing it was the final flight.

They went over next day to much tamer modern twins without the noise and smoke trails.

Happy days for us sky watchers and listeners.

Yeah, I agree. I've noticed Liege (but didn't want to publicise it too much)

Thankyou for explaining CAVOK.

It takes the urine that an Ukraine airline flies Russian technology airplanes from Belfast to Liege.

But then again, I have spent several Christmas periods in the company of Russian people.

I'm also quite hooked on Ringway Manchester.

Oh as well as TechMoan.

Hope Thatg Helps.

Bear in mind, also, that they can get the best images on lovely clear days, like today.

Same goes for jobs like Google mapping.

Quite often there are air quality survey planes up at night, especially in winter. Some of them show wide patterns during the small hours.

From the angle of what pollution they themselves throw out, some of them are actually diesel engined, the little Diamond twin engined aircraft popular in those roles.

Rather like you,Fabio, I find myself in the same role.

Goes back a long way with me. My dad was in ATC way back in the 50s and 60s and I would frequently go to the airport with him on the A(for Approach)1 shift first thing in the morning when the newspaper plane was coming in.

Q

Around then we bought an R1392D government receiver which got me into all things VHF and eventually my amateur licence.

Aviation shaped a lot of my life.

I used to work over Heathrow airport so I understand how interesting it can be.

Concorde was still in service back then and anyone who worked or lived near will testify, every morning 11am the earth shook when she took off.

Breathtaking and unbelievably loud.

lol… I have just started learning so I am listening it on ground control… actually not that interested in the takeoff and landing stuff.. that’s proper pressure! lol

Just the bit on the ground and the stuff going through the airspace is what I’d like to do… but they make you learn the up and down stuff!!!

It's better that we do monitor our environment, than the likes of Trump's actions in the USA, pulling the plug on anything seen as having the wrong message . At least if we have the data, we can better understand how we fare and what could be targeted for action if things aren't good.

Thousands of deaths in the UK every year, from pollution and global heating, isn't a good foundation for our well-being :

Looking right now at the Diamond DA62 flying out of Lydd with lots tracks over the straits of Dover.

No prize for guessing that they are looking for outboard motor fumes polluting our cherished territorial waters!

On a similar theme, the strip of M4 motorway next to Heathrow Airport, one of the busiest airports in the world is restricted to 60mph to reduce the pollution levels.

Cannot even imagine having a life, with so little to do, that looking at flight paths of aircraft would be fun!

I can't answer on behalf of the poster you are replying to but it might not seem quite so nerdy to you if, as in my case, a large amount of general aviation traffic daily is visible and audible from my house and garden. Plus a similar sample when I am lounging about at Eureka.

As aviation is in my blood line, it isn't going to go away. Similarly Marine traffic viewable from nearby locations where I often happen to be holds a similar fascination with me. There weren't any trains where I grew up. My teenage spots were caused by sex hormones!

I have no interest in television, movies or YouTube videos, which I find far too demanding of my time and attention. So much so that I neither have a television set or broadband connection.

I often do lots of things at the same time and checking the radar when prompted by external stimuli doesn't cost me much extra brain power and the experience is considerably enhanced when also monitoring the appropriate RT frequencies. You don't have to sit down and face the front to enjoy radio in all its forms, including entertainment, information and communications.

I can put it all aside when other activities are more important. Same goes for Fab forum!

Addiction to the idiots' lantern is an entirely different story and not one for me.

Even typing this reply was interrupted briefly to check out a helicopter manoeuvring over a nearby golf course and just before hitting send a beautiful Global 650 went right over my garden on finals for Biggin!

Everybody's favourite Antonov came past here about 30 minutes ago when I was in between sunbathing and a bit of light gardening.

Belfast to Ostend. Audible unmistakenably in most of the home counties!

Goes to show that home ATC (passive) can be enjoyed whilst doing something else!

"

I understand what you're saying. In a similar theme, I am certainly NOT a plane spotter, or for that matter, a bus, truck, Eddie, ship or train spotter. I just don't understand why anyone would find it fun to compile a list of "whatevers" they have seen. Especially the mundane and ordinary.

However, I do fully understand why some people are interested in the more unusual such as the Antonov I mentioned, the Airbus Beluga, the Chinook, the Osprey. Often marvels of technology and or engineering.

If I wasn't curious about checking out airplane flightpaths, then I would never have seen the Red Arrows, the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and many others flying directly over my home.

However, I can assure you that I certainly don't keep a check on every Ryanair and Easyjet flight which passes over my house.

Even if the noisy buggers wake me up in the early hours of the morning.

Hope that helps.

Oh, and thankyou, you have inspired me to be more productive. I'm sure that if I make a video about how to check out what is flying overhead, then it will do very well on youTube. Thanks for the inspiration!
