Donald Trump's 7-word verdict on ICE using tear gas and smashing car windows

"No I think they haven't gone far enough, because we've been held back by the judges, by the liberal judges that were put in by Biden and by Obama," Trump said.

He has been looking for an excuse or a provocation to use the insurrection act and bring in the troops

The lower level courts have more or less kept the line so far and kept him in check! it’s the Supreme Court that worries me!

I love how Trump supporters throw around ‘TDS’ like it’s some kind of mysterious psychological condition instead of a rational response to the only U.S. president in history who never once had a positive approval rating. Not one week, not one poll. His average approval sat at around 41%, lower than Nixon during Watergate or Bush after Iraq. If pointing that out counts as a syndrome, then apparently math is contagious.

What is a positive rating % ? Also average % smooths out the peaks, and while we are at it, how was Biden's ratings... Using stats is not as easy as LLM will lead you to believe.

"lWhat is a positive rating % ? Also average % smooths out the peaks, and while we are at it, how was Biden's ratings... Using stats is not as easy as LLM will lead you to believe. "

A positive rating just means more people approved of your performance than disapproved — over 50%. Every president since modern polling began has crossed that line at least once. Even Nixon during Watergate, Bush after Iraq, and Carter during the energy crisis had brief moments above water. Trump never did. Not one poll, not one week.

And yes, averages smooth peaks — that’s why they’re used to measure overall trends instead of cherry-picking spikes. If your ‘peaks’ still never pass 50%, that’s not a data problem, it’s a popularity problem.

LLM is letting you down again, it does that when you trust it empirically.

If you ignore the polls that did show Trump over 50% and don't take into account the + - % error rating, you would be bang on the money.

I know nothing about approval ratings, so I thought I would use AI to explain it, and it did not say what you have.

It quite clearly, in an example, demonstrated how someone could have a positive approval rating, with an approval of 40%.

It showed how a positive approval rating is achieved by having a greater approval % than disapproval %.

It doesn’t show any need for achieving over 50%.

I have no idea what disapproval % Trump has but I thought I would just point out that, according to AI, your method of working it out is incorrect.

Trumps disapproval rating is huge if the TDS multiplier is used.

I saw one poll with a TDS multiplier that had Trump at -1000599223% approval rating.

What TheNerdyFemby said was "a positive rating just means more people approved of your performance than disapproved — over 50%."

This is correct as they were talking about the difference between approval and dispproval ratings and not counting the "don't knows".

So you can have a positive net rating even if the approval rate is below 50% because net approval simply subtracts disapproval from approval and ignores the "don't knows".

Anyway, the only people with TDS are those who think Trump is doing well in popularity polling. Trump's net approval is -18%. At the same point in Biden's administration his was -7% and for Obama it was +7%.

Right, so there is more than 1 way to work it out and you just have to choose the one that best suits your needs.

"

The best figure to use is the net approval — the plus-minus rating that shows the difference between approval and disapproval. If it’s positive, more people approve; if it’s negative, more people disapprove.

And as far as I’m aware, that figure has never been positive for Trump. Every other president with recorded polling, even Nixon and Carter at their worst moments, managed at least brief periods above water. Trump’s the only one who never has.

I think Trump's net approval was briefly above water at the beginning of this term but it didn't last long.

Now I’m completely confused, you said above that the person saying it is over 50% was correct.

But approv minus disapproval doe not require over 50% to have a positive approval rating, example 40% approval/ 30% disapproval = +10% approval rating. 🤷🏻‍♂️

"I think Trump's net approval was briefly above water at the beginning of this term but it didn't last long."

That’s right — but only just.

Trump’s approval did scrape into slightly positive territory for a few days as president-elect, before inauguration. Once he was actually sworn in, every major polling average — Gallup, FiveThirtyEight, The Economist/YouGov — dropped him below zero and he’s never been back above water since.

So technically yes, he had a brief bump before taking office, but no sustained positive net approval as president.

That's presumably because you are including the don't knows. But AFAIK everyone calculates net approval as just approve minus disapprove.

When The NerdyFemby was referring to 50% they were correctly referring to 50% of the group approve + disapprove, not the group approve + disapprove + don't know.

Regarding this negative ratings trump has achieved (however it's calculated), is this a record for a presidents first year? The figures for the other presidents that showed at least some positive ratings (even if briefly), is that looking at their first year only or the entirety of their term? I'm thinking that maximum popularity would be at the start but tail off as mistakes are made ( bit like our current government)

I was going by the recent Economist article that had him on +5% on Feb 17th. But as I said it didn't last long so the averaged data probably never shows him in positive territory.

The overriding point is he's probably the most unpopular POTUS in modern history.

It’s across their entire time in office — not just the first year.

Every other president in modern polling history — from Truman through Trump 2 — has had at least one stretch where approval outpaced disapproval, even if only briefly. Trump’s the only one whose net approval stayed negative for his entire presidency, never once crossing into positive territory while in office.

So yes, it’s a record — not just for a first year, but for ever.

So this is where we enter the territory of outliers and the like. A single poll isn’t really data on its own — analysts treat the aggregate as the meaningful measure. Individual polls can swing several points in either direction due to sample bias, timing, or question phrasing.

That +5% moment came from one such outlier. When you look at the aggregated averages — Gallup, FiveThirtyEight, The Economist — Trump never once crossed into positive territory while in office. That’s the figure historians and political analysts use when comparing presidents, because it reflects the overall trend rather than a random spike.

The stated facts hold true for the entire time he’s been in office — including this term. His approval has never crossed into positive territory, not once, across any reputable aggregate. Whether you like him or not, that’s just data, not a timeline error.

I did, however it doesn't change the fact that the information is wrong, but it was the only way I thought the data was confused.

The output being shared is not taking into account all the polls or the % for error.

Trump has been over 50%, but approval of all presidents peaks and drops. It literally is a non story, unless the idea of Trump being unpopular is a huge turn on.

Actually trump has never been over 50%.. even in the election he got 49%

The highest plus minus Trump has ever achieved in an approval poll is 47%…. He usually languishes around the high 30’s or low 40’s

"Are you taking into account the margin for error? I am and giving it in favour.

"

So by your own admission, you’re using a different dataset than every mainstream analyst and aggregator in order to make your case?

Fair enough — I’m glad that works for you.

Across all major polling aggregators (Gallup, FiveThirtyEight, RealClearPolitics, Pew, YouGov, Economist, Reuters/Ipsos, etc.), Trump has never had a single week in office where his net approval rating was positive, even when you include the full margin of error.

A few individual polls — Rasmussen being the usual one — briefly showed him at or just above 50%, but these were statistical outliers and never reflected the aggregate average.

Every serious analyst (including conservative-leaning RealClearPolitics) shows his highest sustained rating hovering around 46–47% approval and disapproval in the low 50s, even when margins are accounted for.

So, yes — even when you’re generous with the numbers, Trump has never crossed into net-positive territory while in office.
