The end for Starmer?
Jump to: Newest in thread
The lead story on BBC News today is "Starmer will fight attempts to replace him, allies say". https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c5y0z2q2g2ro
Is this the beginning of the end for the man that brought in a landslide victory for Labour? |

He’s failed miserably, gangs not smashed, 2.1k arrivals last week. His appointments; Mandelson, Rayner, Siddiq, and the second tax raising budget from faux CV chancellor, all dreadful.
Pensioners, farmers, disabled, attacked. They said they wouldn’t raise taxes now we know different. The 1.5 million new homes won’t be built.
Popularity low, he is wearing dead man’s shoes. As the unbiased bbc have said it will be the budget or the May elections, the knives are out. |

Sooner or later the odds that he will possibly have to step down or be made to do resign from his current role do not seem such a distant possibility anymore , the real question is when really?
Which candidates from the Labour Party would actually be suitable enough to replace him and take charge if he is made to resign?
Will the new leadership be able to bring back the current ruling Labour Party back into a more better standing/favour with the general public regarding some major changes in how they have been operating some off their policies/rules etc?

"The pressure is building ahead of the budget, which is exactly 2 weeks away.
I also think him holding onto Reeves will end up being his downfall."
Budget will be wank and their mp’s furious with manifesto pledges broken. Then the May elections in Scotland and wales, they will be torched. It’s just when, same as it was for May, Truss, Johnson and Sunak |

Earlier this year I said he would be gone by Christmas, I will give him until February at the latest
Can he also take the lunatic Milliband with him, along with Rachel from customer complaints and the clown Lammy |

If Starmer or Reeves goes now, it will cause more market turmoil than waiting for the expected car crash of a budget, and then removing them in response.
The government needs to do what is right for the country, in this case he and Reeves need to stay in post for the short term.

I am really surprised that he has lasted this long. Trouble is that any of the clowns looking to replace him are just as bad. Not just from his own party but across the rest of the political spectrum. I really do despair at what we have to contend with in our current political wannabees. |

The solution is a conviction politician, 1 who has the guts to stand up and be counted, who isn’t afraid of the media and left wing ideology and will stand up for the workers and UK PLC… Only 1 guess allowed who is our next and prime minister in waiting |

The reality is they need to up their game, right now we haven't got an opposition party who are ready to take the helm, which is ironic when we consider Labour had 14 years to ready themselves..
Whether Starmer is liked or not he needs to keep the hard left (as mentioned above) out of the leadership team or we will be in trouble. |

I think the threshold for replacing him by labour themselves is quite high, something in the region of 80 MP's probably just to get a vote but not sure of the actual mechanism. I suspect many of the MP's know come the next GE they are likely to loose their seats if things don't improve a lot. |

If the budget, as currently rumoured increases the rate of income tax by 2p, equivalent to a 10% increase on the basic rate, he will have to endorse that and Reeves who he appointed to raise our taxes. That’s a broken manifesto pledge
Likely that will be the beginning of the end. |

The media will get to re-show all those speeches where Starmer talked about the importance of us being able to trust Labour, and all those clips from a few years ago where he called for a Tory resignation after any sort of failure. |

Talking with some Labour diehards last night, they are firmly of the view that 2TK is safe until May because no challenger will want a May election slaughter on their copy book. There are softer targets for a cull. My betting is on Lisa Nandy who's now been hung out to dry by 2TK over Kogan's appointment. |

I had the opinion that labour could not be trusted on taxes . That it was ingrained in them that they could spend out money in a better way than we could ourselves . I allowed myself to be persuaded that this last election that they were being sincere and there would be no tax rises and they could get spending under control. Of course I was wrong and they are desperate to increase taxes breaking election promises and cannot control spending . No criminal gang has been smashed that has prevented small boat crossings and they can't actually fix the problem. The chancellor will talk about not being afraid to take tough decisions as if we should be impressed . She cannot however take the tough decision to manage expenditure to a level commensurate with current taxation and responsible borrowings. |

The only people to benefit from the tax increases will be unionised work forces of the NHS, but don’t expect to see any benefits from your hard earned cash

I heard a clip from Streeting, he said the BMA were acting like a Cartel and the BMA is no longer a professional voice for doctors.
How they sleep walked into the pay rise overpayment and demands of the BMA as a thank you for not folding to the tories and holding the country to ransom. Now they complain that they are doing the same thing to them, reward bad behaviour....

Reeves is rumoured to be increasing income tax by 2p on the basic rate, where could that lead.
In the 1975-76 tax year the basic rate of income tax was increased to 35% by the then Labour government.
And the top rate of income tax on earned income was 83% (good luck with that Doctors) added to that on the top rate additional “unearned” investment income had 15% more tax taking the rate to 98%.
In the financial year to September 2025, the budget deficit was £71.8 billion, while the public sector deficit (borrowing) was £13.4 billion in September 2025. In April to June 2025, the current account deficit widened to £23.8 billion or 3.2% of GDP. That is a lot to find from tax rises, with reduced economic growth reported since these figures were released.
Reeves first £40bn tax raising budget target pensioners, farmers and the disabled. That figure is likely about to be dwarfed by the second budget.
The current rhetoric from Labour is avoiding engagement with both the public and media on breaking the election manifesto by tax raising policies. That is causing near economic stagnation.
Twelve days to find out. |

Andy Burnham, Emily Thornberry, Dr Miatta Farnbulleh?
Or even worse, Ed Milliband."
Who would replace Starmer really is the issue.
As useless as he is there isn't a big field of potential successors
Rayner may be popular with some of the more left leaning grass roots members but the Brighton flat scandal just won't go away.
Burnham is also quite popular and would be more user friendly than some of the others but he's not even an MP. Finding a "Safe" Labour seat for him won't be easy and if that bye election did happen the media circus would have Farage licking his lips.
Streeting is doing his best to keep his hands clean and would probably get enough support from the parliamentary party. But he comes across as very lightweight in the charisma stakes and would almost certainly be beaten by Milliband in the final members vote.
Which leads us to Milliband himself who I actually think would win if a leadership contest happened today.
Firstly it would lead Britain into uncharted territory.
We've had plenty of mid parliament leadership (PM) changes over the years, not least with the last government, but never has a defeated former party leader made such a comeback. He really would become the ultimate "back door Prime Minister".
Because of the size of the Labour majority he would probably cling on to power for a while but I don't see him going full term. Trying to last 3+ years without his own mandate would be more damaging to Labour than sticking with Starmer.
It's stick or twist while in a full on "rock and hard place" for Labour. |

Looks like they’ve dropped the income tax increase. That should tell you how weak his and Reeves positions have become.
My complaint with them is they’re punishing people for doing what they’re told is the “right” thing to do. They keep telling us that workers don’t save enough for their pensions, then in their next breath, they’re looking to penalise people for saving more money in to their pensions.

Seems like she's back tracking from the income tax rise now.
She keeps popping up with new ideas then when they prove unpopular she ditches them.
It's like a glorified game of Whack a Mole.
Scary thing is that in less than 2 weeks she has to stand in front of the house and deliver, but it looks like she has absolutely no idea what to do. |

Reading rumours of cutting the higher and additional rate thresholds now, killing aspiration.
Masters in economics, with likely plagiarised dissertation, and a fake CV. Far better people around for the chancellors job. As we are seeing she’s inadequate and can’t answer any difficult questions.

Higher rate taxpayers liable for 34.7% (£85 billion of £245 billion total income tax) of total Income Tax liabilities, while additional rate taxpayers liable for another 34.0% (£83.3 billion).
In total, the higher and additional rates account for approximately £168.3 billion a year
So with a U turn reported on basic rate increases, how much more to you put on higher rate taxpayers. (Thresholds already frozen to 2028/29). £71.8bn reported deficit before lower gdp figs announced yesterday. |

Claims of U-turns because today's speculation doesn't match yesterday's speculation might be entertaining for some but it's just noise.
We won't know what's actually in the budget until it happens.
And even then, going by countless previous budgets, it'll take a couple of days for the detail to be fully analysed.

"I am really surprised that he has lasted this long. Trouble is that any of the clowns looking to replace him are just as bad. Not just from his own party but across the rest of the political spectrum. I really do despair at what we have to contend with in our current political wannabees.
The solution is a conviction politician, 1 who has the guts to stand up and be counted, who isn’t afraid of the media and left wing ideology and will stand up for the workers and UK PLC… Only 1 guess allowed who is our next and prime minister in waiting
The lying twisted racist cunt?
Justify your outburst
Not an outburst, a question, and you obviously know who I refer to so I'm obviously not alone in my opinion of him
What has he actually done that’s racist
If you're that interested just Google it like I did
He’s so well known for his racist comments that you had to 🤓🤓google them, I’d best tell my mate the son of windeush parents to cancel his subscription 🤣🤣🤣"
I don't listen to any of the diarrhea that spews from his mouth so of course I had to ask AI if he's a racist cunt 🤷♂️

It's more than just speculation. She was dropping some pretty broad hints earlier in the week that an income tax rise would happen, and now she's saying the opposite.
But I agree that we shouldn't criticise her for things that she hasn't done yet. Let's wait till the budget is actually revealed, and then lay into her. |

It's a fair bit more than just speculation.
She has no idea what to do so she's dropping hints left right and centre to gauge the reaction. Many chancellors have done if before but I've never seen it to this extent.
It's almost a new hint every day. Like I said above. It's like Whack a Mole.
I suppose she could surprise us all and cut welfare spending, cancel foreign aid and knock 5p off income tax.
I'll leave it at that for now. Need to write my letter to Santa. |

£71bn deficit is equivalent to £2629 per household.
Add nato spend pledge, 300,000 council houses, another nhs dr’s pay rise, and plugging the tax gap from yesterdays reduced gdp figures. |

Add to that a full public sector pay round that's on the doorstep. The unions are in a hostile mood. Labour government or not, it isn't going to be pretty.
And still the boats keep coming to shovel a few quid more into her black hole. |

Just like every other Chancellor of the Exchequer, Reeves has maintained that she will not reveal the changes until the budget.
That commentators get worked up speculating based on the nuance of her public pronouncements is nothing new.
Patience is a virtue.
On the other hand it is worthwhile suggesting and debating new policies.
So far all I've heard from the right is that they support old Tory policies without any seeming recognition that these policies led to were we are today.
My own position is that there aren't any magic bullets because if there where then someone would have already tried them. Probably the best outcome is just some minor tinkering to try and stop things getting much worse. Although I'd like to see greater investment in things like education, infrastructure, home insulation and green tech in general, but I don't think these would have immediate or dramatic positive impacts on the economy.
Stabilization in world economics such as an Trump pulling back from the trade war nonsense and the end of various conflicts that affect energy prices and make the world less stable will hopefully eventually lead to better times but these are outside the control of the UK government.

"If he was the best they had to offer it doesn’t say much for the rest, if he goes it will only be another incompetent in his place.
Wes Streeting seems a much more likeable proposition, but non of them will survive whilst they continue to take from those who work, to fund the illegal invasion and the work shy "
Wes Steeting reminds me of someone who has his mum put clean underpants and socks out on his bed each morning.
Is he man who you would want leading a battle from the front or would he burst into tears and ask for his mummy at the first twinge of pain.
Type of face I'd love to slap.

Wes Streeting is a complex character but his main strength is that he appeals to many on the right.
He promotes private involvement in healthcare, possibly because private healthcare companies give him money although maybe they just give him money because he promotes them.
He's overtly Christian.
He's against the right to die.
He's anti-trans.
He plays down the Epstein stuff.
But he has about as much charisma as Starmer.
He's possibly inherited a bit of macho hard man style from his grandad who was an armed robber but I suspect some on the right still find him a bit too camp.
He also looks like a chubby young lad to many older voters but maybe in 20 years time he'd look more like a serious option to them.

I think many on the right here assume that Farage will soon be PM. I'm curious as to who you think will be in his cabinet.
Who do you think will be his chancellor of the exchequer and the secretaries of state for the home office, health, defence, education. transport, justice, foreign affairs, energy, housing, business, science and technology etc?

"Do you think his supporters would be able to think that far ahead ?"
Some of them seem to think there'll be a miraculous vote of no confidence and a general election will be called quite soon. So perhaps they should be thinking about this.
Even if Labour serve the full term, which is the most likely outcome. then Reform supporters still need to be putting some thought into who will do these jobs.
They don't seem to have thought things through. |

You under estimate how far that thinking has developed. I am by no means close to Reform, but it is likely that for example the DTI will be headed up by Anthony Bamford, and that idea had been openly floated by Zia Yusuf.
I also very much doubt that Reform would want an early election. They aren't ready. Next May's local elections offer them the chance to have elected and then blood potential ministers ahead of a GE that is still 3 years away. Should Ant Middleton win the London mayoral election (which I doubt he will), then he'd be a prime candidate for Defence Secretary.
After all, who'd have thought that a failed junior bank complaints handler would make a great Chancellor? |

Yes probably qualifies as strong speculation especially as both the chancellor and PM refused to rule out an income tax rise when questioned on it several times. Surely if they were not strongly considering it they could have simply ruled it out when asked. Of course it's not long since the new deputy PM has taken up her role and she went public quickly to say she was against breaking the manifesto pledge not to raise income tax. Not long after the chancellor backtracks |

My guess would be...
30p Lee as Chancellor of the Exchequer.
Sarah Pochin as Home Secretary.
Richard Tice as Foreign Secretary as he splits his time between Skegness and Dubai.
Danny Kruger as Secretary of State for Defence.
Then we've run out of MPs so Farage would have to appoint people to the House of Lords to fill the other roles.

Rachel Reeves should be sacked - she deliberately lied on her CV to inflate her qualifications to gain promotion to high office to satisfy her pathological ambition and ego. She’s incompetent and unprofessional - she cries at work and plays the victim when held to account. She accepted over £300,000 of freebies and broke the law by lying over a rental license gifting her £6K pcm in rental revenue |

I think Reeves is incompetent but the thing about her CV has been stretched. Most people exaggerates their CV a bit. It's almost standard practice.
But although I don't like her at all, she does have a brain. It's not routine for someone who goes to a comprehensive school to get four grade As at A-level in mathematics, further mathematics, economics and politics and to be the Britsh under 14's girls champion at chess.
I'm not a Labour supporter but some of the attacks on this government seem to lack perspective - as if Starmer is some kind of communist when in reality he is pretty much like John Major.

There you go again, parroting the now debunked lie that Reeves was the UK U14 chess champion. False. She came 26th. You'll be telling us next that she was a BoE economist.
As for dissing Reform's lack of likely Cabinet appointees, you'll struggle to find one of them in Labour who has ever peformed a meaningful day's work in the private sector. |
