I think it's an excellent move. Our younger people, especially, need potential to increase their life skills and prospects. It's probably going to be good for us all, restoring relationships with other countries and contributing to our economy  |

I worked at Southampton University and the amount of Chinese students every year was staggering, they pay 3x what English students pay and they are for more hardworking.
Plus they have to pay a one off fee to do a basic English course before they start the course proper which was approximately 10k.
Around 4-5 thousand students every year.
Plus UK students and other countries.
It has been a license to print money for a long time ££££££
Problem is that things have changed and the international student numbers are dwindling and university income has dropped.
Hence why many are now in financial difficulties. |

The idea that Erasmus opens doors is great in theory but practically very few in the UK have had the skills to make use of it.
Erasmus really requires decent foreign language skills. This historically limited UK student access for places like France, Spain or Italy where courses were taught in the local language.
We just don’t speak the languages and it has got worse as foreign language degrees are actively being cut back all over the place as people are not enrolling in the courses. This applies particularly to European languages. |

I believe it's been extended to students, apprentices, sports coaches and Teacher training. So students, people learning a trade, sports trainers and teachers.

I think he was making a general point about UK universities reliance on overseas students, but you are right Erasmus is an EU scheme. |

Erasers was replaced by the Turing scheme which has helped more students for less money, and has a higher percentage of lower income students. |

I think you are comparing apples to oranges. Turing is one-way only, UK only not reciprocated, Erasmus is two-way UK to EU and EU to UK. Turing is worldwide other than EU, whereas Erasmus is mainly EU and from 2027 EU+UK.
I hope Labour will be sensible enough to keep Turing as there is little overlap. The schemes target different aspirations and in my view young people lost out very badly because of Covid and also Brexit abolishing Freedom of Movement for under 30s. |

Not only that we have a much better standard of Universities with 3 being in the global top ten. Like most things with Europe we contribute much more then we get out of it and are now effectively subsidising EU students. |

Hmmm stop giving pensioners money to pay their winter fuel bills , or pay for teenagers (who have paid nothing into the system ) to have a jolly somewhere in Europe . I know where I want my taxes spent. |
