What’s your top political priorities? What would you prioritise if you were in power.
The current government’s priorities seem to be stopping jury trials, banning social media for kids, creating breakfast clubs, increasing benefits spending and protecting the religion of Islam and its followers over all other religions.
What should the top 5 be in your opinion? Here’s mine
Cut government spending
Sort the immigration crisis
Increase personal tax allowances
Cut taxes to stimulate growth
Remove the recent and planned legislation that kills businesses |

Not in order but my top 5..
1. Youth employment and education - close all low quality Universities, replace with high quality vocational colleges.
2. Adult Care. A realistic long term plan.
3. Immigration and integration reform along the Danish model.
4. Planning reform to remove ridiculous over regulation, and boost housing and infrastructure.
5. A wide ranging reform Bill that repeals much of the post 1997 legislation that shifted power from democratic institutions to the Courts, International bodies and quangos.

"All good points from both
Perhaps your time would be more productive attending council meetings or running for election than complaining on a swingers forum though ?"
This is the Politics Section of the Forum. I don't quite understand why people posting about politics here would be an issue? |

The thread asked for people’s opinions. Only a leftie would think asking peoples opinions is a bad thing.
And as soon as the media found out a politician was on an adult sex site looking for casual sexual partners, I don’t think their political career would last very long. So I won’t waste my time with your suggestions |

You’re entitled to your opinion of course. But may i suggest that if you have an issue with biased media, all biased media should go? I’d actually support that, if only it were possible.
But back to the question, what do you think “supports the masses” as you put it? |

1 - Close all the loop holes that allow millionaires/billionaires and companies to avoid paying all the tax that is due from them.
2 - Change the rules on Universal Credit the 16 hours a week bollocks, so people stop working after they hit the 16 hours to stop their UC from dropping, either extend the hours and reduce their payment or enforce companies to pay more, Free childcare for your first child.
3 - Stop/reduce or pause the immigration, Allowing only a limited number of skilled workers into the country, Home grown first before looking abroad, More training/education for the youth and out of work.
4 - 65 retirement age for everyone who has worked the 35 qualifying years or qualifies through their disability benefits, If you haven't worked at least 15 years you don't receive your reduced benefits until aged 68.
5 - Stop getting involved in every conflict abroad, If they want to be involved, lock the country down from people arriving on boats and have a more robust immigration policy, There priority is for the people in this country who voted them in, Involving us in conflicts/religious wars is putting people in this country in danger.
I've no idea how they would do this by the way, but every MP should sign 12 month rolling contracts, break your contract and you're out |

Without getting into detail on how to do it, I'll save that for the politicians to work out:
- Make housing affordable. Both for buyers and renters
- Reduce inequality, higher taxes on the super rich etc.
- Investing in green energy
- Change how student loans work. Not necessarily by abolishing them outright, but ending the obscene interest, higher threshold to start to pay back etc
- End the fptp system and bring in some kind of proportional representation

1. Restore trust in government. Remove fraud, inefficiency, incompetence in the civil service and restore sovereignty. (you cannot do much without systems that work and are not stymied)
2. Increase the nation's productivity. This includes making people work if they can work, and removing any barriers to productivity. This will be painful and unpopular, but it is not instituting sl@very, but rather understanding what people CAN do and enabling them to do that. If that means the government becoming an employer, then so be it (but this should not be directly managed by the government, if avoidable). That said, private industry will need to pay properly and the UK taxpayer must stop subsidising companies by enabling them to pay unliveable wages. Zombie companies need to fail - this is proper (regulated) capitalism.
3. Build infrastructure. This includes data, transport and housing. A long-term vision should be realised to build the Britain of 2100. This can be done with massive borrowing, since infrastructure projects are investments, not costs (but return on investment must be honestly assessed). Infrastructure should concentrate OUTSIDE of London, we should push productivity around the country. We should do this by also building houses (and other infrastructure) around the country and find ways to incentivise people to move. A quick win would be to build housing and ship those on long-term benefits to those locations. This sounds harsh, but it can effectively pay for itself and build demand for services/etc. in more remote parts of the country. Hard for individuals, good for the country overall. If employed people need to make choices about where to live based upon affordability, then those paid for by the taxpayer can also consider being moved.
4. Sort out healthcare (this makes people more productive, see other NHS thread - will update there)
5. Secure borders. Once we have sovereignty and people are more productive, this should begin to work itself out, since benefits will rely upon work and even asylum seekers will be required to immediately become productive, as directed by the government. Immigration to the UK will be people we want, who have something to contribute and good character/paying into the system will be required for any longer-term residency. We should welcome with open arms those who will make us more productive, and keep out those who would undermine what makes the UK desirable.
6. Education. Greatly incentivise industries we desperately need, and make people pay their own way for relatively useless degrees. Expect fewer people in universities and many more picking up trade skills. Take an honest look at the skills we need as a country looking forward, and incentivise accordingly. |

I agree in principle with the suggestions. However implementation of the plans would be a very difficult task. Just the first point on sorting out the Civil Service would be a nightmare. What metrics of inefficiency are there, what solutions are proposed and how do you remove inbuilt inertia. Short of adopting an almost Stalinist 5 year plan or some other totalitarian solution I can't see an easy way forward. I agree change is desperately needed but seeing it happen us another thing.
Best of luck though and you can have my vote. |

Id like legislation introduced (or properly enforced) which holds utility companies liable for 5 years for amynrepai they make to the public highways.
So they repair trenches properly
They fill in any subsequent potholes
They pay any claims for damage or injuries caused by potholes |

- Encourage entrepreneurship and innovation
- Cut the red tape and idiotic regulations as much as possible
- Control the spending by the welfare state
- Reduce numbers on legal immigration and cut illegal immigration
- Rewrite the public order act, religious hatred act and the communications act to give more power of freedom of speech to the people and double down on people who are actually committing violence |

In no particular order:
Reduce Nic or income tax to give people more of their earnings to make earning more worthwhile and rewarding and encourage economic growth through spending.
Give weight to the idea of saving for retirement . Stop treating those who have saved through pensions as people who need to pay more tax because they are "rich".
Bring back a deterrent aspect for those who cross the channel in small boats to push them towards choosing legal migration and save lives in channel crossings.
Postpone the banning of diesel and petrol car production and continue to reduce emissions and promote sustainable fuels. Recognise the downside of the dash to consuming more electricity which will be a scarce resource in the future and more expensive.
Ring fence car and fuel tax to be spent on road maintenance.
Bring back council house building with directly employed work forces so houses are built cost efficiently.
Make water companies use more of their profits to improve infrastructure and cap increases in water rates

They only have to 'guarantee' them for two years under current rules, so 5 years would be a good idea if properly enforced. |

Indeed, I was quite shocked when I read it. Not sure if the link is allowed but below is the start of the Reuters report 13/02/26:
Stellantis reintroduces 7 diesel models in Europe amid disappointing EV sales

PARIS, Feb 13 (Reuters) - Fiat-to-Jeep owner Stellantis (STLAM.MI), opens new tab is quietly resurrecting diesel versions of at least seven car and passenger van models across Europe as it retreats from electric vehicles, according to a review of dealer websites and company statements to Reuters.
In a previously unreported strategic shift, world No. 4 automaker Stellantis began in late 2025 to reintroduce diesel versions in Europe for models ranging from various passenger vans to the Peugeot 308 and premium DS No. 4 hatchback.

I've only ever felt deeply moved by one political issue, and that's mass immigration. I can't stand it for it's deeply negative impact on society and culture.
So for me, it's making immigration sensible again (strict points based system, a healthy organic pace), mainly to preserve something I recognise to be British culture. |

I would change public service procurement to ensure that no purchases of assets such as vehicles are possible unless they are manufactured in the UK. This will also include Motability cars. I would develop our shipbuilding to allow for replacement of national assets.
I would not allow buildings to remain empty for more than 5 years without compulsory purchase for redevelopment by a UK based (and taxpaying) entity.
I would repay student fees on university education for courses deemed necessary for the economic growth or the medical wellbeing of the country, if the student has spent 10 years working in the UK after qualifying.
I would outlaw allowing kids to exit a car on the (driver's) offside into the flow of traffic.
I would Reform the care system. Understatement, I know, but Boris wasn't the greatest but did at least acknowledge that this needed to be tackled with an extra penny on NI.
I would introduce a form of National Service without being compulsory and not exclusively military....but those who participate would be prioritised for civil service or military roles over those who simply expect to walk into a publically paid job.
I would set up a spaceport on Ascension Island purely to create a cheap alternativeas we alreadyhave much of the technological infrastructure available........it is cheaper in fuel cost to launch rockets from close to the equator.
Finally, I would force my local authority to fill the pothole outside of my home properly as their last 2 attempts have failed. |

Will you be leaving the ECHR when you take power? If not, the "right to private property" might cause some issues with that plan. |

If a place is empty and unused, the owner would be legally bound to either use it or sell it....the right to own the value of that property is not compromised as the value would be given. It wouldn't be a land grab, simply a utilisation and the owner would not be financially compromised.

I can forsee a bunch of investors buying up a lot of abandoned factory buildings, which have almost no value as planning prevents them being used for development. They'll then wait for 5 years and when the government comes to compulsorily purchase them, the investor will argue that the property now has permission for development, so it's worth much more.
I can also see lots of companies starting ECHR cases to challenge the legality of such a compulsory purchase. Even if those cases fail, the properties will stay empty for years while the legal process slowly grinds its way through. |

The claim that Brexit caused the Channel crossings has been discussed and debunked so many times. |

But the people making that claim believe that all Brexiteers are racist, and they find comfort in thinking that the racists are getting punished by more immigrants arriving on these shores. Accepting the truth would take away their ability to gloat, so they just ignore it. |

"I would not allow buildings to remain empty for more than 5 years without compulsory purchase for redevelopment by a UK based (and taxpaying) entity.
Even if those cases fail, the properties will stay empty for years while the legal process slowly grinds its way through."
I can also see a boom in building and allied industries bringing employment and wealth within communities.
I would also promote the sale of such property which was purchased without any attempted development being linked to the purchase price rather than the market rate.
Insofar as ECHR challenges on property ownership, isn't the legal precedent set at personal holding as opposed to corporate holding? |

I can see your thinking. But with successive governments having promoted university education over apprenticeships, we don't have the workforce for much of a boom in building.
"I would also promote the sale of such property which was purchased without any attempted development being linked to the purchase price rather than the market rate."
I'm sure the law would be worded that way, but I'm equally sure that people with deep pockets would bring as many legal challenges as possible.
"Insofar as ECHR challenges on property ownership, isn't the legal precedent set at personal holding as opposed to corporate holding?"
I'm not aware of that. But if it's true, it won't stop companies bringing cases to try to get that changed.
I suppose my real argument here is that there is too much legislation in the area of property valuation and development, and that we need to cull some of it to allow the sort of thing that you are proposing. |

Everyone agrees that voting to leave the EU affected the governments decision to leave the EU.
What you're claiming is that UK citizens voting to leave the EU somehow made lots of people climb aboard small boats. As has been pointed out to you several times, that's not true. |

The poster I responded to wanted to stop the boats , I quite correctly pointed out that he was seeking pre Brexit levels ,, (always think carefully before any vote the consequences of what might happen may not be what you thought would happen)

The levels of small boat arrivals were rising long before Brexit. They started increasing in 2016, just after we had a major crack down on arrivals by lorry, which was previously the favoured method.
Yes the small boat numbers have gone up massively. No, that's not because of Brexit. |

It's been pointed out to you several times that the number of small boat crossings is not related to Brexit.
Explain why you think otherwise. |

Indeed, I was quite shocked when I read it. Not sure if the link is allowed but below is the start of the Reuters report 13/02/26:
Stellantis reintroduces 7 diesel models in Europe amid disappointing EV sales
Diesel cars offer competitive edge over Chinese EV rivals...
It would be interesting if this extends to the UK, as well, given the ratios and upcoming restrictions."
Yes it looks like they will be for the UK as well as Europe. How they will tackle the possible penalties I have no idea. They just say they are reacting to customer demands and need to generate growth |

1. Not a single penny in foreign aid sent abroad
2. No interfering in other counties wars, military only used if there is a serious and legitimate threat to our country
3. Points based system where only those of benefit to the county are let in, benefits only awarded to migrants if loss of employment through no fault of their own after a minimum period of employment
4. Welfare system reforms so claimants are given everything they need to survive without having to handle money
5. Zero tax on overtime income |

Compare the numbers pre and post Brexit ,you may be surprised , unless of course you believe in coincidences |

Correlation is not causation. The fact that a set of numbers appears to line up with a change does not prove that the change caused the numbers.
But ignoring that, the small boat numbers show a steady rise from 2017. That's 3 years before Brexit, and one year after we installed lots of scanning equipment in the ports to detect immigrants arriving by lorry. |

Would zero tax on overtime income include zero tax on zero hours contacts?
Also, what's to stop employers and employees arranging a part time contract to reduce the tax liability.
On the positive side, it would assist in retaining more income and encourage more output. |

I’m not sure hadn’t thought the ins and outs haha, just think people already working full time hours then doing overtime are making a big enough sacrifice (time away from family ect) without having it taxed, more people would probably choose to do extra and people would have more disposable income to spend |
