Historically we had Conservative and Liberal. 100 years or so ago The Lieber party was formed replacing the liberals and along the way the odd extreme party came along such as The National Front and communists, but none made any real impact. On the whole not much changed in politics prior to the turning the millennium.
Now we have 3 big parties on each side and whilst I know the greens have been around a while, the newer the party it seems the more extreme. Rupert Lowe and Restore are clearly more to the right than Reform who are clearly more to the Right of the Conservatives. The Greens being more to the left of Lieber who are more to the left of the Lib Dem’s.
Is this extremism representative of the nations views? Are the two sides moving further apart? It seems based on recent polls, the more centrist a party the less support it gets. Yet Blair’s success was probably because he was more centrist? Same could be said for Cameron? And they are quite recent PM’s.
So if all parties were sitting on 16% in the polls in your constituency (trying to remove tactical voting from the equation) who would you vote for. |
