In new opinion poll, now 2nd to Reform but first among under 50s.

Are the Greens a breath of fresh air in British politics, or same old far left lunatics in new clothes?

Yes I think we are under the jackboot of the last ever labour government.

Unfortunately the party replacing them is even crazier and the far left fascists seem to love it. All they need to do now is work out how they can get all the LGBT members in the same room as the Islamist members without the LGBT lot being murdered.

My suggestion would be to host the meeting on the roof of a tall building

People saying the greens are ‘far left’ - their manifesto could be considered moderate depending on what you’re used to. In Scandinavia it would be considered run of the mill, for example. In the UK or USA it would be considered far-left because the Overton window is so substantially to the right in our society.

I think it will be interesting how many seats the greens take from Labour.

How bad does it have to be for the parliamentary Labour Party to move against Starmer? Cos he’ll never resign.

As as we don’t buy oil from Iran, and it takes 4 weeks for a tanker to get from the gulf to UK. It just an excuse to push the net zero agenda

This nonsense again. Perhaps you’re talking about the Scandinavia where: tax is paid on every penny earned; benefits are limited by timeframe and dependant on contributions; virtually open borders have resulted in gang violence and sexual assaults going through the roof; or half of the country is uninhabitable?

For the uneducated, Scandinavia comprises of 4 separate countries, each with their own challenges and legislation.

As for the Overton Window, you’re looking at that entirely through your own bias.

I’m also waiting for the day that the LGBTQIA2+++ wing of the Greens meets up with the Muslim fanatics side of the party.

Easily are. Not got the baggage of the tradiontal parties and the Ltd company. Tories are only ever mandated in England, Labour has gone right and barked like reform on times, no backbone. Lib dems died when they screwed over the students and Reform are not even a party, just another corporate hell, bleeding the average person of money and rights to feed their masters. Using racism, anti semitism and anything to create a nuisance while they do that.

Scandinavian countries have high tax for everyone, even the lowest earners. They don't peddle the "Tax those rich people" bullshit. It's more like "We are in this together. Everyone must pay the tax". Sweden for example imposes 32% tax on everyone and 52% tax on anyone earning over an equivalent of 52K. So Green party would be laughed out of Sweden for their policies.

Not to mention the fact that the left wing party in Sweden has accepted that opening doors to illegal immigration was a huge mistake and are supportive of reducing immigration. Denmark's left wing party has always been anti immigration for a long time.

So Green party will be considered far left even in the Scandinavian countries.

Greens will need to put the basic rate of income tax up to at least 38% to cover their £160 billion spending plans.

And when that costs 2 or 3 million jobs and all the rich people leave to avoid 75% taxes it will be nearer 50%

"Greens also a overtook reform in Gorton"

Gorton had 75% left wing votes at the general election. How can a 10% swing to the right possibly be classed as “greens overtaking reform?”

Hold on mate, are you trying to suggest that the country as a whole might vote differently to an extreme far left communist area in Greater Manchester?

Surely you know that a left wing party winning a left wing stronghold means all parties to their right are finished and Gary Neville is gonna be the next PM with a 99% vote in favour, and the only ones not voting communist are the people who think they are too right wing.

What was I thinking of ! 🤦‍♂️ The win in Gorton will definitely be a double edges sword for the Greens - on one hand it will energise their natural supporters but it will also expose them to more detailed scrutiny which could be a revelation to those floating votes who still think the party has something to do with the environment.

I think there’s a lot of people on both sides of the political divide who now faced with 3 serious contenders to form a government are unsure who to vote for. Especially if their only real goal is to keep those in the other side of the divide out.

The Greens have some momentum (see what I did there) but they seem to think they are stealing votes from Reform and the Conservatives, when all they are doing is shifting labour voters to their banner. Good for them from a certain point of view, but they have a long long way to go to get even remotely close to winning a general election.

As in Gorton, the national polls show a pretty clear 10% swing from left to right since 2024. Currently, the most likely outcome of the next GE is a Reform majority or Reform/Cons coalition.

Another thing to consider is that the Green win in Gorton and Denton makes them look credible. That means that a lot of middle and right voters who were intending to stick with the Tories are now being faced with the prospect of losing to the Greens. That will energise quite a few of them to abandon the Tories and vote Reform just to make sure that the Greens don't win.

Do 'lefties' scream about it? I don't think anyone finds honest Bob Jentrick crossing over to reform anything other than funny.

Well, they’re definitely not representing people who actually work for a living so the title is more than a tad redundant.

What best summarises middle class ‘socialism’?

What best summarises middle class ‘socialism’?"

A socially progressive, state-interventionist political outlook primarily championed by the professional middle class is a modern definition.

.

To be balanced however, it's challenged (like all outlooks are across the spectrum) by both Left-wing and Right-wing critiques:

.

Right-wing : “It redistributes wealth while protecting middle-class privilege.”

.

Left-wing : "It focuses on cultural issues while neglecting working-class economics.”

.

Both are valid points.

.

As is "“They favour redistribution vertically, but not horizontally.”

.

That's a valid point too.

.

Personally, I am of the class and feel that it does need to self-sacrifice more, in order to have a relevant moral high ground to demonstrably pressure upwards.

.

I "tithe" or contribute to a number of charitable organisations, reducing my monthly outgoings. I just don't make a song and dance about it.

.

Perhaps there is merit in a national organisation that publishes individual donations to charities, where it's easy to see what someone donated. Perhaps we've kept this too quiet and coy for too long. Economists sometimes call this “competitive altruism.”

.

If someone publicly advocates helping others, their charitable contribution could be visible alongside that advocacy.

.

That could reduce what critics often call performative politics.

.

Victorian philanthropy was very publicly documented. This modern emphasis on private charity is actually relatively recent.

.

It would transform generosity from a private virtue into a measurable public signal.
