Donald Trump says it would be "very bad for the future of Nato" if allies don't help secure the Strait of Hormuz - a critical waterway for global oil shipping

No disguising or misinterpreting this threat

With the Baltics next in line for Russia what should nato members do next?

Sending assets to the other side of the globe isn't good strategy especially when what Trump is trying to bully the alliance into doing isn't what Nato was set up for..

Putin at this point is too weak militarily to invade other baltic states which would trigger article 5..

Plus domestically theres a difference between a 'special operation' and what's required for an all out war on a much bigger scale..

By the time he is Nato countries need to be ready to stand up and face him..

Ignore Trump, because he’s simply trying to escape the hole he’s dug with Netanyahu.

He told the UK he doesn’t need our help, the war is won. Ok Donald, we’ll have a brew

It sounds to me like they didn't prepare for the scenario that Iran would not surrender following the shock and awe tactics and weren't prepared for the scenario of Iran blocking the Strait

Now they want somebody else to do the dangerous job of esc@rting ships though - the war is already unpopular in America and I guess the potential loss of US navy personnel would undermine Trumps presidency?

NATO is a "defensive alliance".

USA and Israel started an illegal war.

A war that Trump said "had already been won"...

NATO should not get involved!

You think there was really any preparation for scenarios… remember on day two Rubio said the US went in because Israel were going to do it anyway.. and they would get blamed so it was a “preemptive defensive first strike”

So it wasn’t Iran that wagged the dog… it was Israel!

Because at no point were Israel thinking of the consequences…. They just played up the fact the us would get dragged in

Typical Mango Maniac. Rather than try a diplomatic route the imbecile immediately lurches to the only tactic he knows- bullying.

For a war that has already been won, despite destroying the nuclear threat (at least twice), not needing the UK to join in the war which has already been won and having the biggest, bestest and most beautiful military in the world ever and ever the idiot thinks that threatening retribution on Allies if they don't go along with his hair brained plans is a winning strategy.

It is painfully obvious now that Trumps original plan has turned out badly and that he has no exit strategy. Trying to drag everyone else into the chaos is his only alternative. Gutting the Pentagon of career planners and politically independent senior staff and replacing them with MAGA supporters and yes men has come back to bite him hard.

Trump proves that he is still at heart a failed dodgy estate agent rather than Presidential material. I feel sorry for the US like I never thought I would.

What does the USA get out of NATO?

As far as I see, especially since the end of the Cold War, it’s been used as a tool of American hegemony over Western Europe as well as a pointy stick to wind the Russians up with.

So from their POV, money well spent I reckon.

Compare the military and intelligence budgets for the US and UK and you can see the two way traffic is hardly equal. And wasn't it our intelligence services who manufactured the 45mins claim that bolstered the invasion of Iraq ?

If there is any intelligence service in the world you want to align with its Israel Who are streets ahead, but Starmer blew that connection by recognising the Hamas Homeland.

As almost all the traffic using the Strait goes to Asian countries not involved in attacking Iran then presumably the scare stories about Iran closing it can be safely ignored.

“Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has said that the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz remains operational for international shipping, but vessels linked to the United States and Israel are not permitted to pass through the waterway”

The Iranians declaring it open to most and vessels choosing to actually transit through it given the current situation are two different things. Traffic is definitely substantially down on pre conflict levels.

So Iran is presumably lying and presents a real threat to ships from countries not allied to Israel or the US. Sounds like a major unilatera expansion of this war by Iran which I'm sure the international community will want to respond to.

Trump is such a one dimensional player. The only tactic he knows is to bully an opponent. When that fails he sulks and then caves in - TACO Trump.

He started the war at the behest of Israel. Let them sort it out.

Despite the war already being won (according to Trump) he can't seem to find a way out. The fallout from this madcap adventure will blight the Gulf and the US for the next 30 years.

We are best way out of it.

Quite agree. For years NATO has told the world (and their enemies) that they are a "Defensive Alliance".

To go on the offense would be hypocritical. They are not an "army" to command in the conventional sense and mop up other's misadventures.

.

Although that said, when RAF Cyprus was attacked I did wonder if that was going to trigger Article 5.
