Fridges are more economical to leave ON, instead of turning off every night.
This is because fridges are efficient at holding a temperature.
If you turn off the bottle fridge and everything warms up over night, the compressor has to work harder to pull everything back down to 2-5 deg C.
That's called a "recovery phase" and it uses more energy than just ticking over all night.

Now a fridge full of cold bottles is even better because each bottle is a "cold battery" and adds to the ambient temp inside the fridge. Thus less work for the compressor to do overnight.

The only you'd want to turn it off is if the fridge is completely empty, or you are going to be closed for several days. |

I'm ignoring the trial for the reasons I stated, it is a tool that is backed by the government, for it to be adopted it needed to prove a benefit just like the miles per gallon..
The title should have said "warmer".

If he asks me I'll probably say drill the north sea so that in a generation or so we can 'insulate' ourselves from the 'shocks' and pitfalls of our reliance on foreign energy..

Why not push for commercial product change that would require manufacturers to provide functionality that brings fridges up a couple of degrees during the evening, or a specified time, as long as the fridge remained at a safe temp.
My fridge will go as low 1 and up to 6. If I have this set at 3, there is no reason during the night it couldn't switch to 6, and revert back to 3 at time of choosing.

I'm on building sites regularly I've asked site mangers why no solar and heat pumps all say same it would effect there profits they usually work on a 300 to 400 % margin that tells me all I need to know.

As long as the manufacturers design data advises this is how the fridge should be used most efficiently then why not. But I think pubs will be replacing a lot of broken fridges.
I wonder if the Government is leading by example turning off the fridges, lowering the room heating temp etc in the civil service hospitality areas, members accommodation.... likewise make them pay for their fuel costs to get to work (not work travel) and see how the react to fuel prices. |

That's the wrong way round. We have plenty of spare energy during the night because most workplaces close, but we're always short of capacity during the day when all the factories are working. A better option would be to let the fridge warm up a bit during the day, when most people are out at work, and then cool down again after office hours. |

It was an on the fly idea, but I have looked into the tech that is available and it exists today but on a commercial footing, beer fridges etc.
So Miliband is pushing a tool to manually manage fridges in commercial premises that might already have the tech to do that today.
Going back to my original point of having tech in all fridges and while we are at it all appliances that draw energy, be more "smart" at a consumer level surely is a no brainer?
