Can someone please explain what this special relationship with the USA is ? For most of my 64 years all I can remember is them taking the piss more and more and even on what fart has just said and for FFS the king and Queen are still planning a state visit there. |

Sadly Britain and Europe are just bit part players and observers on the world stage if that.
The US needs to leave NATO and withdraw all its troops from Europe. It doesn’t need Europe and Europe is behaving like it doesn’t need the US. So be it.
Time for Europe to step up. Let’s see how that goes. |

Trump has played a blinder the only countries to gain out of it is the USA and Russia getting extra money for there oil and now he's pretty much admitted it saying come and buy oil we have lots what a great long game plan |

The Gulf countries have been talking a lot to Zelensky and buying Ukrainian drones and anti missile systems. Even though his country has been involved in an existential war for years they are miles ahead of Britain and most of Europe in military investment and technology. Only Poland comes close although to be fair Germany is trying to catch up. Britain under Starmer is an embarrassment and no-one can now see us as a reliable or capable ally.
Maybe the other poster is right, presenting our arse to the mass murderering dictators of Russia and China is probably our only security option now the US is cutting us off. |

AI Superpower? Maybe The US power grid is barely able to cope with current AI computing demand, let alone projected. One of the few things Trump has done right is to prevent the Tech Bros passing on the cost of upgrading it onto the US taxpayer - so they are already relocating to colder Nordic countries for their data centers.
Energy independence? If that were true, then the US would not be importing oil from Canada, Mexico and the Middle East.
Best Universities? Debatable - and only if you have a spare $80k a year to fund it.
Space Programs? Honestly who gives a fuck?
The brutal truth is that the US can only flourish if it has alliances which allow its partners to also flourish - but Fat Donnie can never accept any Win / Win. His "deals" always need to crush and humiliate the other party - and the rest of the world is now wise to his schtick. |

Whatever happens to Trump the war in Iran is likely to strengthen the US long term. As an oil producer they will benefit financially from price rises while strategically the Gulf countries will move closer to the US and buy even more US kit. And it's a sad truth that war always encourages innovation in military production and tech which the US is a leader in. |

Or Germany or France to be fair. The US share of global gdp has been steady for at least 60 years while the EUs has almost halved since the 80s. Its true of course that China is a rising power but mostly at the expense of Europe, not the US.

That makes no sense. You've literally suggested above that the UK should ally with Russia and China, Iran's two main allies, so its logical you would want closer relations with Iran too. Indeed if the UK was closer to China and Russia this would happen of its own accord.

Trump utterly disrespected our military and those men and women who gave their lives in support of the US in Iraq and Afghanistan. More broadly he publicly insults our country. We are a sovereign ( remember how important that word was during the Brexit years) nation and we have every right to make decisions based on our own national interest. Even Farage, who has lived up Trump’s ass for the past 10 years, is distancing himself from him. With Trump there is no long game. He is an old, mentally unhinged man and we are all going to pay the price, one way or another, for his actions. China so far is the only country that has put Trump back in his box. Remember the tariffs he threatened to impose on China, escalating to 145%. China responded with an export embargo on rare earths that threatened to bring US manufacturing to a halt. The Trump Administration fell uncharacteristically silent. Like all bullies, Trump has some awareness of who to pick a fight with and who not to. |

He’s made it clear his priorities lie not in Europe but in the western hemisphere, Venezuela, Greenland, Cuba etc
If he is out of NATO, then his 80,000+ troops (50+ bases) are out of Europe.
He’ll probably be handing over the future to China. A multi polar world awaits, despite all the kicking & screaming coming out of the US at the moment trying to maintain their position as global hegemon.
Probably time to get closer to our European neighbours again.

There is zero chance he would get enough support to actually do it!

Things like paying $3000 for an ER visit (even if you have insurance), car insurance at $400 a month, nursery fees of $2000 a month and a bag of stuff from a corner shop that you'd pay £20 for here costing the thick end of $100 tends to take the shine off after a while. |

Tulsi Gabbard has been less than vocal in her support so could go, I think Hegseth will stay for now but Dan Caine could take the fall..
