I'm a big fan of Mythology, I've read the Iliad and Odyssey by Homer (or their translation) and I see Christopher Nolan making a new historical epic movie and thought this was going to be amazing!
And then the DEI and Woke bullshit all came out
Where to start with this garbage?
And before your nose ring starts to tingle in rage, I'm not opposed to being inclusive, but rewriting historical events to fit an narrative is where I draw the line.
Same for the Cleopatra rewrite a few years ago.
Comment your favourite absurdity
And yes, if I don't agree with it then don't watch it and that's exactly what Al do. Al go watch Troy for the 900th time

I understand that this issue stems from the Academy as they are forcing anyone trying to get an oscar, they have a set of rules to get the 'A Standard' of film which must include XXX and your story must cover areas to support our narrative we want to put.
How about people just make good movies?
You want to do a movie around a minority group? Go make a good story about said group and then make a movie about it |

Contradictory to what you might think
I'm not actually opposed to Elliott page playing Achilles
Yes, it's ridiculous casting of one of Greeks mightiest warriors but the mythology is that he was almost invincible after his mother dipped him in the river Styx (except for where she held him, his heel) so I genuinely doesn't matter how big or muscular they where, no one could lay a finger on them which is why they (nearly) always won the fight
But yes, reading Homers description of Achilles, Elliott page wouldn't have been a contender considering Nolan is all about historical accuracy |

Totally agree. The following don't just need to be anatomically correct, but historically accurate as well:
The Cyclopes, sirens, Laestrygonians, Scylla and Charybdis.
None of this historically inaccurate wokeism, please! |

"Curious which part of it was historically inaccurate? "
Lets see... Where to start?
The most obvious is the new Helen of Troy who homer described as "white armed" so although Lupita is very pretty, she's not very White armed
Then there is Achilles - "towering l, blonde Demigod - so not a 5"1 short brown hair bloke
Odysseus some is played by Tom Holland a 29 year old man, so we not have any teenage actors anymore?
Not orchestra but we have synthesisers
Full plate steel armour in the bronze age
Not to mention this based off is Homer's original writing
Do you think when running into battle the BEST Homer could think of is
"Let's go"
What are we doing here? |

Hahaha ok, so if something is written down in a fictional sense and his clear descriptors we just don't need to apply those descriptors going forward?
Hell, what not case sirens as a walking Roland D6 synthesizer
Or the Cyclops as a paraplegic with and electric wheelchair
Or maybe a Vegan Scylla lol |

I don't see any of this to be related to wokeism. Don't get me wrong. I do think that Hollywood does certain stupid things in the name if my DEI. But I have seen Nolan rarely make that mistake.
I saw the trailer in IMAX and thought it was very well done. I would be more worried if it's based on real events. End of the day, this is an adaptation of a fiction. So I will wait till the movie comes out to see if these changes have any negative/positive impact on the movie. |

Then I don't think this conversation is for you. If you don't what woke is, and can't see how this is clearly another example of progressive ideology being pushed onto the mainstream, then I can't help you |

I know what woke is and I have been critical of it in the political section to the point I have been called far right by many on here
But there is a difference between casting someone just for the sake of DEI and casting someone because the director thinks they could do a good job for that role. The former is woke but the latter isn't.
If it's a movie based on real events, then I would have agreed with you already. But in this case, it is hard to say what if this is a DEI choice unless we have actually seen the movie. So I will reserve my judgement until the movie comes out. |

The problem is that when every story and cast has to have diversity shoehorned in every storyline merges into one and they are quite dull and predictable.
I think “doing diversity” by making specific programmes about particular communities (Top Boy, Snowfall etc) works much better than treating minorities like some sort of product placement where every drama has to have a black one, Hispanic one, gay one etc (though very rarely a Chinese one oddly) and everywhere ends up looking and sounding like London.
Ultimately people want to be entertained when they turn on the tv, not get some sort of political lecture. |

The Hispanic one is always Pedro Pascal if it's for an important role. If it's for a side role, it's always Michael Peña |

Chinese and Russians are usually chosen to play the bad guy roles.
Interestingly, there is a trend in Hollywood where they would never cast a black actor as a bad guy if the protagonist is white. Some POC actors have said in interviews that it actually affects their chances to play even morally grey characters. But No! A bunch of rich "progressives" have decided that you black people should be banned from playing such roles.
Like how TFL banned an ad because it showed a black guy harassing a woman, practically banning black actors from playing some roles:

All in the name of protecting black people |

Except in this one it's John Leguizamo (and actor I actually like)
Who said something like
Mexican actors should play Mexican roles
While he take up the role of a Greek, looking pasty AF
What a way to stick to your morals but I suppose you got to get paid, John Wick 5 isn't coming around now is it
