I don't know, I read the online version plus other news outlets to get a balanced view. The Independent didn't publish until 11.46.

The question is - is the number lower because fewer people are arriving, or is it lower because of all those millionaires leaving?

Apparently 93,525 of that figure are people that claimed asylum in the UK in the year to March 2026

I think it's a combination of policy changes implemented by Tories and Labour. Student visas went down because Tories said that they can't bring in dependants. Labour outright cancelled care worker visas, which was the most abused category.

If Labour manages to pass Shabana Mahmood's proposed reforms, it should bring down the numbers drastically. It's yet to be seen if the Labour backbenchers will allow it.

Having said that, it reduces the legal immigration numbers. But not sure if it will have any effect on illegal immigration.

989 illegals in last four days.

Rumoured ISA tax should cover the hotel bills.

It is interesting to see the level of emigration and the profile of those leaving the country.

"It is interesting to see the level of emigration and the profile of those leaving the country."

If you can tell us where to find that information, I'm sure we'd all be interested in seeing it.

Net migration data shows that hundreds of thousands of people leave the UK annually, driven largely by young professionals seeking better career opportunities and a lower cost of living, alongside wealthy individuals relocating for tax purposes. (ONS).

According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), a large portion of those emigrating are young adults (typically under 35) facing the high cost of living and a competitive job market in the UK.

Common destinations for this group include:

Australia: Long a top choice, it consistently attracts young British emigrants for better weather, higher wages, and lifestyle changes.

The UAE (Dubai): Attracts many young professionals due to its tax-free income and growing job sectors.

EU Countries (e.g., Spain and Italy): Popular for both remote workers and retirees.
