He appeals and promotes himself to a certain percentage of people in the country who fail to recognise that the hatred driving their behaviour is no different from the groups or people they go up against.
His News Night interview was a car crash and showed him to be exactly who he is.

He met my threshold for being exposed as someone who can't take personal responsibility under any circumstance and reverting to whataboutery to dilute his own actions.
I was relatively neutral, but my opinion was changing due to some of his comments, however after this episode I wouldn't give him the time of day. Hopefully that feeling is echoed across the country, I don't want him anywhere near decision making in this country. |

His behaviour is just what you will expect from an extremist fringe politician. There was an economist article about him being terminally online and liking others' posts on blue sky abusing journalists who criticised him. So this is not really surprising.
As for the police action, the legal framework around free speech in this country is vague as fuck, thanks to Tony Blair. Until that gets fixed, we will keep seeing different cases treated with different thresholds for criminality as it ends up being determined by the subjective opinion of police. |

The justice system is vastly overloaded and very expensive. Reform have been incredibly active in trying to deflect attention away from their behaviour and funding, that they don't want fuller investigations and attention put on, to a far greater extent than this, so perhaps other parties are being guided by them? |

Did he say that the national debt belonged to the people and therefore the people could write it off....without considering that the debt consisted of Government bonds an that such action would stifle inward investment along with crippling numerous pension funds and private investments (and we're not just talking about the rich...it's yours and mine when looking at financing markets unless you have no investmentor pension products). The lack of investment would cripple growth of the economy.

Just because people vote one way or another in a referendum or choose to vote for a ‘populist’ party does not make them stupid. It’s more an indicator of how seriously angry and pissed off they are with ‘mainstream’ politicians who continually fail to make any meaningful positive difference to their lives. This feeling of alienation from ‘mainstream’ politics can be traced back, I would argue, to the MP expenses scandal in 2009, the global 2008/09 financial crisis and its subsequent fallout. The EU referendum result was a giant “f**k you” to the establishment. Since then things have gone a bit batshit. How to fix it? I have no idea. But a good place to begin would be to start listening to rather than shouting at each other. |

If it's not chargeable then we have no choice but to accept that. However he was given several chances to apologise in the BBC interview and declined. Why couldn't he bring himself to simply say sorry for any distress caused. The fact he did not deliberately do this (according to him) should not prevent him from apologising. In the wake of the Ann Widdecombe murdering would have hoped for far more care and if things do go wrong, an apology. |

Totally agree. He should have apologised. These are volatile times. Two MPs and one former MP (but still politically active woman) murdered in cold blood since 2016. Polanski should have read the room. |

I find grifter a bit harsh. I see him as a chancer with no idea but to just use silly soundbites like a teenager running for pupil council.
Whilst directing everything at the leaders, remember there are the party members behind them. In my mind it shows nobody wants to actually work hard and help the country. Just shout like they are doing a good job, then disappear when they are under pressure.

Spot on. Online political “discussion” “debate” is largely characterised by volatile swarms and high emotions, frenetic cycles of outrage and witch hunts. Each political tribe raging and hurling insults at each other….”traitors”, “betrayal”…….It’s almost impossible to have calm, reasoned, respectful debate. I actually think that the Fab forums are one of the better online spaces to engage in political debate. Less performative outrage on here. That’s my experience so far at least. |

I agree the two cases are fundamentally different. I do think Polanski should apologise for sharing something he says he hadn't properly reviewed which has clearly caused offence to some, and I think it shows a carelessness that indicates he's not ready for public office.
I also think Farage should apologise for his words after the Henry Nowak trial which actually played a part in starting riots, he would say that he didn't incite violence deliberately and maybe he didn't mean to but he should understand that his words have consequences and if he doesn't then he's also not fit for public office. |

I think neither are fit for office. Polanski's only been in politics for about 10 years and only a bigger player for the last couple so he might yet learn, but his actions and reactions have come across to me as a little immature. Farage is a career politician and given his 30 odd years in politics, most as a senior figure in his parties almost certainly knows what he's saying and the consequences of those words, in which case he isn't fit for office. But in the unlikely event he doesn't understand the consequences then he's also not fit for office. |
