It is nothing to do with free speech. It is about The mail having association with the people who leave the comments.

Untrue.
Not that I'm religious but Pope Francis has no doubt that there are limits. Swinging his arm to demonstrate, he made clear that if his friend insulted what was most dear to him - his mother, for example - that friend could expect a punch.
The concept of Free Speech is one thing whereas the bile spouted in the DM feedback is just unpleasant, or if it incites further violence or hatred.
Just think of that woman who suggested putting Jane Austin on a tenner.
