We are constantly told that we are the 5th largest economy in the first world yet an independent well respected health care body claims the NHS is in crisis of humanitarian proportions.

Something needs to be done.

The issue is that since the launch of the NHS in 1948 we have millions more people in the UK, living longer but not always healthier (nearly 1 million with dementia for example) and people now expect a "consumer" style service from our NHS , yeah we need to cut waste, drive efficiency and invest in facilities but the bottom line is we need billions pumped in but when politicians talk about raising taxes we all run a mile ! The other alternative is to incentivise those who CAN / WANT to go private and then focus limited resource on those who cant afford it ..... Raise taxes OR semi privatise .......discuss .....

We need more resources to be put into the service. A three year health tax to raise £1.5b per annum to deal with th immediate problems and a full NHS review of delivery.

If they can do it in Scandinavia then it can be done here

How about a simple land tax that every penny raised goes into the NHS....

I'm also for cutting the military budget.... Completely

Most European countries are also ageing rapidly so why do we not hear that their health services are all collapsing (anyone know or have experience of this?). Perhaps we really do need to look at some alternative funding models - the current solution certainly does not seem to be working and demand is only going to increase further.

No the issue is that since the 80's there has been constant privatisation in the NHS.

First we had cleaning staff. The argument was it was not clinical and would not effect health.

Of course what seemes to happen was private companies did the job for less and made profit and the tories held it up as a triumph.

But the truth is that is not possible. What really happened was cleaning staff were cut, cleaning products used to clean hospitals were reduced or diluted and suddenly bugs that used to be killed by strong bleach were fed weak bleach that they were able to build resistance to and we got superbugs that required specialist NHS deep cleaning teams to constantly battle them! So no real saving there then, but in reality an extra cost, but don't worry privatising hospital cleaning was a success...

And now we can have more, lets make the NHS a market open to the lowest bidder...

Anyone spot the flaw?

Anyone think of a solution?

Anyone wonder why we keep going down the same obviously failed path?

Could it have anything to do with all the money to be made by tories and their backers in privatising the NHS?

Some valid points .... BUT this really is less political and more economic ... Under all the years of LABOUR government with tony blair i seem to have missed all the radical improvements .......?

That's because Tony privatised more than the Tories and why the NHS is levered up with massive debt payments.

Then he funnelled alot of the short term savings into wars all over the place which cost a fucking fortune...

Now we need to build up our armed services even more with new nuclear weapons and new nuclear power stations built by Chinese slave labour coz you know we've got that c02 problem from all these fucking expensive oil wars.. Oh fuck at least we can frack ourselves to an early grave while our water fills our bellies with yet more toxins that the fast food or the findus horse pies didn't quite kill us off fast enough.... But don't worry they'll knock you ten pence of your fuel duty and you'll be like a pig in mud with your cheap tin of Carling laughing your fat ass off at those three idiots smashing cars you'll never afford up..

Hazzah

The scandal at Stafford hospital and many other hospitals happened under a Labour government. It was Blair/Brown who privatised much of the NHS with PFI deals.

"Cut military spending "

As a full Nato member we are committed to spending a set amount each year on defence. I'd cut the foreign aid budget instead. It's ridiculous that we are giving away money to countries with their own space programmes, and for idiotic frivolities like an Ethiopian version of the Spice Girls and corrupt leaders who pocket much of the cash we give through underhand backroom deals.
