Actually what shocked me was the vote count for the new party which is a sort of left/anti globalisation/green/soft brexit party.

They only got like 2% less than le pen and 6% less than the leading guy yet ive hardly heard a word mentioned about them?.

Where they're vote will go, who knows

Stepping down as leader of FN but still running for President. Probably hoping for wider appeal

are you talking about jean luc melachon?

he did really well in the french debates when the people on the left were screaming for a candidate... I kinda described him as the french "bernie sanders"....

irony people if the left has gathered around one candidate rather than 2.... him and socialist candidate benoit hernon... and one had put out as everyone was scream at hernon to do when melachon emerged as the stronger candidate, then likely you'd be seeing a macron vs melachon race today....

Desperation move. She's temporarily stepping aside to run as an independent candidate , but does that mean she'd govern as FNP leader?

She hasnt a hope of winning but this move might get some low information voters to move towards her. In the long term it surely damages her party as she's basically saying that theyre unelectable as members.

Just watching Newsnight on BBC 2 and they were asking french voters on the streets. Some will vote for Macron but many were saying they will abstain and won't vote at all. Despite Fillon (the centre right Conservative) asking his supporters to back Macron, many won't and could now back Marine instead or abstain. I can't see the far left supporters of Menchalon voting for Macron either.

So if the second round turns out to be 52:48 for either candidate, with a 70% turnout, does that mean it should be ruled invalid and a further vote required? What way should the abstainers vote be taken?

How will the views of abstainers be taken into account? How should it be decided they would have voted, if they had actually voted?

But what if it is 55:45, or 60:40? But with only a 70% turnout? Even at 60% voting one way, that's only 42% of the electorate, and way less than that of the French population!

In a way, she's already won. The French have turned their backs on the establishment candidates, and that's shaken up their political elite.

Macron will ultimately win but will he be able to govern?

Macron may not be actually part of the political elite...but he is pro further EU integration. Pro big corporations, pro the status quo. Supported by Hollande... who is loathed by much of the French population.

It could still backfire on him, the more politicos come out supporting him the more likely to alienate the voters.

"Didn't you say she'd win the first round comfortably?...what she didn't win the first round..?.. maybe they should have another vote."

If you look at the UK press, you'd be forgiven thinking she won given the coverage she got. And then with the latest announcement even the OP appears to have thought she was dropping out the race!

Think about what you are saying...

Would you think that there are double the amount of xenophobes, racists and fuckwits in France than have already voted for Le Pen? If there are, why did they not vote for her first time around?

She has stepped away from FN because she knows that she has already attracted all of their voters and now she will try to appear acceptable and not at all like the person who, if voted for President, would in all likelihood Preside over the bloodiest civil unrest since the revolution.

She may attract a few more percentage points, but her centrist opponent will attract much more.

I'm just using (some) remainers' logic about voting requirements that could bring about fundamental change to a political system.

Macron got 23% of the vote, Marine got 21%, Fillon and Menchalon both on around 19%. I'm quite sceptical of the polls now I think this final round will be very close when it comes down to it. Macron is new and has never been seriously tested, Marine has the experience and is a seasoned campaigner. It's a 2 horse race now Marine can aim everything she's got squarely at Macron it'll be interesting to see how he performs under pressure and intense scrutiny.

It is a presidential election. Apples and oranges.

Their system is quite a good idea for how to run a brexit type referendum, don't you think?

Three options on the first round

Option 1 : leave the eu and the single market.

Option 2 : leave the eu but stay in the single market

Option 3 : remain

The two most popular in the first round go through to the second round. That is how pig fucker should have done it.

What we have now is an extreme wing of the Conservative party in collusion with a small number of rich businessmen and non resident non tax paying and overseas media barons, electoral fraudsters and an overseas government manipulating the public down a road they do not want to go.

Most people do not want to leave the single market.

I think you are making up just as much as the other person to be honest. But if you look at the numbers, given that 48% of the people who voted in the referendum voted to stay in the EU and hence the single market, then it would only take a few percent of those who voted to leave the EU to want to stay in the single market to mean 'most people want to stay in the single market'. So based on the likelihood that (and backed by polls since) a number of leave voters wanted to stay in the single market, I'd say that probably more people DO want to stay in the single market, than leave.

What we have now is an extreme wing of the Conservative party in collusion with a small number of rich businessmen and non resident non tax paying and overseas media barons, electoral fraudsters and an overseas government manipulating the public down a road they do not want to go.

Most people do not want to leave the single market. ...you do come out with Bullshit..most people voted to leave lock stock.stop making things up.

-Matt"

Wait a minute!

Several remainers on here whinge about 17.5 Million out of an electorate of 44 Million not being anywhere near 50% of voters, and therefore the vote should not be valid. Now you're saying that if it was 17.5 Million voted to remain, then that is perfectly valid?

Plus, at least one remainer on here whinges that the numbers voting for leave should be more than 50% of the total population of the UK, but only has to have a majority of the people who actually vote for remain to win the day. So, 17Million vote remain for remain to win, but 34Million have to vote leave for leave to win. Now that really is vote rigging!

"So if the second round turns out to be 52:48 for either candidate, with a 70% turnout, does that mean it should be ruled invalid and a further vote required? What way should the abstainers vote be taken?

How will the views of abstainers be taken into account? How should it be decided they would have voted, if they had actually voted?

But what if it is 55:45, or 60:40? But with only a 70% turnout? Even at 60% voting one way, that's only 42% of the electorate, and way less than that of the French population!

It is a presidential election. Apples and oranges.

Their system is quite a good idea for how to run a brexit type referendum, don't you think?

Three options on the first round

No, I wouldn't.

This should be about delivering the 'Will Of The People'. That is what you Brexiters and Mrs May say.

It is doubtful whether any brexit is that. The latest polls have a tie of 44% each on whether Brexit is a good idea or not, with the rest undecided.

Around 25-30% of leave voters do not want a hard brexit.

"I remember you saying a few months ago that le Penn will win easily in France...

She has won, its the top 2 who go through to the last round of voting. She may still win overall in the 2nd round. The 1st round of voting in France is like the FA cup semi finals. Now Marine and Macron are in the FA cup final.

Yes, she did win. Just like Labour won the last general election here.

.

.

.

Oh wait, no sorry.... my mistake... I thought 'win' meant 'come 2nd'.

Labour lost the final round here (we only have one vote). Marine Le Pen and Macron just won the semi finals. The French final is in 2 weeks time.

You seem to have a very short memory. During the referendum all the main parties official position was to remain in the EU (that included the Conservatives). All the tax dodging multi nationals, big business which includes many rich businessmen, the banks, etc also wanted to Remain, the very people you are now slagging off for the most part backed the Remain campaign.

I think you will also find most people do want to leave the single market. People knew exactly what they were voting for in the referendum last year, all the main political leaders on both sides of the referendum campaign said a vote to leave meant leaving the single market. Now the tories will get a thumping majority in this general election on the promise they will leave the single market so it will confirm what people voted for last year in the referendum.

It's also feasible now many people who voted Remain in the referendum because they were scared shitless by the Remain campaigns project fear and predictions of Armaggeddon (which never happened) would vote to Leave now given another chance. Now they can see the Remain campaigns scare tactics were all bullshit and all the predictions of impending doom never happened many more people would vote Leave.

Many political commentators are saying this general election is like a 2nd referendum on Brexit. When Theresa May gets a thumping majority it will confirm the result of the referendum last year that the will of the people Is to leave the EU (according to Theresa May's Brexit plan which includes leaving the single market and the customs union).

Funny isn't it? On here the Tories have been described as corrupt and amoral, Labour as clueless and the Lib/Dems as opportunist chancers. And yet some people call the 17.4 million people who voted against them stupid and wrong .

Some people need to stop and think

Does every thread have to turn into a Brexit one?

Marine's shift towards centre should pick up some votes but its not going to be anywhere close to what she needs.

The polls that were done in France were of a really high standard, despite the fact that this was a close race with 4 serious contenders they got them right. Based on that and the traditionally high standard of french polling, and the massive gap Le Pen has to make up I cant see any way she'll be President.

Dropping the FNP like the radioactive waste most people see it as was just a desperate ploy to try something, anything to move the polls.

Le Pens just showed us that she will do whatever it takes to get power including turning her back on her own father and her party who got her where she is today.
