Earth to Tony Bliar...come in please (or actually...don't)

Split my sides laughing at Tony on Andrew Marr show today.

The man who allowed total free access from all the EU (inc new countries) has now said "things need to change"....we need to clamp down on EU migration. But he says we need to do this while remaining fully in the EU!!

What planet is he on? If it was doable...why didn't he do it when he actually had power? Wasn't this the main thing Cameron spent 14 months trying to get the rest of the EU to agree to prior to calling the referendum? The EU simply won't allow it...not now, not ever...as long as we remain in.

I've never been a fan of Bliar....for many reasons...but why do so called "serious" programmes like Andrew Marr Show even give this washed up, lying, scumbag any air time....? Especially when he is talking abject bollocks....or was it just for the comedy value?

I have no time for Tone, and totally agree he is an unprincipled lying tory douchebag who amongst lies his sold the country the fiction that anything slightly to the left of the official Conservative political position was socialism. In fact I am so anti Tone I do not listen to his opinions any more. But I do give credit where credit is due and without doubt the country would be much better off with him in charge of the Tory party than the load of vainglorious incompetents they have at the moment. At least if Tone were in charge he would have assembled a competent team, because Tone did not need to surround himself with idiots to make himself look good.

Agree....he didn't surround himself with idiots....none were up to the job compared to him the biggest idiot on the block. He did surround himself with sycophants and corruption....not that that sets him apart from most political leaders.

For a short period only...for new entry countries. He chose not to use them....and now we no longer have them....so he is talking absolute bollocks...and still refuses to apologise for creating the "problem" in the first place.

I'd sooner have Joey Essex in charge than Blair...at least he'd do far less damage to our country.

No there were other tools to manage free movement apart from the temporary measures for new countries. Blair, Brown and Cameron decided against using them and May still hasnt used them yet.

Saw Blair's performance on The Andrew Marr show earlier, the poor deluded fool. He clearly still hasn't come to terms with the result of the EU referendum, he really should check himself into a shrink clinic somewhere and get some counselling.

"Were" is the correct word. Blair chose not to use the option. It is an option no longer.... One of the main concessions Cameron tried to get from the EU prior to the referendum was exactly the options Bliar was talking about on Marr. He warned the EU that without the concessions the UK voters may vote out....they wouldn't listen and wouldn't budge. Blair is dreaming if he thinks they will change their minds now.

I remember a Sky reporter at the time asking one of the senior commissioners what would they think if their refusal to budge caused an out vote..... He stuck his fingers in his ears and went Lah lah lay and walked away.

Out of interest, those who oppose the current freedom of movement arrangement, how do you think they currently operate, and what would you change them to?

But he won 3 back to back elections, with big majorities, and left on his own terms. Not many PMs who have done that.

You might not have voted for him (or Labour under his leadership), but a lot of people did.

I did have a glass with him once when he open the new Labour party office here

Lots of reasons besides immigration like the European Court of Justice being Supreme over our own domestic courts, EU laws passed from the European Commission and the European Parliament being supreme over our own domestic laws, the sovereignty of our country and our own Parliament being watered down and taken over by the EU. Unable to make our own trade deals out in the world as member of the EU, these are just a few of the reasons but there were many more. Why then is Blair only focusing in the immigration issue?

Right...so you think one party taking control and making new laws is having sovereignty....and the trade deals are yet to be seen...as all those you mentioned in the past want to finalise trade deals with the EU first.

Because your buddies in UKIP made it about immigration...all lies of course something you accuse Blair of but not them...you are a hypocrite

Not seen the show but applying new solutions to today's issues, rather than clinging to old ones for the sake of it, seems right. Old or new ones may be right or wrong but flexibility of thought and strategy is essential.

The UK should be negotiating to determine an interim and long term relationship that works economically well for it. The clowns who couldn't get a majority of their politicians elected for a government after years of government and the referendum aren't particularly trustworthy to do so - and the population doesn't trust them.

Historical leaders using their experience and voices to influence a government up shit creek is a good thing. ignore or accept th wisdom and position as you want.

We need close involvement with Europe and the quality of the relationship and terms are key to success. No one will accept responsibility for a post brexit mess if it happens - they'll all be long gone, silent and on the boards of businesses that have done pretty nicely.

Not a fan like many of Blair and did not vote Labour during his tenure..

did vote in 97 for Labour..

I think what pisses many Tories off about him and that probably includes some on here who did vote for him to keep him in power is the fact that he took Tory policies like PFI to a new level and in many ways out toried them during that time..

Cameron was more Blair like than Thatcher like..

says much about centrist politics and the ease that people are manipulated..

All this talk about whether Tony Blair was the dog's bollocks or just total bollocks is irrelevant.

The point is is that we don't have to leave the EU in order to better control immigration from Europe. We can do that now, we could do it before and we'll be able to do it in the future, if we choose to, whether in the EU, EEA or EFTA. It's quite simply just another BREXIT lie to say that we couldn't, can't or won't be able to whilst in the EU. Belgium, Luxembourg, Norway and Switzerland all have far stricter controls on gaining permanent residence for EU/EEA/EFTA nationals than the UK does. If they, while being members of the Single Market and/or the Customs Union, can put in place stricter controls on European immigration then clearly it's not being in the EU that has prevented us from doing the same. The reason why European immigration has not been controlled is because no government, either blue, red, pink or magenta, thought it would be a good idea to control it and chose not to.

Free movement of people or labour was never designed to allow citizens of one country to leach of the benefits of another and it's rules never insisted that they should.
