Official Unemployment Figures

Been looking into this and actual estimates are running about 4 times the official figure. So how accurate are other official figures?

Judging by the numbers of people who have enough time on their hands to go to London and protest about stuff, i wouldn't be surprised at all.

I thought this too, though read the tories added extra criteria to be used in th 1980s, so not as independent as i thought

The ONS came in to being from 1996 when 2 departments were merged.

Gordon Brown in 2005 announced they would legislate for the ONS and the statistics it produced to be independent of government.

This was legislated in the Statistics and Registration Service Act of 2007.

how does the 1980s affect the 2019 figures?

The unemployment figure is the claimant count for a particular benefit.

In other words if, for whatever reason, you are unable or unwilling to claim it, yet are not in work, you are not counted.

Unemployment figure is different from the Claimant Count, which measures only those people who are claiming unemployment-related benefits.

The unemployment figure is calculated according to Labour Force Survey which identifies you as being unemployed if:

without a job, have been actively seeking work in the past four weeks and are available to start work in the next two weeks

out of work, have found a job and are waiting to start it in the next two weeks

This is from the ONS:

"The headline unemployment rate is calculated by dividing the unemployment level for those aged 16 and over by the total number of economically active people aged 16 and over. Economically active is defined as those in employment plus those who are unemployed"

It's an internationally agreed figure.

The definition of those in employment is:

"Employment. The number of people in employment in the UK is measured by the Labour Force Survey (LFS) and consists of people aged 16 years and over who did one hour or more of paid work per week and those who had a job that they were temporarily away from (for example, because they were on holiday or off sick)."

So your unemployment rate depends on your employment rate.

The issue is that a significantly higher proportion of the workforce is on low incomes in insecure jobs.

"approximately 80% wanted more hours in their current jobs, 12% wanted replacement jobs with longer hours and 9% wanted additional jobs."

The employment rate is very high even if most want or need more work. This means that the unemployment rate is low.

Such are statistics.

The protests are quite often on a weekend.

People can also take a day off.

Just saying

I guess that’s why an independent body was created, as the figures from previous years were open to manipulation by the government of the day.

To some extent.

The definition is consistent over time and over borders.

It's reasonably consistent but you have to look into the detail of how it's calculated to see how it can become misleading, even if by accident.

Zero hours contracts weren't really a thing when these definitions were created.

Maybe if they put as much effort into acheiving something in their career/ life they would get a sense of self worth and realise things aren't that bad.

Shitload of people on here could do with that too So much negativity

Man tries solving all his problems with optimism

24th July 2019

A MAN inspired by Boris Johnson is to try to solve every problem he faces today with nothing more than sheer optimism.

Nathan Muir has decided that, since optimism can solve trade negotiations, overcome parliamentary opposition and put a man on the moon, it can probably perform similar miracles in everyday life.

He said: “Slept in this morning. I’m still gonna make it to work on time. You know why? Looking on the bright side mate.

“Then, undaunted by my verbal warning for lateness, I beat the recurring problem of low sales by telling everyone it’d be fine. Better than fine. Brilliant.

“After that I had three pints at lunch – who says it impairs my ability to work? Glass half-empty types – I told Rachel in accounts that she should join me and my girlfriend for a threesome, and that she’d love it. Because I really believe she would.

“Technically fired, I made my way home knowing I’ll be welcomed back with a promotion tomorrow, only to find Rachel told my girlfriend. Still, what a marvellous night to sleep on the street with all my things.”

Brexiter Tom Logan said: “Well it’s obvious where he went wrong. Not optimistic enough.”

according to the government's figures, overpayments due to fraud accounted for 1.2% of the overall social security budget last year.

That's about £2.4B

Sounds a lot, but tax fraud costs us much more - VAT fraud for the same year cost us £35B but doesn't seem to get nearly as much media attention.

Thats due to vilification of the disadvantaged, disabled etc. Fits in with tory ideology. The big fraud is likely to be committed by tory doners,

Just because things aren't so bad for some, doesn't mean they aren't for many others. Some people give a shit about that and not just themselves, hence people with "not so bad" lives protesting, to try and make changes so more people's lives are better
