There's more culture in an out of date yoghurt than in all of Paisley.

Oi I live in Paisley (not from Paisley) and why not. It has a proud heritage, some beautiful buildings and is trying at least to improve its image. Support a Scottish town

They need tidy up the high street and the west end. Invest some more money into areas like tannahill crescent which is crumbling and full empty houses.

Although I live here, I'm not originally from here.

Why not. Tannahil is set to be demolished for a sports village. And as for paulo. Hes an artist maybe not your taste but the world would be dull if all had same taste

"Why not. Tannahil is set to be demolished for a sports village. And as for paulo. Hes an artist maybe not your taste but the world would be dull if all had same taste "

They announced a couple of weeks ago that the sports village has been put on hold for unspecified amount of time.

For shops stop shutting down they need stop developing the three out of town centre retail parks. But if you look at other towns like Falkirk etc they're high streets are sorry state too.

Just a sad state the whole place. I agree the centres arent helping but neither is the prices for the actual shop areas that companies must pay for their lease. Extortionate. Thats why they have vanished 1 by 1 also

Think Paisley should have a chance. Lot of changes taking place to make it look a bit more presentable . Sure there are still some areas that need developed but hopefully these will improve in the spin off if they are selected .

Yup, I know someone who had a shop off the high street and was around a grand a month in rent. So that's an empty unit now. Crazy.

Whilst Paisley isn't great, I think what has already been done for city of culture has been great for the town.

It will never be Paris, London, or Berlin but it is making a good job of maximising what it has.

Can't put paisley on a par with those HUGE city's

I been to Berlin and would happily go back.

Great transportation system.

A good bustling city, with much to see and do, hundreds of places to eat etc.

Another proud Paisley buddie here. It will be a big achievement if we did get it but take away the abandoned High Street and soulless town centre and you have a town with a rich history, culture and architecture. Those who ridicule the town have probably never set foot in the place.

If I had my way I'd pull down the Piazza and redevelop the riverside with shops, bars and restaurants but that will never happen.

But you know what I mean.

I mean a "city" surly has a huge variety of shops.

Most of shopping here is now indoor malls like silverburn & braehead. Which most people have blamed for paisley's demise.

It really is handy having a huge selection under one roof, especially on a rainy day.

So yes, I'm from paisley and use both these "malls".

Don't get me wrong. I know Glasgow city centre has many shops on streets like Buchanan st and sauchihall st. Many variaties of shops.

Just they 2 streets alone would put paisley high st to absolute SHAME.

Firstly, I would give Paisley full marks for ambition. If ever a town has been abandoned by the 21st century it's Paisley and I hope this initiative brings renewed hope and regeneration even if it is not a successful bid. Every town and city struggles to compete with Amazon and the big malls and until a new purpose can be found for the town centre it is always going to be tough going.

Come on Paisley! Destiny awaits the courageous.

Hamlets may well apply.

Not 100% sure, not an expert.

Thought the town had to have so many thousands of people living in it first before it even applied for city status.

Ok. Paisley even got to be used as "starting point" to the famous Monte Carlo Classic car rally recently.

Ok paisley, give it a go.

Should have been given it in 1988, it's 500 year anniversary.

Yes, I remember all the memorabilia at school

I couldn't agree more, from the actors, singers, poets etc never mind the Paisley pattern and the old mill...Coats Memorial is the most beautiful church and we even have a Cathedral...but the best thing about Paisley is the people, they always pull together when someone in the community needs it, like the people who lost all their belongings in the fires last year from two different areas of Paisley! There may be bad, like the recent senseless murder but the town always pulls together xxx

I hope it happens as will(hopefully) inject some pride back into the place. A lot of officious gits have tried to say Paisley shouldn't get it as its technically not a city, but the place has some spirit, a proud heritage but has been a bit neglected. Hope it happens for 2021

This is very true.

You'd think you'd HAVE to be a city first before getting city of culture.
