Why is their such a stigma about driving in old cars and certain models?

My son just passed his driving test but won't take my mums Nissan Micra, even though she offered it to him free. He said it's a girl's car and too old! My car is an old banger too and I guess I am just one of those folk who sees a car to get to A from B. What's others thoughts?

What did your son learn to drive in ?

I hope he doesn't the think that he should get a new car supplied to him unless he's working and can afford a new one

My first car was three years old when I got it and I bought second hand cars for a few years till I was able to buy new cars

A Nissan Micra is not a girls car !!

I saw a new Micra the other day and thought very smart indeed

I hope you win through with him and that he realises that the gift is not to be sneezed at. A lovely gesture !!

I saw some really old tractors at a Traction Engine event in Gloucestershire last month. Lots of old cars and buses and even older traction engines. Love em all

I drive a mk2 j reg golf.

Had it for for 15 years. Bought it £2500.

Only thing major that has gone wrong with it was the wheel bearing collapsed.

B didn't even take it to a garage he fixed it at home.

Best car we have ever owned and the parts are stupidly cheap.

There is slot to be said for older cars.

My first car post divorce, was an L reg Micra 1.0. It had almost 100,000 miles on the clock when I bought it, it ran like a dream, and never failed an MOT in the 3 years I had it, and it was still on the road in 2013, when I last saw it, 9 years after I sold it. What a car!

It's a new gen thing.

My first car was a '93 diesel fiesta. Needed to floor the accelerator to get it up to 40mph!

The pimping culture gives cars a stereotype of a boys/girls car.

Also, cars are cheaper and made more affordable by financing. Newer cars are more efficient, less polluting and have more safety....

i guess at that age it's all about street Cred but when you have children it's all about being practical.Isurance for teenagers now is ridiculous !Id be happy at that age not having to wait for a bus! There is also the balaclava option for him too!

I had an old Renault 19 convertible which was great but you had to pull the hood up which was a pain. I bought it on eBay and sold it a few years later. I cycle much of the time when not working and don't.miss a car in the least.

Tell your son that he's a spoilt brat, that he hasn't been taught to appreciate the true value of things, and that you blame the parents...

Some cars have a reputation for being a boy/girl car. The micra (well certainly the one from about 12 years ago) had a girly car reputation. My mate used to drive his parents and got the piss taken out him for it. Teens will be teens.

My first car was a 950cc B reg Nova... didn't matter, as it was MY set of wheels.. give him a clip round the ear and remind him second class motoring is far better than first class walking!!!

I left my ex-wife with a brand new car when we separated and jumped over to the car market and picked up a fire engine red Fiat Panda 997cc for £100 lasted me 3 years without problem and then Mrs Snogalot used it after she passed her test. While I went and got a newer car. Nothing wrong with starting with an old car when you have just passed your test, as others have said it's better then nothing and only slightly better then the public transport these days.
