it all depends on what you looking for, if you want to go out for a late night drink then living in land wont work, if your looking for a quite life in the country then that`s great and a lot cheaper than say living on the coast.

there are some really nice places inland all over Spain and very good value for your money, we moved to Spain 20 years ago and bought a villa in land but then moved to the coast, you really need to spend some time out here travel about and find somewhere that you like.

That is very good advice.

I would even take it step further and say rent somewhere for a year. If not then at least visit a few times and at different times of the year before you buy.

Costa Blanca Spain...

Inland Spain is very different from the coast, some people can hack it and some can't.

A few points to think about.

The first difference is the climate. In the summer it can be as much as 10 deg hotter inland than it is on the coast. I remember a day when we drove from a 32 deg Torrevieja to Murcia city where it was 41 recorded on the same car. On the other side of the coin it can be a lot colder in the winter. Alcoy (not far from Benidorm) quite often gets snow.

Second consideration would be altitude.

Apart from the Vega Baja (roughly between Alicante and Murcia) the whole area is very mountainous. That short drive to the beach can be bloody hard work down a windy mountain road shared with Spanish drivers. Trust me I've done it.

Next would be language.

Once you get inland you will find very little English spoken. Your Spanish would have to be to a decent level to get the best out of it.

Most important is infrastructure and I don't just mean (although important) distance to the supermarket.

Some inland towns and villages can be up to an hour from the nearest hospital. We all hope never to need one but check out how far the nearest one is.

Lastly Almeria or Alicante?

Inland from Almeria city is pretty desolate, it's actually the home of Europe's only true desert. There are some towns and villages but they are very small and few and far between.

Further up the coast there is a little more in the Vera area, but away from the coast it is still a bit thin. Take a close look at google maps (satellite) and you will get the picture.

Also Almeria can be a bit difficult for airports, especially in the winter when Almeria airport pretty much closes to international flights. Both Malaga and Alicante are 2 hours plus and Murcia is still well over an hour, and even that is thin on flights in the winter.

The north Costa Blanca (roughly from Alicante up to Denia/Javea including behind Benidorm) is again very mountainous. A friend of ours rented a place in a small village in the area. After 6 months he'd had enough of driving half an hour (each way) down a twisting country road just to do a bit of shopping. He now lives close to the coast.

If you still want to be inland We would recommend you take a look in the Vega Baja area.

The ground is pretty flat, good infrastructure including bars, restaurants, shops, and most importantly hospitals, a good number of international residents and visitors, close to airports, and good straight roads when you want to get to the beach.

Check out towns/areas such as Rojales, Benijofar, Algorfa, Catral, and Almoradi among others.

Last but far from least, the area has its own British owned swinger club.

Couldn't agree more - we were planning to move over in April and then along the virus - we are still stuck in the UK but have a ferry booked for the 30th June - so soon be over. We visited Spain twice during the winter looking a properties to buy but what you see on-line and in brochures are not always as they seem also there are lot of short-term rentals; would you want to live in that type of area where you have different neighbours every two weeks throwing parties late into the night. The best bit of advice we were given was to rent for a year and look around the various areas (this will give you a chance to see what is what during the quieter winter periods and also the busier summer period)

We are looking at being under an hour inland, to be honest town living would be far too much for us and spending a bit of time getting anywhere is normal for us we live in the outer Hebrides and to go to the nearest asda is 2,1/2 hours on a ferry and an hour drive that's after you've arrived for the ferry an hour before and spent 30 minutes waiting to disembark.

Bloody hell.

In that time you could drive to Benidorm from Madrid.

Seriously though.

Take a good time looking. We know many people who have made very expensive mistakes.

ALICANTE AREA SPAIN

Hi - we managed to escape the British rain and have now moved over to Spain, we have rented a property in Algorfa for one year. In the time we have been here we have purchased a car (we already have our NIE from a previous visit), we have settled in and are enjoying life however it is has been a busy period. Algorfa is split into two parts - the old village and La Finca Golf. There are a mix of Spanish, Belgian, French and all seem to get on very well. There are small towns close by with a real Spanish feel - street markets, roadside cafes and supermarkets. We are not sure if this place is right for us buy by renting it gives us plenty of time to look and see - good luck with whatever you choose.

Algorfa is a good choice to start with.

Pretty central, only 10/15 minutes from the beach and close to quite a few of the other inland towns I mentioned.

Dartford

Take a look at Santa Pola, easy drive to Alicante (Alacant) / Elche (Elx). More of a Spanish feel than the coastal new builds up the road in Gran Alacant. Might be a bit TOO close to the airport.
