It was just another average Wednesday for James. No work, but plenty to do: his laundry, a little work in the garden and some food shopping.

Waitrose had enticed him in with some tasty, well priced offers and tight arse that he was, the reward of a free takeaway coffee and so, trolley in hand, he began to work his way around the store, occasionally cursing under his breath as yet another of his favourite products was absent from the shelves.

James almost blushed. It was strange how just a half smile, admittedly a beautiful one, could have such a euphoric affect on him.

Payment complete, she put her bags into her trolley and left. Was that a little wiggle as she did so, thought James, smiling to himself as he loaded his own shopping.

He often stopped for his post shop coffee, but today, for some reason, he didn't, instead dumping his bags in the boot of his old classic Series 2 Defender and heading out of the car park, arms working hard with the lack of power steering.

Just before the exit, he saw the lady bent over, retrieving vegetables from a split bag.

Stopping, he jumped out and began to help, offering a spare carrier to place the rogue veg in.

"Thank you so much" she said, as he noticed for the first time, quite how beautiful she was.

"First the car, now this! What next!?"

"Let me a least give you a lift" James replied, "it's a Wednesday, my time is my own"

He took her smile and nod as an acceptance and loaded her bags in the Landy before opening the door and banging it shut for her.

"I've never been in one of these" she said, "are they any good?"

James grinned. "They are pigs to drive, with gears difficult to select and you get a work out every time you turn the wheel. But I love them. I'm James, by the way. Where can I take you?"

"It's not too far, James. I'm Elaine" she paused, "and thank you" she said, with the slightest touch of her hand on his arm.

Elaine gave precise instructions for a 5 minute drive from the supermarket, heading west towards the sea at Cobo.

"Left here, please. Just pull in by the house with the blue door".

James drew up outside a smart looking semi in a quiet clos, a large blue SUV was sitting outside, bonnet propped in the air.

"I see the problem car" James began, lifting Elaine's shopping from his Landy as Elaine fumbled with her house keys.

"God, yes!" she replied, "I haven't had time to even look"

The door pushed open and she walked back to collect her shopping.

"It's ok, I've got it" James said, "just show me where to dump it".

"2nd on the right, in the kitchen" Elaine replied.

"Hang on. No!!" her voiced changed to a worried shout, but it was too late, James was already in the kitchen, lifting the bags onto the large central island, next to a pile of rather skimpy underwear, obviously ready for washing.

"Oh God, I'm so embarrased" she started, "I'd forgotten"

"Don't worry" James said, "I didn't see anything".

"Really?" Elaine replied quizingly.

"No nothing" he said, "apart for the sexy underwear!"

Elaine felt as though she must be a fiery shade of crimson as she waved at James making his way back to the Landy.

Sitting in front of his desk top, processing the images from the most recent assignment, James noticed the buzz of the message alert, but carried on editing, as he was close to finishing.

It was later in the afternoon that James' phone buzzed again.

"Hi James. Thanks for your kind offer, but my ex has turned up unexpectedly, so I'm not going to be free. Could I message tomorrow if it's still not working? My children are with my parents then"

"No plans tomorrow apart from bike and coffee early doors. I'm assuming you weren't thinking of a 6 am visit? " he replied, with a smiley emoji.

He then emailed 'The Times'

The following morning, after a windy but exhilarating bike ride, James stepped out of the shower, inspecting the smoothness of freshly shaved cock and balls.

She beat him to it, opening the door just as he reached forward to knock.

"11 o clock, on the dot!" Elaine began, "Ex Forces?"

"Are the keys in the car?"

"Let's see what the problem might be".

A whole host of warning lights came on and the engine turned, but didn't spark into life.

"Could you pop the kettle on Elaine?" he said, "this may take a few minutes"

He cursed quietly at the new engine management systems of modern vehicles, so radically different from the pure mechanics of his Landy, where cause and effect were far more easy to self manage.

Plugging the diagnostic tool in, the fault codes appeared and he looked them up on his phone before delivering the news to Elaine.

"I'm afraid you need a new coil pack" he said.

"I can show you where to order it, or you can phone the Toyota garage and see if they have one"

Elaine looked puzzled.

"A coil what?"

"Pack. Don't worry, I'll call them first thing tomorrow. With luck, they may have one in stock. They don't take long to fit. Any chance of that tea?"

"Course, yes!" Elaine replied. "Is the part expensive?"

"Not terribly. I'll fit it, it's not a big job"

Following Elaine inside, he noted how good she looked in jeans and her plain white T showed off her ample breasts.

"Now" Elaine carried on, leading him into the kitchen once more, "I have an extensive selection of biscuits, as long as you like digestives or Hob nobs!"

James noticed the space between them narrowing, the little pulse visible on the side of her neck, her breathing quicken and her pupils dilate.

"Fuck, she likes me!" he thought and leant in towards her.

Just then the floor door slammed and a male voice shouted aggressively from the hall.

"Who's the owner of the heap of shit parked outside?" the owner barked.

"And who the fuck is he?" it went on, pointing to James, as Elaine's ex staggered into the kitchen.

"What are you doing here, Rob. This isn't your house anymore and we're not together!" Elaine screamed back.

"Now get out!"

James had pushed his cup away, along the work top and appeared relaxed but ready, just waiting for Rob to over step the mark and he could take him down.

The biggest mistake Rob made was grabbing Elaine's wrist, because by the time he realized what had happened, he was on the floor in an arm lock, begging to be released.

"You call the police" James instructed Elaine, "he's not going anywhere"

To give the Police their due, they were fast, efficient and sensitive in their duties, carting an obviously d*unk Rob, back to the station, after taking statements from Elaine. James and the neighbour who, whilst cutting his grass, had witnessed Rob storming into the house.

Finally alone, Elaine began to sob uncontrollably, James pulling her head onto his chest, her tears darkening his T shirt, arms wrapped around him.

"I'm so sorry" she blubbed, "I did't want to drag you into my shit"

James tried to soothe her by running his fingers through her hair, which seemed to help.

What helped more though, was when he lifted her chin up with his hand, looked into her eyes and placed his lips on hers for their first kiss.
