My name is Maddy I am 23 years old and I recently graduated college. No, I am not stupid. I took a gap year after secondary school and my birthday is early in the year. I was always athletic and being able to run and swim year round was important to me.

I graduated with a degree in marketing assuming I could get a job with a big company. I had visions of working with celebrities on TV advertising campaigns and having huge budgets to build brand awareness. But it turned out, that was just what schools showed you in the brochure. Reality was much different.

After graduation, my parents recommended I move back home until I found my dream job, but I preferred to stay in the Dublin area so I moved in with a couple of friends from school and took a job at Starbucks, to make my end of the rent and pay my expenses. It wasn't great, but I was on my own and that was important to me.

For the next several months I kept applying for jobs and interviewing as much as I could. Slowly I widened my list of what companies and jobs would be acceptable. But there wasn't much out there. Marketing gave way to customer service then I even interviewed for a phone support position. I figured getting a foot in the door, even if the job was short term, was better than making coffee. But I kept striking out. I thought I did well in interviews. I dressed professionally for them, spoke with confidence and made sure to speak positively. I had a few call backs but somehow always ended up as the second or third choice.

Then a new opportunity popped up on my usual online job search engine. At first I almost ignored it because the location was in a bit of a commute but it was an honest to gosh marketing job so after reading the description, I started to research the company.

Corporation seeks dynamic, hard working individual to lead our marketing and market research efforts. Competitive salary, full benefits and amazing office location. Send resume to the head of HR.

The company's website was very light on details beyond that it was a woman founded and run company (the CEO was named Danny and the listing indicated that the head of HR was also a woman) and that it had been in business for 15 years. It did mention it was a small company, but they preferred it that way because it allowed them to focus on their customer needs. There were some pictures of a very modern, Southwest adobe style building that looked like it was outside of town in the mountains.

So in Winter, I would have to deal with ice and snow if we got any, but if I could somehow talk myself into getting hired, it sounded like I would be in charge of all their marketing. I know, that makes it sound like a long shot that I would get the job, but what the heck. It didn't cost me anything to apply and if I got the interview. So I sent my resume. I was up front that I was newly graduated, but I also made up some skills I claimed were from previous jobs instead of just the classroom. I wasn't surprised that I didn't get a response, at least not initially. But three weeks later I did. She had some questions for me and after a few emails, she invited me up for an interview. I tried not to assume they had interviewed many other people and were desperate enough to interview me. I dutifully took the day off from work and headed North. I had not had a live interview for a while, so I figured it was good practice if nothing else.

So promptly at 1pm on the next Wednesday, right on time, I walked into the office and asked for Danny as I had been instructed. I was wearing my best interview clothing, definitely professional. It seemed weird to me that I would meet first with the CEO and even more weird that I was told to ask for her using her first name. The receptionist (Lillie based on her nameplate), dressed perhaps more formally than I was, wasn't shocked that I used Danny's first name and said I was expected. She then called Danny who said to give her about five minutes and then to send me in. I sat down in the lobby and tried to gauge Lillie's reaction to see if she gave any information away about how many people had interviewed for the job or for information about the company in general.

I discretely stole glances at my watch and at exactly 5 minutes, Lillie told me I could go in. She said to walk past the row of cubicles and that Danny's office was the last one on the left. Nervously I went in. The center of the office had eight cubicles, not huge, but not small either. The outer walls had several rooms. Once was obviously a large conference room with a glass wall. There was another office labeled HR, Canny's office no doubt and one labeled, Marketing. I had not considered the position might come with a private office. That was definitely a luxury these days. There were two doors labeled, Relaxation on the other side of the cubes. That was weird but intriguing. Finally I saw what looked like a break room and two bathrooms. There was a men's bathroom, although I had not seen any men in the office. All the cubicle dwellers were women. They all looked busy like they were working hard and didn't seem to notice I was walking down the aisle. When I got to Danny's door, it was already open. I knocked softly and she looked up from her screen and smiled at me. She then stood up.

How to describe Danny? She was beyond impressive. I'm 5'8" and was wearing two inch heels, but she towered over me when she walked around her desk to shake my hand. She must have been over six feet tall before the three inch heels she was wearing. She was also wearing an obviously custom tailored suit that fit her like a glove. Her hair was up and in a tight bun. She looked no nonsense and strictly business. As I said, I had on my best interview attire, but I felt slovenly compared to her. But if that bothered her, she hid her reaction well.

Her imposing stature and how she carried herself made me more nervous that I had been in any interview I could remember. I stumbled over my words and my usual speech about how I could help the company and was a hard worker fell flat. We had not even gotten to the point where Danny explained what the job was all about and I was expecting her to end the interview. Instead she asked why I was so nervous. I didn't really want to explain that I was intimidated by her so I tried to make up a bogus excuse about the long drive and being stressed out by the mountain roads. She slowly nodded, but I don't think she bought my reasoning. Instead she picked up her phone and hit a quick dial button. Of course I could only hear her side of the conversation.

"Hi Lillie," Danny began. "Could you make us two cups of relaxing tea? Thanks. You're a dear."

Then she addressed me. "Maddy, I want you to relax. We're pretty low key here. Lillie is going to make us a couple of glasses of this wonderful tea. I usually have a cup around this time of the afternoon anyway to wipe out the stresses of the morning. Then we can get back to the interview. Deal?"

I didn't think I had much of a choice. I wasn't really a tea drinker, but I knew I was blowing the interview so I figured I could drink a cup to show I was a team player if nothing else. Danny took the time to describe the company in detail. I wish I had d*unk the relaxing tea first because I was kind of shocked.

"We primarily design and manufacture high end pleasure devices for women," she began. "Actually we outsource the manufacturing, but the design is in house as well as the support. And we are in need of someone to handle the marketing, primarily through Social Media although we also do selected trade shows and some product placement in adult videos."

Well that wasn't what I was expecting. The office looked so normal. I didn't have it pegged as a vibrator store. Don't make that comment. Don't make that comment, I kept repeating in my head. Fortunately Lillie appeared with a tray and two cups before I could accidentally blurt something inappropriate. I took one and she gave the other to Danny. I quickly took a sip, fully intending to fake like I enjoyed it, but surprisingly, it tasted good. Maybe I just never had the right tea before. Immediately that put me at ease and I quickly finished the cup while Danny began telling me more about the company. Then a funny thing happened. I really started to relax. Almost to the point where I couldn't concentrate. I think she noticed a glassy eyed look on my face.

"Oh, sorry about that. I should have warned you to drink it slower. I forget because I drink it almost every day so it doesn't affect me quite the same. Don't worry. The buzz will wear off soon, but the relaxation will remain for a couple of hours." That didn't make sense to me, but I was definitely buzzed so I wasn't about to worry. I thought, "this was better than wine."

Danny continued with the interview and I'm sure I was a bit too truthful in my answers since my guard was down. I vaguely remember admitting I wasn't sure if I was qualified and I wasn't sure I wanted to move out here. She told me it was a great place to live, but I could work semi-remotely for a while until I could get out of my lease. I'd have to be in the office Tuesday - Thursday and they could find somewhere for me to bunk during the week. "I'm sure one of the girls would enjoy having you stay with them a couple nights a week," broke through my brain fog.

As Danny was wrapping up the interview, I did have enough clarity to ask if I was the last person she was interviewing and why it took so long to get the invitation. She was honest and said they had interviewed some people they assumed were more qualified than me, but they didn't work out. She also said she had one more interview tomorrow. I was pretty sure that meant I was out, but she assured me that wasn't the case. She also said part of their process was a computerized IQ/personalty test and that she would like me to take that before I left. I asked what that entailed and she said it was a computer test using a variant of the dichotomies to see how I work with others to see if I would fit in. She said they also mix in IQ related questions, logic questions to see how I process problems and a few other things they have found relate to success in their environment.

I told her I wasn't against it, provided I still had a legitimate chance at the job. She said it would take an hour, although there were more questions than I could probably finish. I was still relaxed, but my fog was starting to lift so I agreed. She picked up her phone and called someone to tell her she was sending me over.

Danny stood and shook my hand as the interview ended and told me to go to the office was across the hall. I walked over still unsure of if I had a chance at the job or not, but since I was already here I figured another hour wouldn't hurt. She welcomed me to her office. She was younger than Danny and not nearly as tall. Still she was dressed impeccably and looked every inch the professional woman. She had a large desk, covered in papers as if she had many projects going on simultaneously. She led me to a small desk in the corner, apparently used for the testing. There was a laptop and what looked like a pair of Meta Quest goggles hanging on the wall. Yes, I am enough of a geek to know what Meta Quest goggles look like.

Cara had me sit down. She explained there were no wrong answers, per say, (she winked as she said it) but this was just to evaluate how best to interact with me and whether I would fit in with the other employees. She told me the goggles were a prototype of a new product they are developing so I would wear them instead of looking at the laptop. She also added they were having some challenges with the PC interface so there might be some glitches. I would use the mouse to answer multiple choice questions and there would be random sounds through the built-in headphones to distract me. I had one hour to answer as many questions as possible. I was always a good test taker and my competitive nature made me want to answer more questions than the other applicants. I didn't know if that was a factor in their decision, but again, doing better couldn't hurt.

Cara asked if I was ready to begin? I answered, "Yes."

She hit a couple of keys on the laptop and a countdown timer from 20 appeared. She then plugged in the goggles and handed them to me with a smile and said, "Good luck. You'll do fine."

I quickly put on the goggles. They were very immersive, even if it was just a laptop screen with huge numbers counting down. The only sound was a soft beep as each number changed. I was still feeling the relaxing effects of the tea and I didn't feel any stress starting a test that might determine whether I got hired. The first question appeared.

As a teacher, you prefer teaching fact-based subjects (like history) over theoretical subjects (like physics).

There were five circles rating from Strongly Agree to Strongly Disagree. I wasn't a teacher, but I did prefer facts to theory and since I had applied for a marketing oriented job that was sort of teaching people about a product, I clicked the second, Somewhat Agree button.

While that was a pretty easy question, some were more probing.

When interacting with others, you are more emotional than rational.

That required more introspection and I started to realize why most people wouldn't finish the entire test. I also noticed some questions called back to previous questions, just worded slightly differently.

Others generally perceive you as emotional rather than rational.

Mixed in were questions rather than statements that I had to solve. Those were obviously the IQ questions. Some were easy and some were more of a challenge.

If it takes 5 machines 5 minutes to make 5 widgets, how long would it take 100 machines to make 100 widgets?

In a lake, there is a patch of lily pads. The patch doubles in size every day. If it takes 48 days for the patch to cover the entire lake, how long would it take for the patch to cover half of the lake?

I really had to slow down and read the questions carefully to make sure I didn't make a dumb mistake. At some point, the screen in the goggles started flashing occasionally. Sometimes it was the entire screen, sometimes it was just a bright white spot and sometimes it became static. The background sounds seemed to mimic these distractions. I remembered Cara told me they were a prototype and tried to focus on the test. But as it began to happen with more frequency, I felt my mind wandering. At one point, I thought I heard a voice in the background of the sounds, but that made no sense.

I really don't remember much of the second half of the test, but when I felt Cara take the goggles off of my head, she indicated I had done well. That made me happy and I smiled. But I felt pretty wiped out and asked if I could wait a few minutes in the lobby before driving home.

"Nonesense, my dear," Caroa said. "We have relaxation pods for the employees. A rested employee is a productive employee."

She then looked at her watch.

"It's 3:45. I'll be here until at least until 5. Take a quick power nap in one of the pods. I'll wake you before I leave. You'll be refreshed, safe to drive and home by 7:30ish. Does that sound good?"

It actually did sound good. Maybe a little weird to take a snooze after an interview, but then this whole experience was kind of weird. Cara esc*rted me to a room I had noticed when I was walking to Danny's office marked "Relaxation." There were actually two of these rooms, but one had a Do Not Disturb placard on the knob. Cara opened the other room and ushered me inside. It wasn't a large room and it was dominated by a large, cushy looking massage chair. I'd seen before, but never tried one. Caroa told me to take off my shoes and sit down.

Excitedly I did exactly that. It was snug, but not uncomfortable. My arms went between two panels that had little rubber nubs. They felt a bit tight, but I could get my arms back out with a bit of effort. In case you're wondering, I did test that theory. Similarly my calves went between two other panels and my feet went into a foot well that held my legs tightly similarly to my arms. I'd watched people in the demo chairs at and they seemed to be enjoying the experience so I didn't freak out, but I was getting a bit nervous. Cara pushed a button on the control panel and the chair rotated backwards so I was basically laying down.

"This is the zero gravity position," Cara told me. "You shouldn't feel any particular pressure points. I'm going to set the massage function to light. The chair can be quite rigorous, but I want you to try to nap so that wouldn't be appropriate. Enjoy."

Looking up I noticed a large TV suspended above the chair. I also noticed what I assumed were acoustic panels on the wall to further isolate the room from the office. There was a video of a mountain stream and the low sound of softly running water began to play from speakers integrated into the headrest. Then I felt the chair begin to pulse. The lights also dimmed and I noticed the video was pretty dark. I realized it wouldn't disturb me if I did fall asleep. I remember thinking I hope the sound of the stream doesn't make me pee. Cara handed me the remote.

"The big red button on top will turn the chair off and return it back to the upright position when you're ready to quit," she instructed me. "Just lay back and enjoy it. Let all your worries wash down the stream. Just relax and unwind."

I couldn't see her leave, but I heard the door open and shut. I took a deep breath and when I exhaled I immediately felt relaxed. I'd never know a wave of relaxation to wash over me like that before. The sound of the stream was soft and I had to focus to hear it. Then some new age music mixed in with it and I felt my eyes getting heavy. The chair was gently squeezing me. First at my fingertips then up my forearms and to my shoulders. Those rubber nubs massaged my arms moving up toward my neck. I had not realized there were panels near my neck until they inflated causing a similar massage to the side of my neck. The back of the chair had a roller. It was very soft, but I could feel it run down my spine. I bet it is the part that could be forceful if you set it that way. A similar roller went down over my hips and outer thighs and then the inflatable panels took over for my calves and feet. It was wonderful.

After my feet inflated and deflated, giving me a most wonderful sensation, the wave moved back up my body.
