You do not say how or why you are taking this medication but who ever prescribed it should have explained any side effects with you, otherwise how would you know what to look out for? Also you could and should still be able to ask the pharmacist.

Anybody should question any medications uses and interactions before taking them and ask your GP or Prescriber..... Sometimes they forget.... They should not mind and may even show you the listing in their drug bible BNF!

I think im sure my posts said that my hubby was on the patches for the pain - while he waits for an operation..

if it helps - it was his doctor that precribed them for severe back and nerve damage pain.....

If he has pain caused by nerve damage it will be severe, debilitating and unimaginable to anyone who hasn't suffered it. I don't know what the side effects of this particular drug are but I was prescribed a lot of medication before an operation to relieve the nerve pain caused by back problems, all of it was addictive and had a list of side effects as long as your arm, you don't get all of them but the best person or people to decide if the good side effect of.pain relief is worth any potential bad ones is the sufferer and their doctor. Having said all that no pain relief worked for me on nerve pain, my sympathies go out to your husband I hope he gets operation soon.

I also have nerve damage in my back after I had a slipped disc, the prolapse was very large and caused the nerve to be damage, I have had this for 7 years now.

I was prescribed BuTrans patches, a very similar opioid drug, but this caused me to have a very severe headache so bad that I was taken into hospital for a week as they thought I had a brain hemorrhage! but after loads of tests I was found to be opioid tolerant, so cannot take anything like this

They are very powerful drugs and as opioids they are both addictive and a controlled drug...but if you're enough pain anything that will help take!

" Having said all that no pain relief worked for me on nerve pain."

My pain management doctor told me that nerve pain can only be controlled so far, without it affecting your life too much. He told me he couldn't get rid of the pain only reduce it, if I wanted no pain then I would basically need to be asleep most of the day with morphine!

When he prescribes drug to me he starts low and raises the dose over time and once I start to feel the side effects he pull back on the dose. Of the ones I have tried, most do nothing, some help a little, but I just live with it, as it is inoperable there's little else I can do

"Just wondering if anyone else get this prescribed to them for pain relief and Does it help your pain or affect your sex-drive in any way ?? .. "

I was prescribed these patches for a short time as we felt it may be a suitable method if pain management. However, the first time I used was at work, so after driving to work I applied the patch to my upper arm and I have no recollection of the next 4-6 hours, I was completely off my face and fortunate that I was office based. I had told my boss about my medication so they were able to react and help to a safe area where I remained for most if the day till the effects wore off and I was fit enough to drive home.

The next day I contacted my specialist and we decided to stop them over the next few days which was a bank hol weekend by cutting the patches down in size. I couldn't be on my own with them on and I def couldn't work.

When I was prescribed them you had to sign the dangerous drugs register and you even must return the worn patches.

Since then I've been fitted with a spinal implant for pain management, it's a very expensive procedure and is in for life but through a remote you can very easily control your pain.

To be honest my sex drive was the last thing on my mind, simply because pain itself is an extremely debilitating condition which affects every aspect of your life!

I don't know where you are being treated but there is a procedure which may help manage the pain and give 70-80% relief possibly a little more and it's for nerve damage.

I also could not tolerate opiate based drugs, I would use tramadol like others use paracetamol but i be on an off them as they began to have less effect. There are not that many centres that perform the procedure so if you want to know more you can message me.

For all the reason recently stated, Fentanyl should only be given to terminal patients.

Thank you for all the comments, it really is interesting to know just how strong these patches are.. !!!

And i can really sympathise with some of the severe back pain comments..

Hubby has also probably had every painkiller going and has to live with constant pain 24/7..

and its not nice to see a loved one in constant pain and not being able to do anything to help...

Thanks again.. but it now seems that even the patches are not really helping my hubby with his pain..

Fentanyl is a synthetic opiod... Very strong, and as someone else who has bone pain I can confirm it is hugely effective but has to be titrated properly to avoid the side effects... And even then susceptible folks get them.

It plays a necessary role in pain management but non of the opioids should be taken lightly, they all create dependency with prolonged use, induce tolerance in users and most people experience at least some side effects even with low doses of drugs like codeine.

It's whether there are any alternatives - nerve pain is notoriously difficult to treat even with drugs like lyrica, amitriptilline and gabapentin. Anti inflammatories dont help much I might as well just chuck mine straight down the loo some days, feels like.

It may well be a case of managing as best possible until the operation comes and then weaning off them.

Good luck to hubby xx

As I said early there is another option, it requires some counselling before you get the ok and after trying all the available drugs its the best option there is as far as I'm concerned.

OP - Your hubby must be in some considerable pain. Fentanyl is many, many times stronger than Morphine and, because of that, is likely to have dulling effects on many aspects of normality. But, once he's had his surgery, soon after he won't need it and his libido will return... Have to give it time...

"This drug is killing many people in america, its used to tranqulize elephants"

Two deadly drugs behind an epidemic of fatalities in the US are now spreading onto British streets, the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) has warned.

Police believe a spate of deaths in the north of England has been caused by heroin laced with fentanyl, an opioid 100 times stronger than street heroin, and its chemical cousin carfentanil, which is 100 times stronger again and used by vets to tranquilise elephants
