Fake profiles, what's the game?

Interacted with someone on here who was happy to go to a WA group so all 3 could communicate. But then went quiet. Now looking back I suspect it was a fake profile.. profile and sent pics didn't align as well on close inspection and curious WA name came through.
So, what is their game and what are they hoping to achieve? |

"I was just wondering if people get up to nefarious things with pictures and numbers they manage to solicit. I don't see any reports of such in the fora, but..."
For safety and to keep things totally separate, I've a separate PAYG phone for Fab and only recently setup WA on it (after I was asked in these parts to talk via WA).
A day or so later I got a PayPal verification code sent to the number.
No one else unknown had the number and PayPal is not connected with it in any way.
PayPal said (the conversation was limited due to GDPR) that an attempt at a new account was made, using the number I have.
Seems very coincidental, particularly as I never got to have a WA convo with the person in question.
Take care would be my takeaway. |

I BLOCK every profile containing silhouettes, no or merely 1 or 2 pics, no veris or none displayed etc |
